Task 2: Clean a food preparation area This task is about cleaning surfaces used for food preparation in a commercial, residential or health care facility.

Your observer will complete the following observation form and may ask questions about what you are doing or what you have done previously and the equipment and cleaning products used. The observer may have recently seen you do one or more of these tasks. If so, they can record on the form evidence previously seen, heard, documented or filed.

What you need to do

Clean food preparation surfaces while your observer or assessor observes you.

To achieve this task, you need to:

wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep yourself safe.

clean and sanitise surfaces that may be used for food preparation.

remove rubbish.

follow your organisation’s requirements for cleaning.

follow your customer’s requirements for cleaning.

use equipment and cleaning agents according to manufacturer’s recommendations.

complete cleaning tasks within the timeframe expected by your organisation.

Before you begin cleaning, put on the right personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep yourself safe.

For example, your PPE might be gloves, closed-in shoes and your uniform.

Clean and sanitise any surfaces where people might prepare food.

For example, you might need to clean the bench top, table tops and chopping boards.

Use cleaning products according to manufacturer’s directions and workplace requirements.

Check to see if the rubbish bin is full and if it needs to be emptied, do so.

Separate and dispose of the rubbish correctly.

Task 3: Clean a general area This task is about cleaning floors in a general area, such as an office. The general area may be in a commercial, residential or health care facility. If your general area does not contain carpet, you may do the task in a carpeted area which is not part of your regular cleaning schedule.

Your observer will complete the following observation form and may ask questions about how you cleaned the floors or what you have done previously and the equipment and cleaning products used. The observer may have recently seen you do one or more of these tasks. If so, they can record on the form evidence previously seen, heard, documented or filed.

What you need to do

Clean a general area such as an office while your observer or assessor observes you.

To complete this task, you need to:

check the cleaning equipment before you use it.

use suitable cleaning products safely.

use a vacuum cleaner to clean hard floors and carpet.

use a bucket and mop or microfiber mop to clean hard floors.


complete all tasks in accordance with your organisation’s procedures.



Observation




Check that all electrical equipment is safe to use before you begin your work.

Before you use your vacuum cleaner, make sure:

it has a current electrical certificate.

the cord is in good condition.

connections are secure and in good condition.

Check that your cleaning equipment is well-maintained before you begin your work.

Example: your bucket and cloths are clean and your mop or microfiber mop is not worn out.

Mop the hard floors using the correct equipment and technique, leaving it clean and streak-free. Do not damage the furniture or skirting boards.

Example: vacuum to get the dust and dirt off the floor, then use a bucket and mop. Use the figure eight or overlapping mopping technique.


Change the water regularly.

Empty the dirty water from the bucket in an appropriate place when you finish mopping the floors.

When you have finished with the cloths, bucket and mop, clean them and put them away to dry.

Vacuum the carpet using the correct equipment and technique, without damaging furniture and skirting boards. Empty the vacuum bag (if required) when you finish vacuuming.

For example, use a vacuum cleaner with the correct attachment for the carpet.

Put away equipment in the cleaning cupboard tidily, so all items can be accessed easily.

Task 4: Clean a toilet area This task is about cleaning a toilet area in a commercial, residential or health care facility.

Your observer will complete the following observation form and may ask questions about how you clean a toilet area or what you have done previously and the equipment and cleaning products used. The observer may have recently seen you do one or more of these tasks. If so, they can record on the form evidence previously seen, heard, documented or filed.

What you need to do

Clean at least six parts of a toilet facility while your observer or assessor observes you.

To complete this task, you need to:

spot clean hard surfaces.

clean metal surfaces.

clean glass surfaces.

clean at least six parts of a toilet area.

clean up spills.

mop floors.

check and refill supplies, such as toilet rolls and soap.

maintain equipment, put it away and leave cleaning cupboard tidy.


complete all tasks in accordance with organisation’s procedures.

Spot clean as required. Make sure you don’t damage any surfaces.

Example: the wall between a basin and mirror often gets marked by water and soap when people wash their hands.

Clean the metal surfaces in a toilet area to remove dirt and streaks.

Clean the glass surfaces in a toilet area to remove dirt and streaks.


Check and top up or replace any items in the toilet area.

Example: make sure all toilets have toilet rolls, hand soap is topped up and paper towels are topped up.

As a cleaner, you need to clean up spills. Your assessor needs to observe you cleaning up two spills. Make sure you use the correct equipment.

Examples of spills are water, cleaning products, urine, rubbish.
