Purpose of role
To assist the archivists with the day-to-day running of the archive
service. The role covers a wide range of duties including
answering enquiries from staff and members of the public,
undertaking cataloguing projects and assisting with outreach
activities. This is an ideal post for someone looking to gain
practical experience before applying to study for a professional
qualification in archives and records management. It would also
be suitable for someone currently studying for a postgraduate
archive qualification by distance learning. The trainee will be
offered the opportunity to attend relevant courses and visit other
archives in the London area.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities
Answering enquiries relating to the archive collections
Scanning photographs and negatives
Accessioning new material coming into the archive
Repackaging and labelling archive material
Undertaking cataloguing projects under the guidance of the archivists
Uploading records to our digital repository
Working on our audio-visual digitisation project
Monitoring and recording environmental conditions in the archive stores
Retrieval and return of archive material including lifting and carrying
Assisting and supervising researchers
Assisting with outreach activities, including contributing to the archives website and
twitter feed
General office management (photocopying, filing etc)
Key contacts and relationships (internal and external)
GNM Archive team
GNM Staff at all levels of the organisation
Readers and members of the general public
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Knowledge& experience
Intending to apply to study on one of the archive courses
or currently studying on distance learning course
Good knowledge of modern history and current affairs
Undergraduate degree in any subject
Experience of working in an archive service(paid or voluntary)
