The story:

The inhabitants of a little village learn the horror of the Nazi in a nearby village. It’s Shlomo, the lunatic of the village, who inform them.Shlomo has an idea to survive: he suggests building a train and giving to every villagers a precise task…….

…Someone plays the Nazi, another is a deportee or the driver of a train, and one is a German general……...

On board of this train, the villagers try to cross Ukraine and Russia to get to their land: The Palestine

The train represents the salvation, the sadness between life and freedom; an effort to reach a new home

In this movie the topic of the Shoah is faced in a bitterly ironic manner making the movie unique and definitely appreciated from the criticism.

The movie received several awards, including: 1998 – Venice film festival, Anicaflash and Fipresci’s award to Radu Mihailenau1999 – The David of Donatello award for best foreign movie to Radu Mihaleanu1999 – Sundance film festival – best movie to Radu Mihaileanu.
