Changes to Trailblazers Square Dance Schedule in the TRAILBLAZER. In the recent past the Trailblazers Square Dance schedule presentation for the TRAILBLAZER was condensed to 1 page. Additionally with that revision, plans were made to allow continual monthly updates to the callers list. If you haven’t recently looked at that last TRAILBLAZER page (or pages) that just seemed to be along for the monthly ride, take a peek. The caller schedule calendar is now “rolling.” As an entry is removed from the top, another month is added at the bottom — making the schedule extend into at least a 10-month period. Thanks Jack Friend for the suggestion.

Sandie Bryant — Trailblazers April 2014 Caller

Sandie was born, raised and still lives on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, with her husband Albert and daughter Alexandra Jeannae. She first started square dancing when she was 8 years old as a Girl Scout with her best friend Alicia. The leader of the troop happened to be Alicia's mother, Swersie Dumetz Norris, who called for square dance clubs in Chicago's African-American community. Swersie also taught square dancing to youth groups and coached boy's basketball and baseball. In fact, that's how Swersie found dance partners for the girls; she would make the boys dance with them before they could play ball! After going to college, Sandie returned to square dancing in September 1976. By this time, CALLERLAB had established dance levels and calling lists. She went back to a Beginners class Swersie was teaching, but didn't believe she'd remember any of her past training. To everyone's surprise, she wound up directing traffic in the square. So Swersie gave her the entire Mainstream and Plus lists to study and told Sandie to come to Swersie's next Plus level club dance. By October 1977, Swersie thought Sandie had lost her mind. Sandie had gone from non-dancer to C3 in one year! In 1979 Swersie provided calling tutelage as well as a Plus group for Sandie's first calling endeavors. Every so often, a little piece of Swersie’s vocabulary will fall out of Sandie's mouth, especially when she says, "You got to know your definitions!" To this day Sandie continues to call Mainstream through C4 weekly square dances and special square dance events for local Chicago Square Dance clubs. By the summer of 1980, Sandie called her first National Convention in Memphis, Tennessee and proceeded to establish herself as one of the premiere callers in the country. To further her calling knowledge, in 1981 she attended her first CALLERLAB convention in Kansas City, Missouri. There she became familiar with finer points of Square Dance calling and she also developed close friendships with many of her peers. Her pursuit of calling did not diminish her desire to square dance. She joined Bill Heimann's Challenge tape workshop group and to this day still sets aside one night a week to dance with that group allowing her to continually improve her dancing ability by dancing to other callers as well as occasionally dancing to herself which she considers one of her greatest challenges. Uniquely Sandie - SHE is the one with the low voice. One of 12 or 14 African-American Square Dance callers in the whole world - this group has declined in number from a high of around 30. Sandie's accomplishments are on-going. She is on the calling staff for AACE (Academy for Advanced and Challenge Enthusiasts) and various national and international festivals. Sandie is a CALLERLAB and Gay Callers Association (GCA) member and has called at numerous conventions, festivals and square dance events in many U.S. states as well as Austria, Canada, China, England, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and Sweden. In 2012, the IAGSDC's Golden Boot was presented to Sandie. The Golden Boot is presented each year to a person or group that has made significant and sustained contributions to the LGBTQ Square Dance community. Sandie has also appeared on television shows promoting square dancing - the non-inclusive list includes the Phil Donahue Show and Common Ground hosted by Warner Saunders (WBBM-TV Channel 2 Chicago) and she has written numerous articles about Square Dance calling.

Caller John Marshall sends his greetings and best to all of his Trailblazers friends. While attending ACDC (East Coast Advanced & Challenge) Rod & Hal had the pleasure of dancing with John. He is doing remarkably well and hopes to be able to return Los Angeles soon.

Trailblazer Mike Seastrom was Magic Squares caller on March 22, 2014. He was joined in San Diego by other Los Angeles and Orange County Trailblazers members and friends. Those crossing the “Pendleton Barrier” included: Bruce Crabtree, Barbara Jones, Mimmie Lee, John & Barbara Marshall, John & Peggy Martin, John Melstrom and Sandy Michelsen and were joined by Trailblazers and friends from San Diego: Rod Anderson, Hal Anker, David Dooley, Carol Heins, Rich & Val Layton, John & Stacy Reddan and Jerry Shaffer. Thanks Mike for providing us with this unique opportunity to have a most enjoyable and

beneficial Square Dance afternoon and evening.

The article that follows about a possible Square Dance documentary was passed to the Editor and it appears that it might be interesting to some of the TRAILBLAZER readers. Therefore, it is being presented here. A POSSIBLE Square Dance Documentary Squares is hopefully going to a documentary film and will be about people who love to square dance. Filmmaker is Shareen Anderson, of Brooklyn, NY. A portion of Squares will feature Varene Anderson, the filmmaker’s grandmother, who started the first National Square Dance Convention in Riverside, California in 1952 with her husband Carl Anderson and two other couples. The filmmaker will be exploring the fascinating Square Dance world.

Then after reading about Kickstarter, if your interest is still peeked, watch the project video — it’s entirely at your discretion. “Glimpses Back Along The Trail ” is being introduced as a new addition for the TRAILBLAZER reader. It will start with this issue and is a work-in-progress to hopefully be completed by May 2016. It will eventually become the condensed online Trailblazers chronicle. Every effort will be made to ensure information when published is as

accurate as possible. Yet revisions and corrections certainly must be part of this process and will be more than welcomed. You are definitively encouraged to add your input to this project. OR better yet contribute an article. Wikipedia is a term or website commonly used and understood. Look at this as the WikiTrail or WikiBlazer – no final decision, at this time, has been made about its ultimate website destination name. But it will be fun, enjoyable and enlightening to go back along the Trail ! A more comprehensive introductory preamble for Glimpses Back Along The Trail needs to be written with proper credit given to those who have so unselfishly contributed — knowingly or unknowingly. The preamble will be forthcoming. Admittedly, if time was taken to get all the duckies in a row and have every eye properly dotted and every tee properly crossed, the digital electronic press probably would never make it through cyberspace. Subsequent, but not necessarily successive, installments will appear in future issues. So here goes – you as Trailblazers and Trailblazers friends are invited to come along and enjoy our stroll back along the Trail.
