Introducing new board member, Tom Mace Full name: Thomas Mallory Mace (Tom) My family has lived in the Winchester area since 1994. We lived on Prospect Hill in Winchester Country from 1994 to 2004. We moved to Winchester Country Trails in May 2004. My wife's name is Eileen. We have two (2) daughters: Erin (age 26) and Emily (21). Both daugh-ters attended Bang Elementary, Cook Middle School, and Jersey Village High School. We are long-time members of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church. Eileen has been the Direc-tor of Kolbe Kids (pre-school) since 2007. I retired in November 2015 from a long career in the Oil & Gas Industry as an Accounting & Risk Manager. I am now an active Adult Education vol-unteer, teaching and tutoring ESL (English as a Second Language. Our family has enjoyed living in this area. We have many friends who moved to Houston from many other states and countries. I can't think of any other place in the USA that affords so many opportunities (jobs, education, diversity). Letter from Ron Matthews To: Trails Residents Re: A Goodbye I wanted to tell everyone that Tom Mace will be replacing me on the Board. I especially want to say "thank you" to all the committee members that are hard at work out there. The Board and committee volunteers are the very reason you have an excellent community to live in. I was excited to see almost thirty residents at each of the last two meetings. Please continue your support of the volunteers and get involved yourself. Anyone who lives in the Trails can run for an opening on the Board which is a 3 year term. If we all pitch in a little, everyone wins a lot. My Best to all Trails residents.

Green Thumb Corner

At the time of writing we’ve had a couple of tantalizing hints of cool weather after rain storms but we’re still waiting for a genuine cool front to provide some relief and encourage us to get out and spend time working in the yard and garden. It may feel like winter is still a long way off, but it’s already time to start thinking about bulbs if you want to have a nice show of color in the spring. They’ve been in some stores for a while already, and newspaper articles and radio talk shows have been covering the annual topic. Even if you’re not ready to plant yet, now is the time to buy while the selection is still good; bulbs may be safely stored in the refrigerator, just like a regular vegetable, and can be planted this month or next, or you can even procrastinate until Christ-mas. Remember that tulips are an exception and should not be planted before late December, but get them in the refrigerator as soon as possible for at least three weeks of chilling prior to planting. In addition to the usual daf-fodils and tulips, try Amaryllis, Anemone, Calla, Iris, Lilies, Narcissus, Oxalis and Ranunculus, and select a va-riety of early, mid and latebloomers to stretch out the flowering period. Plant in rich, loamy soil with lots of hu-mus, and it helps to add bone meal at the bottom of the hole; planting depth is usually indicated on the packet, but a good rule of thumb is to use a depth of two or three times the width of the bulb.

October is the recommended month for giving the lawn its final feeding of the year to promote root health through the winter, and it may also be needed to encourage some regrowth in areas damaged by hot and dry pe-riods earlier in the year. Use 15-5-10 or 16-8-8 or even a general-purpose 12-24-12 or 13-13-13. Watch out for Brown Patch, recognizable as circular brown or yellow areas of grass that expands outwards; this is a fungus activated by cooler moist weather and is easily spread by people and pets walking across affected areas. Control with Terraclor granules or any general purpose turf fungicide. This summer, just like last year, our area has been hit by a plague of sod webworms due to wet conditions followed by high temperatures. The tell-tale sign is when you see swarms of small moths flying up from ground level as you walk across the grass or run the mow-er. It may require a few repeated treatments of liquid or granular pesticide to eradicate the pest.

November is the usual time for setting out pansy plants in beds or containers after the weather has cooled, and they really can’t be beaten for providing a show of color through the winter months. They will benefit from a little blood meal under each plant, but otherwise pansies require very little care and attention. Dig up and store caladium bulbs this month or next it to locate them before the foliage dies back completely, and if left in the ground they may rot or freeze. Dry them—it’s easier in the shade, brush off any loose soil, dust with fungicide, and hang up in old pantyhose in the garage.

As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stems close to the ground to allow all the energy to be used for root growth. They can be divided and transplanted any time from now until March, but the sooner the earlyblooming varieties are moved, the earlier and better will be their blooms. Roses should be watered well and may be fed lightly; groom out any dead wood, but do not prune heavily until January or Febru-ary.

Acidloving azaleas like a pH of 5.0 or less, so check your soil and treat with powdered sulfur or copperas. Sprin-kle around the base of the shrub, and watering thoroughly. Groom as necessary and buddingout should occur where cut. Mulch well and keep moist.

In the vegetable garden, plant strawberries between midOctober and midNovember in raised beds with good drainage, using slightlyacid, rich, loose soil with lots of humus (bark mulch is good). Cabbage and collard plants can go in, and you can sow seeds for beets, turnips, carrots, lettuce, spinach, radishes and onions. Also try plant-ing English garden peas this month or next for an early spring crop, but you may have to nurse them through any freezing spells. Any unused beds should be turned over, spread with manure or compost, and allowed to weather for a while.

New website for Winchester Trails — Townsquare

Winchester Trails now has a new website! The Winchester Country Trails Maintenance Association has part-nered with PCMI to bring a subdivision website solution to the Trails. The new website is named Townsquare, and it is developed by Nabr Network. Townsquare is designed with features required for an official subdivision website. Listed below are just some of the features for residents:

• Receive important Winchester Trails news • Post neighborhood news, alerts, etc. • Start a community group of your own (study groups, mother’s group, etc) • View the resident address directory, view sub-groups (i.e. Board, Committees, etc.) • Privately view status of your HOA account • View community calendar • Report a lost or found pet • Post items for sale or giveaway in the specific Classified section

Register online using the instructions below.

Your Board wants to do everything it can to make this a positive experience and valuable tool for our subdivi-sion. With emphasis on communications, please help us achieve that goal. We are working hard towards a two-way street, where everyone gets an opportunity to discuss and promote ideas. Come be a part of that and make our neighborhood a wonderful place to live. Winchester Trails Board of Directors Registering for the Townsquare website 1. Visit https://winchestercountrytrails.nabrnetwork.com. 2. In the top right of the page, above the Severn Trent logo, click Login. 3. In the TownSquare dialog that appears, click Need to register? 4. Follow the prompts. You can provide either your HOA account number or your first and last name as it appears in the HOA docu-ments/deed. After the system verifies that you reside in Winchester Trails, you receive an email with login cre-dentials. If you need any assistance registering, you can visit https://townsquare.nabrnetwork.com/connect_support.php. For other questions or help, you may contact [email protected] or any other board member for assistance.
