The trucks are rolling in, the tables are set and everything is ready to go for the annual Silver City Days celebration in Trail, according to the organizing committee.

Committee president, Ian McLeod, is hoping for a good turnout for the 50-year anniversary of the community celebration.

“We always have a good crowd,” he said. “We hope for the 50th it'll be even better.”

With the old Eagles building lot available this year McLeod is hoping there might even be additional rides offered at the midway.

“We've got some new vendors for the street mall and we'll have a bit more room for the mid-way this year,” McLeod said. “There will also be a free concert on Sunday for Family Day at Gyro Park with Abracadabra, an ABBA cover band.”

Festival goers can expect many of the attrac-tions they have come to appreciate over the years with live music on the main stage on Spokane Street from Wednesday to Saturday, a wide variety of tasty treats and novelties at the Festival Food Mall, and the Junior Smoke Eaters hosting the sidewalk cafe in the Cominco Arena Saturday.

A new library proposal might mean the start of a new story.

On Monday, Trail city council announced its decision to dedicate the land previously occu-pied by the Eagles Building for the construction of a new Trail Public Library and Historical Museum in downtown Trail.

“I am as I always have been with regards to a new library, cautiously optimistic,” said Barbara Gibson, Trail and District Library Board chair. “My only concern is that the lot is only 7,500 square feet, compared to Fields which was 10,000, so we are going to have to do some talk-ing in this initial stage.”

Mayor Bogs said that constructing a new building will offer the public a new and modern facility in a good location.

“Buying a piece of property (Fields) and then having to renovate it to today’s standards was too expensive,” he explained. “It just didn’t make any sense, and this new library museum will definitely be a two-story building.”

However, council’s decision, made during the strategic planning meeting on Thursday, is not the final say.

“The final decision on whether or not the building will be constructed will be made by the Trail citizens.”

During the next municipal election, in November 2014, the public will have the oppor-tunity to vote for a loan authorization bylaw to provide the authority required for council to borrow money needed to proceed with the detailed design and construction.

the Village of Warfield is out of the hospital following Friday's fatal truck crash.

A 50-year-old Ontario truck driv-er died Friday when his transport truck lost control at the bottom of the Rossland hill leading into Warfield.

Debris from the crash injured a village employee who was sent

to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital and released over the weekend.

The name of the deceased and the injured employee are currently being withheld.

RCMP responded to  the acci-dent at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Friday at the intersection of Tennyson Ave. and Highway 3B.

According to the police report, a Commercial B Train traveling down

Highway 3B loaded with cement blocks lost control at the intersec-tion and went off road left into an empty field.  The driver, whose name is being withheld until next of kin is notified, was deceased at

the scene.The West Kootenay Traffic

Services and the Provincial Coroner Services are investigat-ing this crash. Possible causes are mechanical failure or driver error.

of four dogs hon-oured at Monday’s ceremony including another B.C. canine, Teak, who was named the Service Dog of the Year for the German Shepherd’s work in apprehend-ing a Vancouver rob-bery suspect despite receiving knife wounds during the arrest. Teak under-went two surgeries and, with the wounds healed, is enjoying retirement.

“The tenacity of our 2013 induct-ees to rescue and protect people from harm – whether it’s a wild animal, house fire, criminal or a medical emergency – showcases the con-nection animals have to humans and the physical risks they will take to keep them safe,” said Mary Siemiesz, executive director of the Purina PetCare Legacy in a press release.

Vicious is the fourth Greater Trail animal to gain induc-tion into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame.

In 2005, Ty, an eight-year-old Siamese cat was hon-oured for saving his Trail owner’s life after she collapsed with heart failure.

In 2007, golden retriever Jango was hailed for alerting her Trail family to a house fire.

In 2009, Jarod, a chow chow, saved its owner and a fel-low pet from a bear attack.

Friday the Miss Trail 2013 Pageant will be held at the Charles Bailey Theatre, also hosting 28 returning Miss Trail Queens from past pageants.

Saturday will be a busy day for the festival with the Silver City Days Firefighter’s Parade start-ing at 11 a.m., taking its usual route through downtown and the Smokin Steel Car Club will be holding their May Days Show

FROM PAGE 1“Constructing a new building on

city-owned land will end up costing the city and taxpayers in the long run,” said Bogs.

“Of course this will impact taxes, as does every capital project,”conceded Gibson.

“But as I said in my previous proposal to council, the cost could be spread out over time.”

Gibson said that during the next 18 months, the board will use the time to partake in fundraising to mitigate the cost to the Trail tax-payer; and to build awareness of what a new the new library museum will look like.

“This gives people time for input about what they want to see in the new library, and build some excite-ment about the project.”

The next stage in the library relocation saga is that the city will hire an architectural firm to develop the necessary conceptual plan for presentation to the public.

“Our study listed what people in Trail want to see in their library,” said Gibson.

“I am looking forward to work-ing with the City of Trail and the historical society.

“Then the people of Trail get to vote on whether or not they want it.”

New building construction will cost Trail taxpayers

The CP Rail bridge over the Columbia River in Revelstoke re-opened Sunday after-noon after crews completed repairs follow-ing a fire Saturday evening.

“Work progressed safely throughout the day and after all repairs were complete and track safety inspections were performed, we were able to restore rail service to our main line in Revelstoke late this afternoon and train operations have resumed,’ wrote CP Rail spokesperson Kevin Hrysak in an e-mail Sunday.

Revelstoke firefighters, with help from provincial forest fire fighters, spent several hours putting out a fire, which started at around 7 p.m. on May 4.

The fire slowly filled the valley with thick black smoke as a northwest wind blew the fumes down the Columbia River.

There was no train on the bridge.A crowd of people made their way to the

Farwell neighbourhood and Woodenhead Park to witness the fire and watch as fire-fighters moved in to tackle the blaze.

Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services responded in force, with several trucks and 18 firefighters. CP Rail personnel and RCMP also attended.

Firefighters had their snorkel truck spraying water on the bridge. Afterwards, teams of firefighters could be seen working their way along the bridge, spraying water over the flames. A helicopter was brought in by the Ministry of Forests to water bomb the fire from the air.

The cause of the fire is under investi-gation, said Hrysak in an e-mail Sunday morning. He wrote there was damage to the rails and ties on the bridge, and there was no word yet on when the bridge -- which is part of CP Rail’s main line to and from the west coast -- would be re-opened.

“Our engineering crews were inspect-ing the bridge early this morning before any work commenced and the appropriate safety inspections will be performed once full repairs are complete and before train operations resume,” he wrote.

MASON, DELFINA — It is with sad and heavy hearts that we an-nounce the sudden passing of our dear wife, moth-er, nonna and bisnonna, Del na Mason, on April 27th, 2013.

Del na was born November 26th, 1928 in S’ Giorgio Richin-velda Pozzo, Italy to Emma and An-tonio Colonello. She was married to Angelo Mason on her birthday, November 26th, 1949 and they enjoyed 63 years of marriage together. A few months after they were married, Angelo left Italy to come to Canada. Del na made the long journey across the ocean, landing in New York City and then across Canada to Trail by her-self in October of 1950. Quite a feat, especially as she didn’t speak the language.

Del na and Angelo made their home in Fruitvale in 1952 where they had four children. ‘Nonna’ was always ready with warm, dry socks for grandchildren in the winter, good food and yummy candy bowls. She enjoyed her owers and garden, and spent many hours outdoors tending to them both. Del na’s main focus was her family and mak-ing sure everyone was well fed and well loved.

Del na was predeceased by her parents and two sisters: Angelina Colonello and Linda Altan. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, three sons: Carlo (Marilyn), Dave (Brenda), Bernie (Sherri), daugh-ter: Sylvia (Rick Dominici), grand-children: Marlo (Mike Caputo), Michele (Kevin Ihas), Mike (Janet), Jeff (Julia), Jarret (Megan), Matthew and Nathan; eight great grandchil-dren: Jesse, Josh, Emmie, Nate, Mya, Gino, Gemma and Taylor, as well as two sisters: Cathy Colonello, Nives (Reg) Bozzer, a brother Tino (Laura) Colonello, sister-in-law Ava Cominotto, and many nieces and nephews.

A family graveside service took place Thursday, May 2nd, 2013 at the Fruitvale Cemetery.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all the emergency personnel that attended the home that night, to Personal Al-ternatives for their assistance with the arrangements, to Father Jim McHugh & Elizabeth Stephens for the service, and to our friends and family for all of their support during this dif cult time.

As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, St. Michael’s School or the MS Society of Canada.

Broken Chain

We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.Ron Tranmer

The Elk Valley would become his permanent home. Bob worked at Fording River as a machinist until retirement. Bob loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and sherman. He will be greatly remembered for his quick wit and one-of-a-kind personalities.

Bob leaves behind his loving wife Rosemary, his three girls Su-san (Don) Tait, Lori (Kim) Krish, and Sheri (David) Taylor, his grand-children Jason (Julie) Tait, Jessica (Jason) Bown, Jared (Tiffany) Krish, Ryan and Adam Taylor and his great grandchildren Lincoln and Levi Bown and Emi Krish.

He also leaves his mother Seena, sisters Donna and Linda. He was predeceased by his father Gordon and brother Larry.

In order to respect his request, there will be no service but instead just a simple toast to acknowledge and honour a man that will never be forgotten and that can now be at peace and free.

“Miss Me”When I come to the end of theroad and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom- lled room. Why cry for a soul set free!Miss me a little, but not too long, and not with your head bowed low.Remember the love that we onceshared, miss me but let me go.For this journey we all must take, and each must go alone. It’s all part of the Master plan,a step on the road to home. When you are lonelyand sick of heart,go to the friends we knowand bury your sorrowsin doing good deeds.Miss me, but let me go.

OBITUARIES

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S SMONTREAL - A crimson tide engulfed a

patch of Montreal Saturday at the city’s first-ever gathering of the redheads.

The event was organized on Facebook by a ginger-headed Montrealer who wanted to fos-ter a greater sense of community among those who shared her hair colour.

It attracted hundreds of enthusiastic par-ticipants from all over the province, ranging in age from toddlers to seniors.

Only natural redheads were invited. Many who showed up shared memories of

growing up with ginger hair - and say it wasn’t always easy because they stuck out.

Marilyn Lamonde, a 25-year-old Montrealer, said the event felt a little like the “revenge of the redheads. It’s actually pretty cool, every-body talking about their different stories when they were young getting made fun of,” said Lamonde, who wears her red hair in a bob.

“We connect in the way that we all got teased when we were younger.”

But the organizer of the Montreal gather-ing, Celine Dompierre, wanted to focus on the positive.

She asked everyone to wear white to the gathering on Montreal’s Mount Royal, and had a professional photographer on hand to take photos, including a massive group shot.

Audrey Bisson, a 17-year-old from just out-side Montreal, said she made a few friends her age who share her hair colour.

“People used to make fun of us, and now we’re here and proud of being redheads.”

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SROME - Giulio Andreotti personified the

nation he helped shape, the good and the bad.One of Italy’s most important postwar fig-

ures, he helped draft the country’s constitution after World War II, served seven times as pre-mier and spent 60 years in Parliament.

But the Christian Democrat who was friends with popes and cardinals was also a controver-sial figure who survived corruption scandals and allegations of aiding the Mafia: Andreotti was accused of exchanging a “kiss of honour” with the mob’s longtime No. 1 boss and was indicted in what was called “the trial of the century” in Palermo.

He was eventually cleared, but his legacy was forever marred.

Still clinging to his last official title, senator-for-life, Andreotti died Monday at age 94 after an extended period of poor health that included a hospitalization for a heart ailment.

Andreotti grew more stooped with age, and infirmity kept him from what few official dut-ies remained, such as opening the inaugural session of the new Senate in March, a privilege reserved for the eldest-serving member that fell this time to the next-in-line.

Andreotti, a key player in the now-defunct Christian Democratic Party that dominated politics for nearly half a century, helped bring prosperity to what was once one of Europe’s poorest countries. When a corruption scandal flushed out the old political guard in the 1990s, marking the end of the first Italian Republic, he survived.

But he lost political clout after he became

a senator-for-life in 1991, an appointment that freed him from electoral cycles but also deprived him of capital in the backroom deal-making that helped create his reputation as a Machiavellian politician. And so, Italy entered the so-called second republic, characterized by stalemates and infighting, and dominated by other parties and other men, such as Silvio Berlusconi.

Arguably among Italy’s most important statesmen, having also served eight times as defence minister and five times as foreign minister, Andreotti will be buried with a small private Mass, not a state funeral befitting of his contributions to the nation. The choice was made by his family, according to Italian media, and is perhaps a reflection of his mixed legacy.

The condolences that flowed in also under-scored Italy’s uncertain judgment on a figure who dominated discourse for decades.

In announcing the death, Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno called Andreotti “the most representative politician” Italy had known in its recent history. Pier Ferdinando Casini, a centrist political leader, said he was certain that “history will give this statesman a more sober and serious opinion than his detractors made during his life.”

President Giorgio Napolitano, at 87 a con-temporary of Andreotti, said history would judge his career but he wanted to extend a national salute to a man who represented Italy overseas and in Europe with “exceptional” skill.

OPINION

NDP asking B.C. voters to trust themWhen Adrian Dix

took over as B.C. NDP lead-er two years

ago, he struggled to com-municate, especially in the sound bites of radio and TV.

There was a running joke in the legislature press gallery: It didn’t matter what question you asked him, you got a six-minute answer that ended with the evils of log exports.

Even more than under Carole James, the NDP railed against log exports. “B.C. logs for B.C. jobs” became one of Dix’s favourite slogans.

As the election approached, another Dixism was heard daily: “Say what you’re going to do, say how you’re going to pay for it.”

So it was a surprise a few weeks ago when the NDP signaled it would essentially not offer a policy on log exports. They’re going to meet with “stakeholders” and come up with a plan after

they get a majority gov-ernment.

This is exactly the same non-policy the NDP had in 2009.

They don’t have an answer to the industry’s point that the high price gained by premium logs in foreign markets is what keeps many loggers work-ing, and subsidizes the harvest of other logs for B.C. coastal mills.

Another thing the NDP doesn’t like is private power development. This issue featured prominent-ly in the NDP leadership contest two years ago.

Leadership contender Mike Farnworth told the party faithful he would study independent power purchase contracts, and if he found that they are not in the public interest, he would “mend them or end them.”

Another leadership hopeful, energy critic John Horgan, allowed that he would “break” con-tracts if necessary.

By this spring, Dix had

a new non-position on power purchase contracts. He will “assess them and address them.” The print-ed platform promises a review “within the lim-its of existing contracts.” Either they plan to risk a costly legal battle, or they’re just paying lip ser-vice.

All you have to do to find out is elect them.

Labour code changes are another blank slate. A memo from the B.C. Federation of Labour executive to members last year described how they were working closely with

the NDP to rewrite B.C. labour law.

The NDP election plat-form punts this issue until after the election as well, promising an independ-ent expert panel to decide on issues like whether to end secret-ballot votes for union certification.

This isn’t just a bad idea, it’s a 30-year-old bad idea.

It’s based on the destructive old notion that employers are the enemy of workers, and only a union can protect them.

The long decline of union membership in the private sector isn’t caused by employer bullying or secret-ballot votes that protect employees’ free-dom of choice. The cause is global competition. The only protection workers have from that is their own efficiency.

Balancing the budget? An NDP government will strive to do that over “the business cycle,” says finance critic Bruce

Ralston. Old-timers might remember this one. It’s taken from the NDP’s 1991 election platform.

Yes, 22 years ago there was a widespread belief in a predictable four-year cycle of commodity prices and other economic deter-minants. Whatever was left of that dusty, faded picture was erased with the financial collapse of 2008.

If you still believe in a predictable “business cycle,” you may be willing to accept that an NDP-led B.C. will become the first jurisdiction in human his-tory to eliminate poverty, by setting annual targets and paying out borrowed money to low-income par-ents.

On ferries, fracking, union contracts, capital construction and other weighty matters, the NDP’s answer is the same: trust us.

Looking to open thedoor to a new home?

Check out our classified pages andbeyond for local real estate listings.I’m concerned that many

British Columbians are more focused on “change” for the sake of change

rather than electing the party most likely to foster job cre-ation and financial stability.

Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I have seen and heard, an NDP govern-ment would rev-up spending while stymieing resource develop-ment through endless environ-mental reviews and or by just saying “no”, driv-ing investment to other provinces and other countries.

We need new mines and gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by tech change and by events like the pine beetle catastrophe

Economic development and the protection of the environ-ment are not mutually exclu-sive.

Yes, we must be good stew-ards of our beautiful province, but we do have the technology to move the economy forward in an environmentally respon-

sible manner. Saying no to new projects will mean job losses for currently employed and no opportunity for young people looking to join the work force.

We also need to focus on bal-ancing the provincial budget, rather than taking money away from social programs to fund rising interest costs. Forty years of experience in business

has taught me that too much debt is crip-pling.

It scares me that the NDP have rolled out billions of dol-lars in new spending dur-ing this cam-paign, and their “every dollar is accounted for” rhetoric just

isn’t credible because their anti-development attitude will reduce revenue at the same time as spending rises.

There is truth to the adage, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”.

The NDP came to power in 1991 and governed the rest of that decade. Investment dried up and economic growth trailed the rest of Canada. A low point came when the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce thanked the BC government for driving growth

investment in Alberta. Glenn Clark’s 1996-1999 tenure was arguably the most disastrous for BC and with Adrian Dix, Premier Clark’s former Chief of staff leading the province, I’d be very worried about history repeating itself.

It took many years for the Liberals to repair the damage. During their time in govern-ment, North America suffered through a major recession and yet we now have a triple-A credit rating, higher than the US government, allowing BC taxpayers the lowest possible interest rates

Have the Liberals done everything right? Certainly not. The introduction of the HST by the Campbell govern-ment was badly handled.

There have been other gaffes and ill thought out policies.

And while there is a natural inclination for people to vote to change long governing parties, it’s important not to let the NDP sleepwalk to victory with-out thinking about which party is likely to create jobs and not burden today’s young people with a mountain of debt.

I’m not asking that you agree with me, only that you think through the full conse-quences of your choice care-fully. And then get out and vote on May 14.

Commentary

An editorial from the St. John’s Telegram

It’s fun to stir things up online - to post a few zingers in the comments section of a website, especially when you’ve gone to the trouble to try and hide your identity.

Who cares if it isn’t true, you might think. Who cares if you don’t even know anything about the issue?

It’s just a bit of anonym-ous fun, repeating things you might have heard from a friend of a friend, or even something funny you’ve made up. Just a few comments to drive other commenters into a frenzy, so that once they start calling you sexist or racist, you can lean back in your computer chair and have a few giggles.

Well, that kind of fun just got a little more complicated.

That’s because former Toronto Maple Leafs coach Brian?Burke has launched a lawsuit against 18 bloggers and commenters, many of them using pseudonyms, who posted comments suggesting Burke’s firing was precipitated by an affair between Burke and a SportsNet anchor - a relation-

ship that both Burke and the anchor said did not take place.

Burke issued a statement about his lawsuit, saying in part, that it was “time to stop people who post comments on the Internet from thinking they can fabricate wild stories with impunity.”

One of the anonymous post-ers? A 20-year-old Ottawa stu-dent named Zack Bradley.

“It’s a crazy idea, right? a I thought it was just a rumour. I said speculation,” Bradley told the Toronto Star last week. “What I said wasn’t probably true and I just removed it because I don’t want anything bad to happen in the future.”

It’s a little late for that. Bradley is a journalism stu-dent at Carleton University, so he should probably at least be starting to understand what the concept of libel is.

What may be harder for Bradley and others to grasp is that the Internet is not just a wall where you can paint your comments and then simply dis-appear again into the darkness: not only does it record your comment precisely, but it also tracks the route your comment

took, a route that can later be recovered - which, lawyers sug-gest, is precisely why Burke has launched an action that names a group of people using pen names. Launching the action starts legal efforts to peel back the layers of the Internet to find the posters’ true identities.

Is there a moral in this whole tale? Perhaps that you shouldn’t post things that aren’t true, or that you can’t prove. Five minutes of fun stir-ring an Internet bees’ nest is hardly worth months of won-dering what a lawsuit - even an unsuccessful one - might do to your finances, your sleep and your career. And in case you’ve decided to change your ways and fly straight, turning your back on all the trash-talking of years’ past?

There’s only one problem, something that you should really be aware of: the Internet doesn’t forget. All of those comments and the trails back to you and your computer terminal are safely filed away somewhere in the giant perma-nent filing cabinet that is the World Wide Web, just waiting for someone to ask.

A pseudonym doesn’t save you

The Grand Forks Wildlife Association is concerned about the declining population of deer and elk in the wild.

In order to try and restore the habitat of wild ungulates (hoofed animals), the association is work-ing on a slashing and burning project to inhibit the encroach-ment of forests into the grass-lands.

“Many years ago, you used to be able to drive through (the North Fork) and be able to count thousands of mule deer on the south facing slopes from Christina

Lake to Rock Creek,” said Brian Hancock, president of the Grand Forks Wildlife Association. “Now you would be hard pressed to count 100.”

Lisa Tedesco, habitat biologist with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations said that the slashing improves the quality and availability of for-age for the deer.

“A lot of (shrubs) have grown so tall that they can’t actually reach the new shoots or they aren’t even putting out any new shoots, so there is not a whole lot of nutritional value there,” she said.

Champions unveiled

whlTrail native Joey Baker and the Portland

Winterhawks evened the series with with Montrose’s Luke Bertolucci and the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday with a 3-0 victory in Game 2 of the WHL Championship in Portland, Ore.

Edmonton took the first game on Friday by a score of 4-1, thanks to a pair of goals by Henrik Samuelsson and a 35-save performance by Laurent Brossoit.

But Game 2 was all Portland as Ty Rattie got his 16th goal of the playoffs and the 46th goal of his WHL playoff career to lead the Portland Winterhawks to a 3-0 win over Edmonton.

Rattie scored on a power play midway through the first period, leaves him one shy of tying the WHL record of 47 career playoff markers, set by Mark Pederson of the Medicine Hat Tigers in 1988. More importantly, Rattie’s marker helped the Hawks even up the best-of-seven champion-ship series at a game apiece.

The battle for the Ed Chynoweth Cup heads back to Edmonton for Games 3 and 4 tonight and Wednesday.

ahlWarfield native Craig Cunningham helped the

Providence Bruins stave off Calder Cup elimina-tion in the American Hockey League’s Eastern Conference quarter final on the weekend with a game-tying goal, as the Bruins won two straight on the road against the Hershey Bears to tie the best-of-five series at two games apiece.

In Sunday’s Game-4 match, the Bears led 4-3 with three minutes remaining, but Hershey took a delay of game penalty and the Bruins would capitalize. Cunningham took a pass at the left circle and one-timed it by the Bears goalie to tie the game with 2:34 left on the clock.

Carter Camper then won it for the Bruins, when he rifled home the winner from the top of the circle with 1:04 remaining, netting a hat trick and forcing game five on Wednesday in the 5-4 victory.

Hershey won the opening two matches in Providence, but the Bruins battled back with a 5-1, Game-3 win on Saturday. Cunningham picked up an assist in the game, while Chris Bourque led the way for the Bruins with two goals and an assist, and Niklas Svedberg stopped 30 shots for the Bruins in the victory.

The deciding fifth game goes Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Eastern in Providence, R.I.

B y J i m B a i l e yTimes Sports EditorAfter undergoing

some last minute polish, the Home of Champions monu-ment will be officially unveiled on Thursday with a grand slam of Greater Trail cham-pions added.

Former world-ranked kickboxer Terry Yuris will join ski instructor Grant Rutherglen, hockey player Trevor Johnson, and actor Kevin McNulty to augment the 117 local lumin-aries already etched into the pillar in front of the Kootenay Savings Credit Union on Farwell St.

Trail native Yuris is a former Canadian Kickboxing champion, at one point ranked number one in the world. Yuris started practicing karate and transitioned to kick-boxing in its formative years.

By the time he was 23 Yuris had won 21 of 23 amateur and profes-sional fights, and was one of the top-ranked full-contact karate fighters on the planet, but a promising career was cut short by knee injury.

“We knew he was champion, and had risen right to the top in kick boxing so the nomination didn’t need a lot of meat to it,” said Trail Historical Society’s Jamie Forbes. “This is what the whole process is for, is to bring to the public’s attention people in your community that have really excelled in some fashion.”

Johnson was nom-inated on the strength of a stellar hockey career. It all began early for the talented defenceman, as he led the Rossland-Trail Pee Wee reps to a pair of provincial titles in 1995 and 1996.

As a 15-year old defenceman he played for the Trail Junior Smokies, then the Beaver Valley Nitehawks before being drafted by and playing three seasons for the Kootenay Ice of the WHL, where he went to the Memorial

Cup in 2000. Johnson also

played for the Seattle Thunderbirds and TriCity Americans from 2001-03, and the Muskegon Fury of the International Hockey League where the rookie all-star won a championship.

Johnson then took his skills to Italy, and is in his sixth sea-son playing in the Lega Italina Hockey Ghaccio. He is cur-rently playing with the Valpellice HC, and has laced them up for the national team in three IIHF world champion-ships, and is winner of two ‘B’ division world championships.

Johnson recent-ly helped the Italian men’s ice hockey team secure another spot in the A division of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Cup last month.

Rutherglen is no stranger to the inter-national alpine ski scene, he excelled both as a competi-tor and a coach. The Trail resident is also a recent inductee to the Canadian Ski Coaches Hall of Fame, and has been coaching young skiers for over 40 years.

He helped develop the Red Mountain Racer program making it one of the most suc-cessful ski programs in North American. Over 30 Red Mountain Racers went on to train with the national team, and Rutherglen coached nine of them. Today the Trail resi-dent is a CSCF level 4 coach and exam-iner, and continues to develop both the skills and character of young athletes at Red.

Actor Kevin McNulty was born in Penticton in 1955, but at the age of three his family moved to Warfield, and later to Rossland. One of his first roles was with the Rossland Light Opera Company where at 16-years-old he played ‘Ole Joe in a produc-tion of “Showboat.”

After attending Washington State, McNulty graduated from the prestigious

acting program, Studio 58 in Vancouver. He spent two years at the Stratford Festival before going on to act in an eclectic and var-ied mix of over 150 roles in film, tele-vision, and stage.

He has worked with such film icons as Katherine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier, as well as contemporary headliners Jessica Alba and Samuel L. Jackson. A prolific and talented actor, his acting cred-its include roles in the Beach Combers to the X-Files on television, and The Accused to Fantastic 4 on film.

McNulty currently plays Mel Ivarson on CBC’s Arctic Air, and resides in Vancouver with his family.

All nominees adhere to a strict cri-teria, and are chosen based on having made a significant contribu-tion to the commun-ities of Greater Trail; or, for having reached a significant level of achievement in his/her chosen field.

Nominees are selected from three categories: Sports, Lifestyle and Business/Science.

“They (the Home of Champions board) look at the nomina-tions they’ve received and, they consider them . . . based on the information the nominators provided, the board does not go and seek further infor-mation on their own,” said Forbes.

The Home of Champions induc-tion ceremony will be held at the Riverbelle on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Champions monu-ment unveiling on Farwell St.

hockey product, Todd Robinson, and the Allen Americans kept pace with the Wichita

Thunder with a victory on Sunday that tied the series at 2-2.

The Americans out-

lasted the Thunder in a tight-checking 2-1 victory Sunday after Wichita had taken a 2-1 series lead in Game-3 Saturday with a 5-2 vic-tory.

Robinson was held off the board in Game-4 but picked up two assists in the loss Saturday giving him four goals and 14 help-ers to sit second overall in playoff scoring.

Teammate Brian McMillin, who finished with a goal and an assist in Sunday’s vic-tory, leads all playoff scorers with 11-9-20.

McMillin netted the winner, scoring 2:46 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Allen.

Americans’ goalie Aaron Dell stopped 35 shots between the pipes.

Game 5 of the best-of-seven series goes tonight at 7:05 in Allen, Tex.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESSSAN JOSE, Calif. -

San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan sees no need to remind his team of the precar-iousness of a 3-0 ser-ies lead in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Sharks near-ly squandered that advantage the last time they held it, needing the full seven games to eliminate Detroit in the second round two years ago.

With many of the same core players still around, McLellan is content to let past experience serve as the teaching tool heading into Game 4 of the ser-ies on Tuesday night at the Shark Tank.

“We just left it alone,” McLellan said.

“Our group is mature enough. They should know what’s coming, what to expect and how to respond.”

Given the com-ments coming out of the dressing room on Monday, it’s clear McLellan is correct. Players echoed the mantra that the fourth win in a series is always the hardest and insisted nothing had been won yet despite a decisive 5-2 win in Game 3 that followed two narrow victories in Vancouver.

“I was here when we went through that and we let a team back into a series,” centre Logan Couture said. “Obviously it went seven games. We were fortunate to win it. We let them back in. That’s something we don’t want to do. We want to put them away in Game 4.”

There’s one big difference from that series two years ago when the Sharks eked out three straight one-goal wins to build their cushion over the Red Wings. Their edge over the Canucks so far has been more convincing, especially in the 5-2 thrashing on Sunday.

After beating the Sharks in the Western Conference finals and taking a 3-2 lead in the Stanley Cup finals over Boston two years ago, the Canucks have been downright abys-mal in the post-sea-son.

Vancouver has lost nine of its past 10 playoff games, hav-ing also fallen behind 3-0 in the opening round a year ago to Los Angeles before being eliminated in five games.

The other big ques-tion for the Canucks comes in goal.

Schneider allowed five goals on 28 shots and was replaced after giving up three in the opening 4:07 of the third period.

Luongo stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief and has a .915 save percentage in the series.

Vigneault said he has made a deci-sion about his starter for today, but won’t announce it until after he tells the players.

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SSCRANTON, Pa. - The actors who play Pam,

Jim, Dwight and other beloved characters from the popular NBC show “The Office” bade farewell on Saturday to the northeastern Pennsylvania city of Scranton that served as the TV setting for their fictional paper company.

The NBC mockumentary about a clan of quirky cubicle-dwellers at the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Co. wraps up May 16 after nine sea-sons, and a crowd estimated at 10,000 attended a “Wrap Party” in Scranton to show their apprecia-tion.

Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson and other stars rode in classic convertibles and posed for hundreds of photos as fans thronged around them.

Dear Annie: My hus-band works at a private college. His male boss had an affair with one of the female directors under him. My hus-band and his assistant found out about it and, after much delibera-tion, brought it to the attention of the human resources department. The president of the college was informed, but he only put the two guilty parties on sus-pension for two weeks.

My husband and his assistant still have to work for this man. He constantly undermines them, and it is obvious that there is no future for my husband at this college. The affair is still going on, and my husband has told no one else. The spouses are in the dark, too.

My husband has only worked for this college for a few years. Until this affair, he loved his job and did it well. Our daughter graduates high school next year, and we were hoping she could attend this

school tuition-free. Instead, we may have to move, losing whatever benefits we may have accrued.

Should my husband ask for compensation when he leaves, such as some kind of tuition benefit? The president is about to retire and has no interest in mov-ing my husband to a different department. How do we handle this? -- In a Bind

Dear Bind: How does your husband feel about the situation? If his daughter were guaranteed a tuition-free education at this college, would he be able to stick it out for another year or two until she is established?

Is the president of the college the only one who can transfer your husband to another department? Would it do any good for him to go back to the human resources department? Please discuss his options, and then let him do whatever he feels is best. We know you have a vested inter-est in the outcome, but it is his job, and he should make the final decision.

Dear Annie: My husband and I have eight grown children between us and an ever-increasing num-ber of grandchildren. We make a good liv-ing, but when several of them come home for the weekends, the grocery bills get very high, especially when I have to buy for those with food allergies and unusual preferences.

Now that some of our kids have good sal-aries, what’s the best way to say it would be nice if everyone chipped in when we have week-

ends together? I find it difficult to ask, and some of them get a little annoyed that we would even think they should help. They’ve been known to send requests for the meals they want.

I’ve thought about sending out an email with the anticipated menus and asking them to let me know whether they would like to bring or prepare any of it. Is that fair? -- Too Good of a Cook

Dear Cook: This is your family, and they are staying the week-end. They should be pitching in at every meal, and you should not be afraid to tell them so. Since they refuse to offer gra-ciously, it’s fine to send a group email and assign a type of dish (starch, vegetable) to each child. Be upbeat and excited about their contribution to the weekend, and say you can’t wait to taste their cooking. They can swap assignments or ask

to prepare something else, but if they bring nothing, please do not compensate by cooking it yourself. Simply say you’re sorry there will be less to eat.

Dear Annie: I read the response from “Frank” about guests who track snow into

the house. His sugges-tion is for the hostess to let people know in advance that they will have to take off their shoes.

Nobody wants snow tracked into their home. If there is snow on the ground, why don’t you already

know that you’ll have to remove your shoes at the door? -- Glass Half Full

For Wednesday, May 8, 2013 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Right now you have strong ideas about financial mat-ters, including how you earn money. Don’t let someone older or more experienced discourage you today. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Today the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Mars are all in Taurus. This is such a strong day for you that you likely will get your way. (Avoid disputes with partners late in the day.) GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you feel social today, for the most part, you want to hide. That’s just fine. Work alone or behind the scenes to get the most done. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) In group situations, espe-cially dealing with females, you might find that some-one opposes you. Be polite,

but remember: You don’t have to give in. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Relations with authority figures, especially parents, are tested today. Why not consider this an opportunity to practice patience? After all, patience is a wonderful, rare virtue. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You’re full of ideas about travel, publishing and high-er education; nevertheless, someone might shoot you down late in the day. Don’t let this discourage you. Go forth with your colors flying! LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Someone might oppose your ideas about how to share or divide something today (especially late in the day). You can listen to what this person says but you don’t have to follow his or her suggestions. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Conversations with part-

ners and close friends might create a bit of tension today, especially later in the day. Be patient with these obsta-cles, because you have to compromise right now. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) At work today, quite like-ly, someone older or more experienced will oppose what you want to do. You might have to acquiesce if you can’t convince him or her you know what you’re

doing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Be gentle when dealing with children today, even though you feel critical. Remember: “Criticism does much, but encouragement does more.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) This is a dicey day deal-ing with authority figures, especially parents. Quite likely, they will oppose you.

If you ask for something, their reply will be, “Talk to the hand.” (Patience.) PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) If others oppose you today, don’t be too discouraged and don’t fall into worry mode. This is just a temporary dark cloud on your horizon. YOU BORN TODAY You are very brave and confi-dent in your point of view. You have strong opinions and you’re not afraid to

defend your beliefs; you’re certainly not afraid to speak out. Personally, you love to be surrounded by beauti-ful things, which is why many of you are collectors of antiques and collect-ibles. Your year ahead is the beginning of a fresh new cycle. Open any door! Birthdate of: Melissa Gilbert, actress; Martha Wainwright, musician/songwriter; Peter Benchley, author.
