Faster Internet service and a first time look at Optik TV is coming down the wire for residents in the City of Trail.

On Friday, Telus announced a $6 million investment in Trail in 2013

to improve its communica-tions infrastructure to 95 per cent of city.

“Ultimately, what this means is that residents and businesses in Trail will soon be linked to the most advance communications infrastruc-ture offering the best speeds and Internet-based services available,” said Lisa Sauve, Telus media relations.

Sauve said that current service rates will not change

as a result of the upgrades, though customers will notice more speed in the level of service, and access to new technology as it evolves.

“The last major upgrade was completed in 2009,” said Sauve. “This newest upgrade, replacing the majority of the communication cables in the area with fibre optics, will provide access to new servi-ces that were not previously available.”

Essentially, Telus custom-ers will have their homes wired directly to fibre optic cables which increases Internet speed two to three times and allows access to Optik TV service.

Sunshine and warm weather seem to be a natural trigger that encourages car buffs to get out and shine up their babies after a long winter hidden away in garages and Saturday’s Cruizn the Columbia Show and Shine event at Gyro Park in Trail proved that in spades.

Over 130 entrants from as far away as Enderby came out for the West Kootenay Smoke and Steel Car Club’s annual event.

There were long cues for the Rustic Crust pizza and Filipino food stalls and the park concession staff were busy flipping burgers and frying up chips for the hungry crowd.

“This is our biggest turnout yet,” said club president, Wally Drezdoff. “I’d estimate around 2,500 to 3,000 people went through the show, a couple of vendors sold out of food because they weren’t expecting that much of a turnout.”

Judging by the smiles and looks of long-ing on some faces as visitors took in the rows of gleaming chrome and highly polished custom paint jobs, North American car culture is alive and well in the Kootenays.

“We’ve got 60 members in the club but a bunch more signed up at the show,” said Drezdoff. “The number one charter of the club is to have fun and people seemed to do that today.”

FROM PAGE 1Work is underway now, and the new ser-

vices will be available to Trail residents and businesses later this fall.

The other communications giant in the area, Shaw Cable, isn’t being left in the dust, because in May, the company issued a prom-ise to expand its service to Trail, in a letter addressed to city council.

A two-year long fibre connection project from Alberta to the West Kootenay was recent-ly completed and upgrades to its hub site in Castlegar are underway.

What this means to area residents is the addition of television channels, in particular Spokane stations; increased Internet speed; and ‘potentially’ home phone service available in the late fall.

“These enhancements are the result of $4 million work of investment Shaw has made,” said Jeff Bray, manager BC Shaw communica-tions.

Earlier this year, the City of Trail completed a $145,000 mission to improve its Internet ser-vice by installing a fibre optic network in front of businesses in the downtown core.

Connector locations for end users were added to enable enhanced Internet service to private users at a reduced cost, said Duane Birnie, information system coordinator for the City of Trail.

An optical fibre is flexible and transparent, made of glass or plastic, and slightly thicker than a strand of human hair.

Optical fibres permit transmission over longer distance and higher bandwidths (data rates) than other forms of communication.

B y T i m e s s T a f fA Fruitvale senior's walk ended with him

getting whisked away in an ambulance in the wee hours Friday morning.

His wife reported him missing when eight hours had passed since he left the house, according to Trail RCMP Sgt. Rob Hawton.

“He was last seen going for a walk toward the railroad tracks,” said Hawton in a news release. “Being away for this amount of time and that late was definitely not normal.”

South Columbia Search and Rescue was activated after midnight and the man was later located near the tracks east of Fruitvale at about 2 a.m.

“He had become exhausted and sat down, however was then unable to get back on his feet,” explained Hawton. “There were no obvious signs of injuries, however hypother-mia had started and he was taken to hospital by ambulance for examination.”

While Rossland primary students enjoy their last couple weeks in MacLean Elementary School, school district staff plan for the future of the dismissed facility.

The Golden City will have a chance to add its voice to the discussion on the disposal of the school, a solidified plan to generate funds for School District 20, during an open house tonight at 7 p.m. at MacLean.

Possible decisions include putting the school up for sale in the open mar-ket, leasing it out for a short time while the district gets a handle on projected enrolment or selling it to an interested buyer from a different school district.

“It's not a secret that (the Francophone School District) expressed an interest so that will certainly be one of the options that we'll put out to the public on Tuesday,” explained Greg Luterbach, SD20 superintendent of schools.

Mark Wilson, SD20 board member, said the board has received a letter

that confirms École des Septs Sommets would like to relocate from the Annex to MacLean.

“First off it's just a letter so we don't know if they have money or if they have the student population,” he added. “It's an asset so we can't just give it away because the budget is so tight.”

No rash decision will be made until K-9 is running smoothly at Rossland Secondary School (RSS), at which time Rossland's grades 10-12 will bus down to J. L. Crowe Secondary.

“We have to make sure we can accom-modate the kids in Rossland Secondary,” said Wilson. “Just in case there is a glitch, we have to keep MacLean on our books. Once we've got the kids trans-ferred to Rossland Secondary, then we'll start entertaining the sale.”

In-house maintenance crews are cur-rently prepping RSS for its renovation from a high school to a facility that will

soon accommodate primary students.A group of teachers, parents and dis-

trict staff designed a floor plan that will come to life when a renovation contract in awarded.

The project, at a cost that can't be disclosed while the job is out to ten-der, includes taking previous speciality spaces like a metal shop and trans-forming it into general class space.

The scope of the work also includes adding primary elements like sinks and cubbies in corridors for the younger students.

RSS currently has nearly 300 stu-dents but is projected to house 450 when it's changed to a K-9 facility this fall while Crowe's enrolment level of approximately 730 students will bump up to over 800 when Rossland's older students join the pack.

How quickly MacLean is sold depends on feedback from the community, said Luterbach. The public meeting will open the floor to possible sale routes, some which take less time to pull off.

Selling the facility to another school district doesn't involve ministerial approval, said Luterbach, adding that the board may make a decision as early as its next meeting at 7 p.m. on June 17 at the Trail Middle School.

VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark plans to call the B.C. legislature back into session by the end of June, to begin debate on her government’s budget while she cam-paigns in a by-election.

Clark chaired the first meeting of her new cabinet Monday, after she and the 19 cabinet ministers were sworn at a ceremony

at Government House. She said the session will emphasize the same themes as the B.C. Liberal election campaign, balancing the budget and mak-ing the economy, not the government, grow larger.

A by-election in Westside-Kelowna will be announced this week, and Clark said she hopes to have a seat in the legislature by the end of July after

losing Vancouver-Point Grey to the NDP in the May 14 general election.

Veteran Richmond East MLA Linda Reid is to be nominated for speaker of the legisla-ture. Clark said there will be no new legisla-tion introduced in the summer session, aside from an updated ver-sion of the February budget.

Cabinet ministers were given “mandate

letters” itemizing their priorities in the new government. Among those is one to new Education Minister Peter Fassbender, instructing him to seek a 10-year agree-ment with B.C. teach-ers, whose current contract expires June 30.

Clark also empha-sized that the “core review” of government programs would be a key task for all cab-inet ministers. That will look for functions that don’t need to be done by government, and on reducing exces-sive regulation that Clark said is a natural accumulation of gov-ernments over time.

Clark acknowledged that B.C.’s public ser-vice is already one of the leanest in the country, and said the latest review will not likely result in sub-stantial job losses.

T h e c r a n B r o o k T o w n s m a nTwo males aged 18 and 21

who were reported missing early Sunday morning have still not been located.

Police were called around 2:30 a.m. after two males who had been camping at Whitetail Lake had not been seen since 3 p.m. Saturday. At 6 a.m. Search and Rescue teams from Kimberley and Columbia Valley along with RCMP began combing the area.

Around noon a spot was locat-ed along the Findlay Creek Forest Service Road where a vehicle had left the road, went down a steep embankment and into Findlay Creek. Further checks by a SAR rope team found personal items belonging to the subjects on the bank near the water.

Search teams concentrated their efforts downstream from this location for the rest of the day. Neither the missing persons

nor the truck were located. In addition to ground search teams a helicopter was utilized to check along the creek in areas inaccess-ible.

Currently the water levels are very high which makes search-ing difficult. The area around the creek is steep and rocky, limit-ing access. The visibility is low. The RCMP dive team has been involved but the flow of the water is too fast to safely put divers in the water. A RCMP helicopter will be searching the area again today.

Friends and family gathered at the site during the search, Victim Services assisted them in dealing with situation. Missing is Stephen Thomson from Canal Flats and Nicholas Hoefnagels from Carstairs Alberta.

Findlay Creek Forest Service Road is located off of Highway 93/95 west of Canal Flats.

The water level in Okanagan Lake is swishing right around its targeted maximum, and a rainy spell could push it even higher.

The lake level was at 342.46 metres above sea level, two centi-metres below the so-called full pool mark at which officials from the responsible gov-ernment ministry try to keep it.

“I’d like to stress that’s a target that we like to reach, but sometimes we go

over that,” said Des Anderson, whose heads the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations’ pubic safety and protection office in Penticton.

“A slight deviation from that number should be insignifi-cant to most people, (but) there are some (homes) that were built below the prop-er flood construction level, and they would begin to experience seepage from ground water.”

Anderson said the

lake typically reaches full pool in late June, but a spell of hot weather in May hast-ened the spring melt.

“What that does is it gives us less time to get water out. So the lake is reaching this (full pool) benchmark early,” he explained.

The dam at the south end of the lake in Penticton was dischar-ging water at a rate of 64 cubic metres per second as of Saturday morning.

That’s slightly above its design dis-charge capacity, and regulations in place to prevent damage downstream mean the release can’t be bumped up further.

Anderson said, however, that as long as the Okanagan escapes heavy rain, officials are confident they can keep the lake level under control.

“It looks manage-able, but really it’s tough to say, because these past few years we’ve had quite a bit of precipitation in June. That’s the caveat.”

Meanwhile, a June 1 bulletin from the B.C. River Forecast Centre noted the snowpack in the Similkameen basin was at just 35 per cent of normal.

For the Okanagan-Kettle basin, it was pegged at 76 per cent of normal.

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S SOTTAWA - After

two years of study and discussion, the fed-eral government has finalized new rules for medical marijuana and granted a reprieve to pharmacists who opposed the rules in their draft form.

Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq rolled out the regulations today for formal pub-lication in the Canada Gazette on Wednesday.

Under the new regime, the govern-ment will no longer produce or distrib-ute medical pot and medical marijuana users will no longer be allowed to grow the product at home.

Health Canada said since the medical marijuana program was introduced in 2001, it has expanded to 30,000 people from the original 500 authorized to use the product.

“This rapid increase has had unintended consequences for pub-lic health, safety and security as a result of allowing individuals to produce marijuana in their homes,” the department said in a news release.

“Under the new regulations, produc-tion will no longer take place in homes and municipal zoning laws will need to be respected, which will further enhance public safety.”

Under the new regulations, the gov-ernment will allow patients to buy pre-scribed amounts only from licensed growers who will be required to meet strict conditions.

In previous versions of the regulations, pharmacies were to distribute the product just like other medica-tions, provoking con-cern from pharmacists, who expressed con-cerns about dispensing a product without suf-ficient research. They

also cited security con-cerns.

The final version removes the pharma-cists from the loop, leaving patients to rely on mail order for their medical marijuana.

“While the courts have said that there must be reason-able access to a legal source of marijuana for medical purposes, we believe that this must be done in a controlled fashion in order to protect public safety,” Aglukkaq said in a statement.

She used similar reasoning last week when she introduced new hurdles for the creation of supervised drug-injection sites in response to a court ruling.

Physicians and pharmacists alike questioned the regu-latory changes, saying

there is little evidence that medical mari-juana is either effective or safe.

“We believe that the new federal medical marijuana regulations put patients and the general public at risk,” Dr. Rocco Gerace, president of the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada, said in a statement.

“Physicians should not be asked to pre-scribe or dispense sub-stances or treatments for which there is little or no evidence of clin-ical efficacy or safety.”

In December, the president of the Canadian Medical Association, Dr. Anna Reid, described the proposed marijuana rules as “akin to ask-ing doctors to write prescriptions while blindfolded.”

OPINION

MLA expense cleanup must continueAs she unveiled

her new cabinet, Premier Christy Clark promised

a “line-by-line” review of government spending to deliver a balanced budget this year.

Statements such as this would have more credibil-ity if politicians subjected their own personal spend-ing to the same scrutiny. That’s still not happening in B.C.

Expense accountability has come a long way in the last year, thanks main-ly to the work of now-departed Auditor General John Doyle, who swung the cobweb-covered door open on B.C.’s secret-ive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. Chaired by the speaker and run by senior MLAs from both parties, the committee had been doing pretty much whatever it wanted with MLAs’ own expenses.

Doyle’s audit found that MLA credit card bills were being paid without

receipts, part of a lax accounting system that included inaccurate bank records and inadequate management of the legis-lature gift shop and din-ing room. The operating budget of the legislature and constituencies runs to more than $60 million a year.

Now-retired speaker Bill Barisoff asked the auditor to give a pass to the $119,000 annual allowance for each of the 85 constituency offices. Transfer amounts and payroll expenses were verified, but constituency expenses were not, like-ly because these records weren’t kept either.

I’m not suggesting that there has been any misuse of public funds. The point is we don’t know, and the notion of an “honour system” for politicians’ expenses has become unacceptable.

A similar toxic tale has been unfolding in the Senate in Ottawa. It has its own secretive commit-

tee called the Board of Internal Economy, which was forced into the open after trying to sweep Senator Mike Duffy’s housing claims under the red rug of the Senate chamber.

Duffy has lived in Ottawa for decades, first as a TV host and then sen-ator, but he decided the rules were loose enough that he could claim his summer place in Prince Edward Island as his prin-cipal residence.

An audit has also found he was claiming living expenses in Ottawa while

campaigning for the Conservatives back east. It turns out the key ingredi-ent in an honour system is honour.

This mess goes back more than a century in B.C. and Canada, and has its roots in the British Parliament, where MPs and Lords had a system of claiming all sorts of expenses, including con-struction of a “duck house” and maintenance of the moat around an Honourable Member’s castle.

Many years ago, British MPs convinced themselves that they were underpaid, and rather than create a public fuss by giving themselves a big raise, they would be able to top it up by claiming up to 250 pounds at a time with-out receipts. Cheers!

You can imagine how well that worked out. As one observer put it, the system was not only open to abuse, it was actually designed for it.

Here in B.C., the next

step is obvious. If you go to the website of Alberta Premier Alison Redford, you can easily find the link to her detailed expense reports, itemized for travel, meals, hotel rooms and so forth. Alberta cab-inet ministers provide the same disclosure.

B.C. cabinet ministers’ travel expenses are now reported, but only as an occasional lump sum.

As a result of Doyle’s revelations last sum-mer, B.C.’s Legislative Assembly Management Committee now meets in public, with transcripts of proceedings available. But MLA expenses are still not itemized. Total expendi-tures are being reported on a quarterly basis, but with no detail to explain why some MLAs have much higher totals than others.

It’s time to sweep out the cobwebs.

My job takes me to many remote sites on narrow roads that require my full attention to navigate. I thought I had seen it all until the other night when I was driving home from work on a dirt road (the old Cascade Highway to be more precise). That night a lady in a small white car was texting while driving around a corner on the narrow dirt road. We almost met in a way we prob-ably would not have enjoyed.

I still see people talking on

cellphones while driving and maybe even worse, texting while driving. A lot can hap-pen in the matter of a few seconds in a vehicle, even if you are driving slower that you normally would. This small car narrowly missed my full size pickup. Your car normally would have fared worse in a collision unless I drove off the side of the road trying to avoid you. In the future, please pay attention to the road.

Honestly, I have been in the

communications business for over 25 years and own a local shop that sells cellphones and the handsfree devices that you should be using if you must talk while driving, but do you need to text while driving? I don’t.

People, give your head a shake before spending that one moment on the cellphone that could change both of our lives for ever.

Texting and driving do not mix

An editorial from the Toronto Star

Last year more than 100,000 people were killed in Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Burma and other major hot spots where factional fight-ing was fuelled by a relent-less flow of illicit weapons. That’s why Canada’s key allies see the value of the United Nations’ latest bid to curb the global arms trade and tamp down at least some of the violence.

More than 65 countries including Britain and France, both big arms dealers, signed on to a landmark Arms Trade Treaty last week that aims to better regulate the $60-bil-lion-plus global arms mar-ket. The Americans, too, have made it clear they are onside, subject to the approval of Congress.

Yet when others were hail-ing the historic document Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government chose once again to embarrass and isolate Canadians by snubbing the UN and holding out.

The Conservative govern-ment now plans to take its sweet time to decide whether to sign a treaty that an over-whelming majority in the UN General Assembly - Canada included-voted on April 2 to endorse.

In Parliament this week, repeatedly pressed by the New Democrats to “sign the deal now,” Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said the govern-ment “will be consulting” with Canadians, the prov-inces, industry and others

before making up its mind. He also raised a bogus con-cern about the opposition wanting to “bring in through the back door” the long-gun registry the Conservatives killed. That makes no sense. The treaty focuses on cross-border weapons transfers. It doesn’t interfere with national sovereignty, legitimate arms sales or domestic gun laws. If this is the sort of consultation Baird has in mind, it won’t be a very productive exchange.

Has the Conservative gov-ernment lost its moral com-pass?

The Arms Trade Treaty is intended to curb the uncon-trolled flow of weapons and ammunition to criminal regimes, terrorists and others who commit war crimes, ter-rorism, piracy, organized crime, atrocities and human rights abuses. Once it is for-mally ratified by 50 nations, likely within a year, it will come into effect.

“The treaty a will make it harder for weapons to be diverted into the illicit mar-ket, to reach warlords, pirates, terrorists and criminals, or to be used to commit grave human rights abuses or viola-tions of international humani-tarian law,” says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

“The eyes of the world are watching arms traders, manu-facturers and governments, as never before. From now on, weapons and ammunition should only cross borders after the exporter confirms that the transfer complies with inter-nationally agreed standards.”

Given Canada’s modest niche as an arms supplier, this should be a no-brainer for any government with a sense of its duty to protect the innocent. We should sign with no further delay.

Canada’s support is needed precisely to help shame major arms suppliers such as Russia and China to sign on. Every country that holds out gives others cover to do the same. As with other agreements that targeted landmines and cluster munitions, the treaty’s success depends on wide sup-port and strict enforcement.

Under the treaty, countries are required to conduct risk assessments and set up mech-anisms to block sales of con-ventional weapons if they vio-late arms embargoes; if they risk promoting acts of geno-cide, crimes against humanity or war crimes; or if they are likely to be used in attacks on civilians or protected insti-tutions such as hospitals or schools.

The treaty covers every-thing from missiles and launchers such as the S-300s that Russia is selling Syria, to warships, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, battle tanks, artillery, armoured combat vehicles and light arms.

The treaty is essentially about “naming and shaming” governments that traffic in arms to gunrunners and other bad actors.

Why that should give the Harper Conservatives even a moment’s pause is hard to understand.

Snub to arms treaty shames Canada

Long-time Trail hockey coach Ken Koshey is riding high after receiving a Coach of the Year Award this weekend from BC Hockey.

This comes after earning recognition as an outstanding volunteer and securing $20,000 for Greater Trail Minor Hockey this spring from the Kraft Hockey Goes On promotion that awarded a total of $1 million to 25 minor hockey associa-tions across the country.

“It was a big surprise and I felt really honoured to receive the award,” said Koshey from his home in Trail. “This has been an awesome year with the Kraft deal and now this.”

The 68-year-old traveled to Sun Peaks, Kamloops, for the 94th annual Awards Banquet Saturday, when nine awards were dolled out in a variety of categories.

The Ernie Gare Award is given to the prov-ince's top coach who shows leadership to players, demonstrates skill development and has a sound philosophy. This award is given in memory of the late Ernie Gare of Nelson.

“It was kind of special because Ernie Gare was a pretty high-level man in B.C. hockey and also when I first came to Trail.

“I played him when I was with the Senior Smoke Eaters and he was with the Nelson Leafs.”

Koshey has been coaching for about 40 years, ranging from Junior B through to Novice.

Following his playing career with the Trail Senior Smoke Eaters in the mid 70s, he entered the coaching world with the Trail Minor Hockey Association.

He worked his way up through the ranks, serving as an assistant coach with the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and Rossland Warriors of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

He has since moved back to coaching the younger players at the Novice and Atom levels.

During the summer months, Koshey can be found puttering around his yard “waiting for winter.”

Hockey is his life. It all started with a pair of skates at four years old in his hometown Dauphin, Manitoba, where if he wasn't on the outdoor rink, he was playing shinny.

He doesn't plan on leaving coaching anytime soon.

His passion for teaching kids in Trail will keep him going “until his legs fall off,” he said.

Brad Harding and Creston's Kowan O'Keefe captured top spots in their respect-ive B.C. Golf provin-cial qualifiers over the weekend.

One dozen senior golfers and 10 amateur golfers, representing six area courses, teed up for the two-day zone provincial quali-fiers held at Christina Lake on Saturday and Rossland's Redstone Resort on Sunday.

Up for grabs were

four berths in each div-ision and a chance to compete for a provin-cial title.

“Once again the courses were in good condition and the play-ers enjoyed the chal-lenge the two differ-ent courses provided,” said Don Courson, B.C. Golf's Zone 1 West chairman.

Harding topped the field in the seniors event in his first try at that age group.

He carded a 73 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday for a two-day total of 150.

That was 10 strokes better than his near-est competitor Dan Knutson of Castlegar.

Knutson, who post-

ed a total of 160, was one of three Castlegar golfers to make the final four in the senior flight. He was followed by Al Axleson at 162 and Vic Jmaeff at 163.

On the amateur side, O'Keefe got off to a blazing start on Saturday and never looked back.

The Creston-based golfer fired a six-under par 30 on the front nine at Christina Lake and finished with a 68 on the first day. A round of 74 at Redstone was enough to give him a two-stroke cushion over Christina Lake's Jordan Hoodikoff who finished in second.

O'Keefe is no stranger to success this year. A sopho-more at Minot State University in North Dakota, O'Keefe was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's (NSIC)

Golfer of the Year last month. He won the NSIC championship, had seven top-10 fin-ishes.

This will mark his third trip to the B.C. Amateurs. His best fin-ish was a tie for 22nd in 2011 in Kamloops.

Christina's Tanner Kopan posted the best round of the day at Redstone with a 72 and finished third in quali-fying with a two-day

total of 145.Redstone's Kevin

Bennett grabbed the final berth with rounds of 73 and 76 for a 149 total.

The B.C. Amateur championship will be held July 9 to 11 at the Springs at Radium. The B.C. Senior cham-pionship, for players 55 and up, will be held July 29 to 31 at the Eaglepoint Golf Resort in Kamloops.

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SCHICAGO - Two

franchises, rich in history, talent and star power. Two win-ning teams that know what it takes to bring home the Stanley Cup. Intrigue, in the form of a schedule that kept them away from each other for an entire sea-son.

Oh, there’s plenty to love about this ser-ies.

The Stanley Cup finals kick off Wednesday night when the Chicago Blackhawks host the Boston Bruins in the first finals matchup of Original Six franchises since Montreal beat the New York Rangers in five games way back in 1979.

The mighty Blackhawks, winners of seven of the last eight games, have a deep roster that really found its identity when pushed to the limit by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round. Then there are the playoff-tested Bruins, who rolled over favoured Pittsburgh during an impressive sweep that gave them a chance for a second NHL title in three sea-sons.

It’s a gift wrapped in a bow for a league still trying to recover from a bitter lockout that wiped out 510 games and pushed the start of the season back to Jan. 19.

“It’s a special couple places, the tradition of the Bruins and the Hawks is special,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “I’m sure, you know, the rivalry could return instantly come Game 1. I think it’s good for the league. It’s good for hockey. Two great hockey markets. We’re very excited to be a part of it.”

Chicago advanced with a 4-3 double-overtime victory over Los Angeles on Saturday night, using a hat trick from Patrick Kane to elim-inate the defending champion Kings in five games in the Western Conference finals. Back in the Stanley Cup series for the first time since 2010, the Blackhawks are in search of another title to pair with their six-game victory over the Philadelphia Flyers three years ago.

“Everyone has that drive to win the Cup,” Chicago forward Andrew Shaw said. “It’s

going to be a long road ahead here. It’s sur-real. I’ve wanted this since I was a kid. I’m excited to get started.”

Boston is roll-ing again after los-ing its spot atop the Northeast Division in the final days of the regular season.

The Bruins have won five in a row and nine of 10, boosted by a familiar group of stars who led the way when they won it all in 2011. David Krejci scored four times in the Pittsburgh sweep and leads Boston with nine goals and 12 assists in the playoffs.

“The excitement is there,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said Sunday. “You’ve heard people say, ‘Once you’ve been there, you want to go back.’ It’s true, we really want to go back; we made it happen. We’re excited about it and we also know what kind of challenge lies ahead for us. It’s about acknowledging that and being ready for it.”

While Boston and Chicago have kept an eye on each other for a while now, there’s no way for either team to grab a real hold on what to expect at the very beginning of the series.

That’s because the abbreviated 48-game schedule due to the lockout included no games against teams from the other confer-ence.

That’s right, the Bruins and Blackhawks haven’t played since Oct. 15, 2011, when Boston won 3-2 in a shootout in Chicago. There are no mutual opponents this year, not even an All-Star game to compare the players from each con-ference.

“I think all the information is out there for both teams to understand how we both play,” Julien said. “There’s no secrets there. Again, like I said, it’s only the head to head, how the two teams are kind of going to clash, what’s going to happen when we do. It’s as simple as that.

“It’s about having confidence in what you plan on doing and going out there and executing it, that’s all you can do.”

the “American Idol” post-season tally.Fox said Sunday that longtime executive pro-

ducers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick are exit-ing the singing contest. Its 12th season ended in May with a record low-rated finale.

The producers follow judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson out the door.

Fox confirmed the producers’ departure after Lythgoe said online that he’d been “fired” from the show.

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SNEW YORK - The suspense thriller “The

Purge” topped the weekend box office with a shocking $36.4 million that doubled indus-try expectations, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Universal also claimed the second spot at the box office, as the Vin Diesel action flick “Fast & Furious 6” earned $19.8 million in its third week of release. The sixth installment of the street racing series has now earned a total of $202.3 million domestically and $381.7 million inter-nationally.

The comedy “The Internship” opened with $18.1 million. But that was good enough only for fourth place behind two hold-overs: “Fast & Furious 6” and “Now You See Me.” The illusion-ist heist film earned $19.5 million over the week-end, bringing its haul to $61.4 million.

Dear Annie: My son’s ex-wife has reported him to child protective services six times and to the police for various things she’s invented over the past three years. Due to her false accusations, he has been arrested three times. He has been found innocent of all charges, but she persists.

She charged him with violating a restraining order and appeared in court last week flanked by body-guards supplied by victim services. This charge was thrown out. My son has never touched her, but she has convinced many people that he is dan-gerous. She is such a good liar that she actu-ally believes her own stories, which makes her even more con-vincing.

My son has become so paranoid, he barely leaves his house. He is so depressed that he can barely function and is unable to work. She

is slowly killing him. Is there anything he can do besides con-tinue to defend him-self? The lawyers’ costs have become a night-mare for our whole family. There must be something more we can do besides waiting for her next dramatic step. -- Worried Family Members

Dear Worried: Your son may need to go on the offensive. What his ex-wife is doing is harassment, and he should ask his lawyer about suing her. He also can search for a divorce support group in his area or online and get into low-cost therapy for his own well-being. He needs to

get his life back.Dear Annie: My

dear friends’ daughter recently married. When she first got engaged, she announced a small wedding, and I offered to make silk flowers. I do this professionally and had most of the supplies.

Months later, it turned into a huge event. I also was in the middle of a major move. I agonized over finding the exact color and got frustrated when I need-ed to do more flowers than I had originally planned. I also had to buy additional supplies because what I had in mind wasn’t acceptable to the bride. Since I had moved, I needed to find new suppliers. I spent hours running around and emailing the bride about her specifications. I knew it was going to cost me hundreds more than I planned, so sev-eral months before the actual wedding, I opted out of attending. I was newly unemployed and

simply could not afford it. But I found the per-fect “bling” that the bride wanted and sent the flowers to her.

I never received so much as a thank you. Her last email was, “Are you still coming?” I refused to answer. Not once did she ask, “How are you?” So Bridezilla had her day, and now my friend is not speak-ing to me.

Was I wrong not to attend? I told my friend I wasn’t coming. -- The Friend Who Wasn’t There

Dear Friend: You are never obligated to attend a wedding unless you are a par-ticipant. And your flowers were a lovely gift for which the bride should have thanked you and over which she undoubtedly drove you nuts. However, when the bride asked wheth-er you were coming to the wedding, it was rude of you to ignore her email. Perhaps if you apologize first, the friendship can recover.

Dear Annie: To “Frustrated Daughter-in-Law,” whose moth-er-in-law doesn’t get out and do things, has it ever occurred to her to ask her mother-in-law to go with her to these places?

I am a widow, and after a lifetime of hav-

ing someone with you, it is hard to do things by yourself. I prefer having someone I know go with me, but no one wants to be bothered taking me anywhere, so I sit at home. If she would take her mother-in-law to these places, Mom could see how

much fun it could be, perhaps make a friend and then take it from there on her own. -- Fort Myers, Fla.

trip suddenly might fall into your lap. Whatever happens will require a swift decision on your part. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Make friends with your bank account today, because something unusual might occur with funds or debt that you share with oth-ers. This also could apply to inheritances, shared prop-erty and insurance matters.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) A friend or partner might surprise you today. Perhaps this person demands more freedom? Whatever the case, stay light on your feet, and be ready to go with the flow. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Computer crashes, can-celed meetings, staff short-ages and power outages are just some of the reasons that your day at work will

go sideways in a New York minute. Allow extra wiggle room. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) This is an accident-prone day for your kids or for chil-dren you work with, so be extra-vigilant. Know what’s happening at all times. (However, romance might provide exciting flirtations.) YOU BORN TODAY You are generous, cheerful and optimistic. You like to be

active and quite literally in motion. You also are prag-matic and resourceful. Your positive energy and enthusi-asm are the secrets to your success. Even if troubled, you will mask your pain with a smile. In the year ahead, all your relationships will improve, and you will be socially busier. Birthdate of: Anne Frank, diarist; Eamonn Walker, actor; Christine Sinclair, soccer player.
