Traffic Signal Study County: Fairfax Intersection: Fox Mill Road & Pinecrest Road Date: March 2, 2017 Origin and nature of request: Citizen request An engineering study is required to determine the need for a new traffic signal. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), published by the Federal Highway Administration, is nationally recognized as the standard for conducting these engineering studies. Traffic volumes, crash history, operating conditions and physical characteristics are collected and compared to the conditions or “warrants” found in the MUTCD. If one or more of the MUTCD warrants are met, an operational analysis should be performed to evaluate the intersection function, both signalized and unsignalized. Traffic signal control should not be installed unless the study shows that a signal will improve the safety or operations of the intersection. This document provides a summary of the findings of this intersection’s traffic signal study. An engineering study is required to determine the need for a new traffic signal. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), published by the Federal Highway Administration, is nationally recognized as the standard for conducting these engineering studies. Traffic volumes, crash history, operating conditions and physical characteristics are collected and compared to the conditions or “warrants” found in the MUTCD.
