Four Tips for Growing Your Small Business

(StatePoint) Despite the time commitment and financial investment that come with the territory, more than 25 million people nationwide have opted to start a microbusiness – a company with five or fewer employees.

One in every 10 Americans works in a microbusiness, according to the Sam’s Club/Gallup Microbusiness Tracker, a quarterly survey of more than 850 microbusiness owners that provides insights into their economic and emotional concerns. The Sam’s Club survey indicates that women are opening 46 percent of today’s Main Street businesses – from restaurants to daycare centers – far greater than the number of women owned businesses that are over 20 years old.

“I’ve never worked harder in my life or felt more rewarded,” says Molly Beasley of Fairhope, Alabama, owner of Give a Dog a Bone, a Do-It-Yourself dog washing company. “This business is my passion. There’s a lot of satisfaction in knowing you are providing a valuable, afford-able service in your community.”

After more than two years working 20 to 40 hours a week at a DIY dog wash in California, Beasley relocated to Alabama and found herself dreaming about opening her own dog wash. Eventually, she decided the timing was right to take the entrepreneurial leap and she hasn’t looked back. Since launching Give a Dog a Bone in 2012, Beasley caters to customers Monday through Sunday and spends her downtime thinking about ways to grow the bottom line. Indeed, growth in microbusinesses has been driven largely by high personal sacrifice yet over-all job satisfaction, according to the survey:

• Over 60 percent of microbusiness owners have financed their businesses from personal savings and nearly as many (55 percent) say hav-ing access to cash reserves is a major issue. • One in three microbusiness owners (31 percent) depend more on second jobs for their person-al income than on the business thelaunched. • Yet 69 percent of microbusiness owners feel they have the ideal job.

New Mexico’s Texting While Driving Prohibition Takes Effect

Santa Fe — The New Mexico Department of Transportation reminds New Mexicans that the state’s prohibition of texting while driving is in effect.“Texting while driving is now the leading cause of death for teen drivers,” said Governor Susana Martinez. “There is no text message, no Facebook post, no tweet, worth a person’s life. All of us can play a role in keeping our roads safe — and that means keeping our eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and our minds on driving safely.”Governor Martinez signed New Mexico’s texting while driving prohibition into law in March. It prohibits texting while operating a motor vehicle, except when summoning medical or other emergency help. Violators will be fined 25 dollars for the first offense and 50 dollars for subsequent violations. New Mexico now becomes the 42nd state to ban texting behind driving.According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, sending or receiving a text message takes an average of five seconds, which at 55 miles per hour is the time it takes to travel the length of a football field. Studies also show that texting while behind the wheel is the same as driving after having consumed four beers.Violators of the texting ban will be fined 25 dollars for the first offense and 50 dollars for subsequent violations. With the passage of the law, New Mexico became the 42nd state to ban texting behind driving.When Governor Martinez signed the texting while driving prohibition into law in March, the New Mexico Department of Transportation unveiled the latest in a series of commercials geared towards spreading the word about the dangers of texting while driving, as well as a mobile app, DNTXT. When activated, the app silences incoming text messages, and sends an auto-reply message to the sender notifying that the user is driving and cannot respond.
