On December 24th is celebrated one of the brightest Christian holidays-Christmas Eve .

The whole family gathers around the table. It is served only meatless dishes that are an odd number – 7, 9 or 11.

La veille de Noël Badni Vetcher Le 24 décembre les chrétiens orthodoxes célèbrent une de plus grandes fêtes Badni Vetcher. Toute la famille se rassemble аutour de la table. Оn mange un repas végétarien. Le nombre des plats doit être impair- 7, 9 ou 11.

Christmas Eve

KoleduvaneThis is a ritual performed by group of young men- koledari . They make a round of the homes from midnight to sunrise. They sing Christmas carols for good health, happiness and fertility.

Koledouvane ( Les chants de Noël)

Ce rite commence à minuit et continue jusqu'au lever du soleil. Les Koledari, jeunes hommes célibataires ou fiancés font le tour des maisons. Ils souhaitent de la santé et de la prospérité en chantant.

SurvakiSurvaki is a Bulgarian folk custom. On this day children prepared survaknica-decorated cornel stick. The young boys (Survakari) go from house to house wishing the householders good luck, health and prosperity.

SourvakiSurvaki est une rite folklorique bulgare. D'abord, les enfants décorent une branche de cornouiller- survatchka. Ils font le tour des maisons où ils présentent des voeux de santé et de prospérité.

Epiphany /Yordanovden/ is a Christian holiday that the Priest throws the Holy Cross into the water.

Épiphanie /Yordanovden/ c`est une fête chrétienne. Ce jour le prêtre jette la Sainte Croix dans l`eau.

Young men jump into the ice cold waters and try to take out the cross. It is believed that the one who succeed to catch the cross will be healthy and alive all year round.

Des jeunes hommes y plongent pour récupérer la croix. La victoire apporte de la chance et de la santé pour l`année prochaine.

(Babinden) Grandmother’s day Grangmother’s day is a Bulgarian

custom, in honоr of old woman accoucheuse (in the past). This custom is reserved till nowadays.

BabindenC'est une coutume à l`honneur de l`accoucheuse ( la sage-femme ) dans le passé. La coutume est vive d`aujourd`hui.

Trifon Zarezan On February 1st by an old Bulgarian tradition we celebrate Trifon Zarezan-the day of the wine and the vine-growers.

Baba MartaBaba Marta is a mythical character in the Bulgarian folklore. Each year the Bulgarians gift martenitsi for health and happiness. Martenitsa is a little ornament of twisted white and red threads of wool or cotton yarn.

Baba Marta Baba Marta est un personnage mythique dans le folklore bulgare. Chaque année, les Bulgares échangent des Martenitsas –le symbole de santé et de bonheur. Martenitsa c`est un petit ornement de fils blancs et rouges entrelacés, de laine ou de coton.

KukerovdenThe Kukeri or Masked Dancers are the Bulgarian carnival figures –men, dressed like beasts or characters with masks on their heads, with bells on the waist. The Kukeri dance on the streets to drive away evil spirits and cold, to bring fertility and health.

KoukerovdenLes Koukeri sont des figures de carnaval - hommes déguisés en animaux ou de personnages avec des masques sur la tête, avec des cloches sur les hanches. Les Koukeri dansent pour chasser les mauvais esprits et l`hiver (le froid), pour une récolte abondante et beaucoup de santé.

Todorovden /St. Todor’s dayTodorovden is celebrated on Saturday , the first week of the Lent. Horse-races are held in honor of St. Todor.

TodorovdenTodorovden est célébré le samedi de la première semaine de Carême. On y fait les courses de chevaux à l`honneur de Saint Théodore.

Lazaruvane is a Bulgarian custom.

Young girls participate in it, called

Lazarki or Lazarici.

The Lazarki go around the fields and

the houses, dancing and singing songs

about health, fertility, love and family

prosperity.

EasterEaster is a holiday on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is celebrated three days. The holiday is characterized by coloring eggs and preparation of cakes, called Kozunak. Tradition is to exchange painted eggs,a symbol of life and rebirth.

Les PâquesLes Pâques est une célébration de la Résurrection du Christ. On la fête pendant trois jours. Les traits caractéristiques de cette fête sont les oeufs colorés et la préparation de la brioche. Suivant la tradition on échange des oeufs, qui symbolisent le commencement de la vie.

Gergoiovden /St. George’s DayIt is the day of the bravery and the Bulgarian Army, patronized by St. George. It is celebrated also like a shepherd’s day.

Georgiovden / Saint Georges/C`est une fête nationale, le jour de l'armée bulgare protégée par Saint Georges. C`est aussi la fête des bergers.

Ramazan (sheker) bayramIt is celebrated four days. On this day the younger ones kiss hands to the older ones and ask for forgiveness.

Ramadan (Seker) Bayram On le célébre quatre jours. Ce jour- là, les jeunes baisent la main des plus vieux et demandent pardon.

Kurban bayram

Kurban bayram is celebrated three days. On this day is immolated a ram. It is prepared a dish, called Kurban, given to the poor people.

On le célébre trois jours. Ce jour on porte un mâle animal de sacrifice (de bélier). On prépare «Kourban», duquel on distribue aux pauvres.
