Performances by:Back BayouBack Bayou brings the traditional Cajun music of southern Louisiana to mid-Michigan . The band has been playing this lively dance music together for twelve years . The band’s accordion, twin fiddles, guitar, bass, percussion, and fine vocals get folks out on the dance floor well into the night . Back Bayou has performed for festivals, dances, parties, and special events around the state . The band is often seen playing for the traditional dance series of the Wheatland Music Organization . Members Jack Freeman (fiddle, vocals and dance instruction), Linda Freeman (triangle, rubboard and dance instruction), Roger Little (accordion, keyboard), Neil Mower (bass, accordion, guitar, vocals), Robin Mower (guitar, fiddle, vocals), Gerard Wauldron (drums) and Steve Callison (lead guitar, bass, vocals) have spent considerable time in Louisiana and at the Ashokan and Augusta Cajun/Creole heritage programs where they studied with well-known Cajun musicians . The best applause you can give to a Cajun band is to dance . Each Back Bayou performance begins with waltz and Cajun two-step dance instruction . However, Cajun music is great for jitterbug and swing dancing too .
Fiddle River Stringband The Fiddle River Stringband was formed through a collaboration of Mad River Theater Works with Fiddle ‘n’ Feet . The group includes Jamie Gans on fiddle, Tamara Loewenthal on feet and fiddle, Bob Lucas on banjo, guitar, and lead vocals, and Chris Westhoff on guitar and bass . In addition to driving old-time stringband music and some great harmony singing, their show integrates clogging and other percussive dancing into a high energy cocktail of sound and music . “We are committed to presenting the very best in traditional music and percussive dance from North America,” explains Tamara, in describing the group . “We’re versatile, musically speaking: Our music and songs are an eclectic mix of traditional and original material – Bob writes and sings the greatest songs - and the percussive dance is similarly far-reaching . We also teach percussive and traditional styles of dance, including calling and playing for square and contra dances . The social dance context for our music is the bridge from stage to dance hall, making it truly accessible .” In addition to presenting dance and instrument workshops they will be presenting “The Living Newspaper” on Friday evening, 8 PM, at the Main Stage .

Traditional Arts Workshops 2012
While recently visiting my daughter in Detroit, we pulled up to the parking meter, I got the quarters out of my pocket . She told me to put them away, pulled out her phone, entered the meter number and time in, it pays the meter through her Paypal account . Really… . My Granddaughter asked what the big black cd’s were in my living room (she meant the albums!) . Then my grandson started telling me about how his sister was downloading a video on her Ipod and asked her if she would send it to him when he gets big enough to have his own Ipod . He is only four . Oh my… Change… .am I showing my age by my lack of desire and participation in today’s connected world?
I say that because I have been reflecting on the recent changes at the Wheatland Music Organization . I realized how much had changed since I started on the board twelve years ago . When I was elected, the general rule of board succession was; board members headed up a committee along with their board duties and we had to stay until we found our replacement
We were a small board back then . We are no longer so informal or small! Many years ago, the board decided it had to have a succession plan and needed to recruit talented younger board members to continue its growth . During the past few years we have been successful in adding many young talented people who have the knowledge, heart, love of the mission and youthful energy to carry on the tradition and who are willing to help the organization grow and change with the competitive times . We will introduce you to the new faces of the board in the festival program book .
There has been another big change; WMO has a new employee starting in April to assist Lola in the office . Since around July, Lola has operated the office almost single-handedly . The new assistant will be responsible for keeping the website and the Facebook page up to date along with many other responsibilities . We welcome her to the Wheatland family! Look for a picture and short bio in the summer newsletter which you should receive early July .
Wheatscouts has new leadership and what a fine job they have done this past year . WMO appreciates the people who continue this very important link to the next generation of “wheaties” .
This newsletter is packed full of TAW information . This wonderful family week end is packed full of activities with something for all ages and interests . There are all levels of dance, art workshops and instrument instruction scheduled . It is a nice time to get outdoors, listen to and play music, move the feet around an un-crowed dance floor and learn something new or enjoy the familiar and visit with Wheatland family and friends . It’s a great way to start a new summer season .
I recently bought a piece of artwork that talked about the ride of life . A part of it says; Sometimes on the roller coaster of life we hang on to the bar for dear life and other times we put our hands up and just let go . And at the end of life the most we can hope for is that our hair is messed up, we’re out of breath and we didn’t throw up . But you know what? I don’t even care if I throw-up I’m finally enjoying the ride! I hope you are too!
Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t,
you are right. - Henry Ford -

Art Workshops for Adults (continued)
• BasicGoatMilkSoap with Joy Castonguay – Come and see why everyone is so interested in goat milk soap-making . Gone are the days of rendering smelly fats and hours of boiling caustic soap . Participants will discover how to get organized and create beautiful soaps with less muss than they thought possible! Work with natural colorants and fragrant oils to create a pound of beautiful, fragrant soap that will delight your senses and nurture your skin . Limited to 20 participants, 16 and over . No exceptions to age limit as you will be working with lye . (If you plan on participating in this workshop please bring the following supplies if possible:
Pyrex measuring cup (1 or 2 cup capacity), stainless steel whisk, rubber spatula, stainless steel mixing bowl (1 quart capacity), rubber or latex gloves, safety goggles, soap molds – please use plastic or silicone (yogurt and margarine containers work well) – six 4 oz containers, box or tray for transporting your soaps)
• SilkScarfPainting with Linda McLachlan – using permanent dyes and a resist, participants will paint their original design on a scarf 12”x60” which has been secured in a frame . A pattern is created first on butchers paper to use as a guide . If time allows, other designs could be made . This workshop is limited to 14 participants, teens and adults .
• SilkScarfDying with Linda McLachlan – while similar to Silk Scarf Painting, participants in this workshop will make scarves, not using a frame . Scarves will have a tie-dye scrunchy look . This workshop is limited to 15 participants, teens and adults .
• HotGlassBeadMakingwith Joan Huevelhorst – Using imported Italian glass rods and a gas torch you will learn how to melt, shape and design individual glass beads . You will take them home with you and from there the options are limitless . This workshop is limited to 10 students, 16 and up .
• Reflexology with Georgette Ames and Reiki with Jan Wilson – This workshop will be a combination of both Reflexology and Reiki . Reflexology is the practice of massaging or applying pressure to parts of the feet . It opens the nerve endings and allows blood to flow better, creating more oxygen in the blood . It is used to relieve tension and improve circulation . Participants will learn the ‘map’ of the feet w/pressure points as they correspond with different parts of the body . Reiki is Universal Energy . Receiving Reiki is a very simple process and can produce profound effects . This session will explain this process and help participants understand how this relaxing healing energy can work for them . They will be shown some breathing techniques that will help calm them . Reiki help0s balance ones’ energy system, releases stress, soothes pain and promotes ones’ own body’s natural ability to heal itself . Each participant will receive individual Reiki . Many tips will be given during the workshop that can be used for better sleep and self relaxation .
Joy CastonguayJoy Castonguay lives with her husband, Jim, near Freeport, Michigan . She began making soap over 20 years ago as a cottage industry while raising seven children, and she hasn’t stopped since . Her obsession has taken over her life, and she keeps busy researching and creating new products and fragrances . She will be teaching Goat Milk Soap Basics for adults and Suds ‘N Silks for kids .
