Welcome to our 4th annual bull sale back at the Bow Slope Shipping Assoc. in Brooks Ab. It has been quite a year at McKeary Charolais. To start it off we welcomed our second daughter Charlee Jade in June. Summer was good in our country timely rains, good hay crops. Fall was a new high for us, our herd bull PCC Spartan 4Y was crowned Reserve Champion Charolais bull at the Olds Fall Fair, and then finished it off with being crowned the Reserve National Charolais bull at Edmonton Farm Fair. January was a change for me with a career change; I am now a field Rep. for Bow Slope. Dallas and Lynn should have a brother or sister for Cole to play with by bull sale time. Ray has decided to slow down a little and is going to rent out some farm land so he and Mary Ann can spend some more quality time with their grand children.

With that being said, we should talk about what brings us here; the bulls. This is the first year to see the returns of the top cows we purchased from HTA Charolais,Raymond and Barb Airey. I think they complement our herd nicely and give a different look on blood lines, while keeping the top quality you have come to expect.

We are fortunate once again to be partnered with Ashbacher Angus, Wendy and Darrel and family, Prairie Cove Charolais, Tim Wanda, Tyler & Tanisha Bullick and Kopper LC Red Angus, Carey and Lynette and Family.

Not sure how I missed giving this guy a name, however the new owner can name him. Out of a first calver, an excellent Detour Son. Strong maternal family on this wide topped fellow. Along with this comes some nice muscle definition in the rear quarter. As well as excellent temperament.

Here is another gentle giant from Pearl. She is like an Oyster, every year she raises one of the biggest at weaning. This guy came in at 1018 lbs in Mid October. He is a balanced bull from front to back with lots of muscle shape and expression. With still lots of maternal traits in his pedigree. Excellent cow family. Number one ranked bull for growth.

My pick of the bull calves in the fall and he has turned out to be all of that. He is long, deep, and smoothly made. 4A is a Touchdown son and is the only one in the offering. I also have two females out of TD are keepers as well and in the replacement pen. If you like your bulls Cherry Red with the ability to put on pounds, check him out. Top 10% for weaning weight and yearling weight.

Well another year has come upon us and the Bulls get to come to town for your personal evaluations. They can be viewed at the farm located just south of the Hamlet of Millicent until Wednesday March 26/14 and then at Bow Slope Shipping. Together we bring about 65 head of yearlings and 2 year old Charolais and Black and Red Angus to create the Tradition Sale.I need to thank my wife for support and rational guidance in selecting and culling. You see, I love my cows and would let them live here as long as they wanted, but she is the keeper of the cull list and keeps us moving through, to create a better cow in order to create the best bulls I can for you the buyer. She also informed me I talk to much in the de-scriptions of the Bulls, thus I shortened it up this year in their data. So I will use this to brag on the Mama cows. The cows are what grows these guys. No Creep feeding during the summer and no extra feeding prior to weighing in the fall. The 205 day weights are what mama did with green grass and water. As calves, they get the full vaccination profile and are “Express Verified”, and at weaning they get their boosters to complete the program, along with Ivomec.Used some different genetics this time to try and increase the size of our females. So we used TG Big League 168X. They raised fantastic calves with excellent Weaning Weights. As well AI’ed to Detour, Winchester and Touchdown. We used our Smok’in Jo 64U for the last time. As he is the sleep at night heifer calver, at 6 he still had perfect untouched feet and an awesome temperament. We will sadly miss him and these sons are cookie cutter, smooth fronted and the females should be keepers. Kids are still heavy into the 4H program and my wife does the ‘Lion’s share’ of the calving, thus when new genetics are chosen we select on temperament as well as productivity and all the other criteria. We looked for bulls to fit both larger and moderate framed cows that were able to grow.The bulls have all been together since they were babies, so EPD’s are for this pen of bulls, and should show how they ranked against each other and the rest of the Red Angus cattle in Canada. Milk numbers for all these bulls are high, and the 205 day weights are very good.My family looks forward to seeing previous buyers and meeting new ones this year. All Canadian genetics in this Bull. His father is a nice long bull that adds length to his calves. His mother is very maternal as she has a +25 milk and is a larger framed cow herself, and after seeing him turn out over the winter he is aptly named.

Another member of my Oyen Pen Show Bulls. That goes to show the consistency of the Smokin Jo sons. His mother is another moderately built cow that we have come to appreciate. Her sons average weight is birth weight 81 lbs, with 630lbs 205 day average and her daughters average 80 lbs, with 630lbs at 205 days.

Another all Canadian genetic package. He had a tough start on life as his mother got very sick and so he was a little smaller at weaning but, he came into his own this winter. Smooth fronted and long.

Second calf from my Daughter`s 4-H Cow. He has also been to town a few times as a calf with his dam. As a yearling bull calf at Medicine Hat Pen Show and then Oyen. The cow is definitely one of our front pasture cows, with good feet and udder.

One of best performing bulls from this year’s crop. A cow family that is very fertile and has strong milk numbers. Very maternal cow families. The cow is a little larger framed and that is the only reason I would not use him on my own heifers.

This is a bull that I would have no issues using on heifers. He is backed by some strong genetics on both sides and the mother is an Elite Dam. Suds is a longer framed bull with a smooth front end and good structure. He is an impressive looking bull.

We parent verified our entire herd to make sure that the declared Sires and Dams matched. Well we found one mistake. This guys mother was from an AI’d mating that could not be determined. A very good bull as he is sired by the BJR Make My Day 981. Should have excellant maternal numbers. Sells unregistered.

56It is an honour to be in the sale with McKeary Charolais, Prairie Cove Charolais and Kopper LC Red Angus. At Ashbacher Angus, cows and calves come home from summer pasture about November 1st and go onto swath grazing. About a week to 10 days later weaning begins with calves staying on swath grazing and cows moved to another location. Calves stay on swath grazing until after mid December then are moved to the yard to start winter feeding of free choice baled hay with 5 lbs of grain. This program has worked great for longevity in the bulls as well as bulls that are quiet and easy to handle. A group of half sisters to these bulls have been exported to Russia.

EPDs:• allow breeders to estimate a young animal’s breeding value - that animal’s value as a parent• allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management• the best tool available to compare animals between herds, countries and year of birth• help breeders make informed decisions regarding breeding stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), carcass (REA,FAT, %IMF, etc.) and reproductive efficiency(CE, MCE, SC)• estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent, assuming similar mates

EPDs evaluate group averages and offspring’s performance. They can not predict individual performance or weights.

For example. If Bull A (weaning weight EPD of +10) and Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with ten similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring 10 be 50 Ibs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50).

To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs, the concept of “intermediate optimums”works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic correlations - for example, intense selection for high yearling weight will also increase birth weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improving profitability and efficiency.

TERMS AND CONDITIONSTERMS: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque. Settlement to be made immediately after completion of the sale, payable at par to Bow Slope Shipping Association. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerk before any cattle will be released.

Bidding: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. No by-bidding will be permitted.

Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in the dispute. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final.

Announcements: All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to such disclosures.

Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the breed association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

Health: All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.

Liabilities: All persons attend the sale at their own risk and the seller and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur.

Breeder’s Guarantee: The following extracts from the rules and regulations governing this sale be of special interest to those purchasing breeding stock.

“If in the opinion of the buyer an animal proves to be a nonbreeder, he must notify Bow Slope Shipping Assoc. within two months after the date of the sale. When an animal is proven by a veterinarian to be a non-breeder, the contributor agrees to refund the purchase price in full providing the bull is returned to the contributor in good physical condition, or to supply the purchaser with an animal of approximately equal age, quality and breeding. In either case, the non-breeding animal is to be returned to the contributor, and the purchaser is responsible for all transportation and veterinary charges incurred. The contributor is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies, nor the sickness not apparent at the time of the sale.’

“It is to be clearly understood that Bow Slope Shipping Association is acting only as a medium between buyer and seller and is not in any way responsible for any failure on the part of either party to live up to his obligations.”
