Triumph Students Travel to Memphis

Schools Foundation, Triumph students got to take part in a pretty awesome opportunity. Not only did they get a copy of the book Mississippi Trial, 1955 by Chris Crowe to keep, but they also got to attend a movie, eat dinner, and see a play in Ft. Collins.

The adventure began with students reading Mississippi Trial, 1955 in their advisement classes. The book is about Emmett Till, a young boy who was murdered for reportedly irting with a white woman. Students said that it was a great book and many were surprised at the amount of racism and the brutality of Tills death.

The second portion of the grant experience took place on Thursday, March twelfth. Around noon Triumph students and staff boarded busses to go attend the movie, McFarland USA. Its based on the true story of cross country team from predominately Mexican-American McFarland, CA. Even though the team faces many struggles, they work hard and come out on top as state cross country champions. This inspirational movie even managed to make some students and teachers tear up!

After this movie the group boarded busses to head to Fort Collins. The group got

to enjoy a delicious dinner at Golden Corral while Jessica Benn, a graduate student from CSU in Ethnic Studies, presented information from her graduate thesis on the impact of Whiteness in our world. Dinner tasted amazing and we received very good service from the Golden Corral staff. As soon as everyone had nished eating we were off again to attend the dress rehearsal of the play of Memphis.

The play was astounding. The actors were very talented and they were phenomenal singers. The play was about the rst white DJ, Dewey Phillips, to play black music on the radio in the 1950s. Students and staff got to choose from a variety of delicious cakes to devour while watching the show. Alyx Montoya said, I really liked the play. I was a little disappointed that the best singer didnt start singing until half way through, but overall it was really a great experience. The cake was probably one of my favorite partsI think I ate one of every kind!

Everyone who went on the trip had a great time. It was awesome to get to learn about how different things were back in the 1950s and how race issues are still present in our lives today.
