Current press release
„Elphi“ - the construction of the century
1. The old quay warehouse with its red tile brick facade forms the foundation of the Elbphilharmonie. The former warehouse for cocoa, tea and tobacco was gutted completely at the beginning of the construction works.
2. The glass facade consists of 1,100 window elements, partially elaborately arced and individually printed with a grid of grey chrome points. The entire facade equals the area of two football pitches.
3. The Tube: The visitors can expect a panorama window with a harbour view at the end of the 82 meter long upwardly curved escalator. Another 20 meter escalator will lead you to the Plaza.
4. The Plaza is a central platform at a height of 37 meters which is freely accessible as a public area. The surrounding walkway around the whole building provides a fantastic view on the port and the city. The total space of the Plaza is 4,000 square metres which is almost as big as the Hamburg Town Hall Square.
5. The Grand Hall is the heart of the Elbphilharmonie: The Grand Hall with its 2,100 seats is built in accordance with the vineyard principle, having a stage in the centre which is surrounded by terrace-shaped seating rows.
6. The sound reflector which hangs from the centre of the tent-shaped arched ceiling provides the excellent acoustics of the hall. Thus, the ascending sound is evenly distributed in the entire room.
7. The four-manual organ with 65 registers and additional registers inside the reflector below the hall’s ceiling completes the Grand Hall.
8. The Small Hall is located at the eastern part of the building and is equipped with a flexible stage technology and provides seating for up to 550 visitors.
9. On one hand, the quay studio in the base construction (150 seats) will be used as a location for experimental music, presentations and workshops; on the other hand it will be the centre of the music-teaching offers which are stretching over two floors of this building. The musical museum which is a very important part of these offers will find a new home here as well.
10. The foyer bar on 15 th floor is the gastronomic centre of the concert area. Other bar zones invite guests to stay during breaks.
11. The hotel on 14 storeys providing 250 rooms, a wellness and conference area is located in the Eastern part of the building.
12. The 45 flats are spacious apartments with glass fronts and balconies which provide spectacular views on Elbe, harbour and city.
13. Parking garage: the seven-storey parking garage in the basement building has parking spaces for more than 500 cars. A spindle leads into the car park which is reached via an access road at the eastern side of the building.

„Magical, spectacular, breath-taking“These were the first words of the visitors after the inauguration of the Elbphilarmonie on the 11th and 12th January, 2017. Those statements focused on the extraordinary architecture of the building, which is located in the estuary of the river Elbe, the unique geometry of the “Great hall“ with the “White Skin“, the spectator terraces which are based on the model of a vineyard and the surface structure of the outer building with its 16,000 square meter glass facade which magically mirrors the light and reflections of the water. The building, which is 110 meters high, combines three concert halls, gastronomy, a hotel, luxury apartments, a parking house and a public plaza with a breath-taking view on the entire Hanse city.
„Exceptional technology“The Elbphilarmonie offers superlatives and impressive technology, even in areas which are not visible to the naked eye. The building and room automation by GFR mbH provides a major contribution to the invisible magic of this unique location. A prime example for this is the indoor climate of the Great Hall which ensures the exceptional acoustics because people feel comfortable and optimum conditions are provided for the instruments.
DIGICONTROL automation systems are applied in all areas of the building and the integrated parking garage. A total of 100 ventilation systems are controlled and regulated. They contain 260 fans, about 1,900 fire dampers and approximately 600 smoke extraction and louvre dampers. GFR technology in terms of DIGICONTROL systems operates the energy centers, 425 single room control units for various fields of application with individual requirements and the cold water generation with the control of the cooling water supply by means of water from the river Elbe and a deep well system.
„The building automation systems arebased on DIGICONTROL and BACnet“Two independent management and operation controls, WEBVISION and the energy data management system WEBENCON, which can be operated from six decentral locations, are used in the technical facility management. 384 BACnet Building Controllers (B-BC) “DIGICONTROL ems2.CP04D“ and three automated optical fibre ring bus systems with 660 subscribers and 77 frequency converters, that communicate via BACnet MS/TP, are integrated into the building network. The communication of the energy consumption is performed via the integrated M-Bus and KNX systems. Different kinds of third-party software, e.g. the hotel management system Fidelio, have been embedded.

Design, function and security in perfect harmonyThe topic security in the building automation sector has enormously increased in importance in recent years. The used technologies in automation and information technology are converging more and more and additional opportunities are created by “Internet of Things“ (IoT) on the one hand but building auto-mation systems are cost-intensive and durable on the other hand.
The vulnerability refers as well to data as to physical technical facilities like ventilation, light, power supply and other essential functions of real estates. The aspects of central control and adequate security of a building have especially become more important in the event of a blackout which is a realistic scenario of military defence.
In contrast to common IT technology, not only data are under serious threat. Due to the connection of the building automation system with the technical property equipment (heating, ventilation, illumination, doors, access control and hazard detection systems), attacks can have security-related implications and cause damage to the building. The real risk of a building lies in the building automation’s depth of impact. The security of network-based building automation takes place on two levels:
■ protection of individual devices, PCs and software and ■ protection of IT infrastructure: networks and their accesses.
The hardware and software of DIGICONTROL automation systems, WEBVISION 5 building management systems and WEBENCON energy data management systems contain access authorisation systems with password protection, encrypted communication, internal firewalls, VPNs, etc. for ensuring maximum pro-tection for devices and the entire building automation IT infrastructure.

DIGICONTROL ECONOMIZER
Award-winning technology saves a tremen-
The path-breaking and patented process for the energy-optimised control of air conditioning systemsRunning ventilation and air conditioning plants in buildings often involves high operational and energy costs. The expenses are particularly high in air-conditioning plants with the processes heating, cooling, humidifying and dehumidifying. Therefore it pays off having a closer look at building automation systems for the control of air-conditioning plants. Just optimising conventional systems is not sufficient. Innovative technologies have to be applied if you really want to take advantage of saving potentials and increase energy-efficiency.

DIGICONTROL HYDROMIZER
Exceptional comfort in heating and cooling
The “Hydraulic Compensation“The hydraulic compensation, if any, is usually performed during full-load operation and by means of an initial setup of the throttling devices in heating and cooling circuits. The partial-load operation is not taken into consideration which results in imbalances when the control valves are partially closed. Systems that have not been hydraulically compensated are often operated with a significantly excessive pump speed for sufficiently supplying the poorly connected consumers. This means: The plants are not operated efficiently, the rooms remain cold or are overheated or the temperature swings up and down.
Figure 3: Example
systems
For technology enthusiasts > How it works:The volumetric flow of each individual valve can be calculated in case of a known actuating value by measuring the pump pressure and the total flow rate via just a single sensor. Furthermore, the mutual in-fluence of the volumetric flows can be eliminated by individual valve operations. The following measuring values are sent to the Hydromizer to ensure its function:
■ The volumetric flow V point of the entire system ■ Differential pressure Δp which is generated by the pump ■ All valve positioning values Yi of the system (originate from the single room control) ■ Layout of piping, only series and parallel connection of radiators here
The hydromizer calculates the KVS values of the valves and the pressure loss coefficients ζ of the piping from the different correlations of the input values. The calculation with the minimisation of pump perfor-mance automatically results into fully opening a valve and the other valves working with actuating values below 100%. The pump is controlled in a way that the most poorly connected valve opens up 100%. All valves being better connected are throttled to such an extent that they are only passed through by their specified volu-mes. They are no longer preferred due to their hydraulic connection.
Figure 2: A system which has been compensated by me-ans of the DIGICONTROL HYDROMIZER
Figure 1: System WITHOUT hydraulic compensation
The DIGICONTROL HYDROMIZER module calculates the dynami-cally compensated state .....even if the hydraulic system has been compensated inadequately. Features:
Permanent hydraulic compensation during full-load and partial-load operation
Constant room temperature, no swinging, consistent heating
Energy saving of about 30% (pump)
Return temperature corresponds to dimensioning
No noises due to flow velocities that are too high
Little effort for planning and commissioning
Automatic detection of pressure loss coefficients in the pipe network
BACnet integration into existing BACnet systems
Low installation costs for ems4.HYDRO module: Simply snap it onto the top hat rail, con-nect it with the automation station via plug and configure it by means of webCADpro. The innovative Hydromizer software is embedded in the ems4.HYDRO module.

DIGICONTROL Retrofit
Cost-saving and effective refurbishment of existing systems
If new and extended requirements for the technical building equipment are laid down, the automation system usually has to be extended as well. Although the hardware of the auto-mation station is still in a good state, the entire automation station is replaced either because the existing automation station cannot be extended in a way to meet the requirements or due to limited availability. ems4.RF01E enables the extension, refurbishment and repair of existing DIGICONTROL or Saia PCD1-, PCD2-, PCD4- and PCD1.NT automation systems without discarding the existing I/O automation hardware. Savings up to 45% are realistic if you use DIGICONTROL Retrofit.
