REASONS FOR HOPES

• Increased support for renewable energy worldwide – COP21 agreement is a testimonial of this!

• Technical development enabling improved economics of renewable energy projects

• IFI’s and commercial banks are ready to finance RE projects more than ever (even though imposing their conditions)

• Big utilities are setting major objectives and restructure to boost renewable activities

• It is happening now:

– Brazil’s solar auctions are currently contracting for solar PV at around $ 80/MWh

– Recent tenders in Jordan resulted in bids in the range of $ 67 -80/MWh

– In the latest Chilean power auction in late October, 3 solar parks offered to sell power for $65-68/MWh.

– In the UAE, DEWA has tendered for the lowest-cost electricity to date, just under $60/MWh for a 200 MW PV plant

SOME REMAINING CHALLENGES

• Grid capacity to increase renewable energy penetration in the energy mix

– Technological solutions in development: Storage, increased balancing capactities

– Economical situation allows for grid curtailment

• Environmental impact: NIMBY

– Economical situation allows for environmental curtailment (ice, birds, shadow, noise, …)

• Financing of projects demanding for bankable solutions

– Trade-off to be made between cost-effectiveness and proven technology

THE ONLY WAY IS UP

• Renewable Energy is already leading in Europe

• Economics are drastically improving, cost competitiveness without subsidies is already a fact in certain regions of the world while costs are still going down every day

• Technological solutions will bring the answers on remaining questions

• The economical reality will be an even stronger incentive then environmental considerations.
