VIC High Country Trip The Thursday night edition Due to popular demand I will enlighten everyone on the misfortunes of the group that headed away on the Thursday evening. The plan was to head down early to clear and assess the tracks as we knew there had been a lot of rain with the possibility of a reasonable amount of snow. We also knew a few had camper trailers and we wanted to make the trip in as easy as possible. Myself & Bayli, Dan & Rob, Bruce, Rob & Donna were all in Nissan Patrols in various configurations. We left Wagga around 6pm heading for Myrtleford to have dinner at the pub before the fun stuff began, only to discover as we walked in the door at 8.40pm that dinner closes at 8.30pm. We should have known at this point that nothing was going to go our way for the weekend. After some sweet talking we managed to get them to whip up a few bowls of chips and gravy. After fuelling up we made our way to Porepunkah and out onto Buckland Valley Way, stopping to air down at Buckland Bridge and continue on into the long night that followed. We pushed on towards Talbotville coming across our first fallen tree at around 11.30pm, it was already snowing so we got the job done and eagerly moved on as it was getting late and we still had a considerable amount of ground to cover. The snow didn't let up as we continued along our route to camp, getting deeper as we continued to climb in alti-tude. We made our way past Guys Hut where the snow was at its deepest. Elevation was about 1500 metres. The track continued for a few hundred metres before turning right down a steep descent that was a little tricky to traverse with the amount of snow cover. The snow did thin out as we shed some altitude but the track was still a decent drive. After a rapid descent we found ourselves at the Wongungara river at about 2.30am where after assessing, de-cided it was too dangerous to attempt at night and we should double back to somewhere appropriate to camp. We climbed back out to better a position and got some much needed sleep at 4am. We got up early and made our way back to the river to see if it looked any less scary in the daylight. It looked worse, because you could see more. We weighed up the situation and with the thought of driving back up the steep section covered in deep snow near Guys Hut all but impossible, we somehow concluded that it would be worth giving it a shot. We proceeded to set up for the crossing and make our attempt... our attempt failed. Luckily we had straps al-ready rigged to the vehicle and it got pushed around against the bank and the driver safely disembarked. An in-tense 20 minutes followed as we rigged 2 winches to pull it back up and out of the river which was a massive effort. There was a huge sigh of relief when we got the back tyres back onto the track. Now we had a dead car and a nice little hill to get back up. We got the vehicle going again without too much trouble (bloody good those GQ's) and tried to move on but the cv had also snapped in all the commotion, so out came the spare cv and the tool bag and Dan had it sorted in no time. We made our way back along Sarah Spur Track relatively easily, making contact with Steve when we got service to inform him of the situation so they could turn around. As we climbed back towards Guys Hut the snow gradu-ally got deeper again and we started having to winch at about 5 o'clock in the afternoon.

The winching continued long into the night and so did the snow fall. Blizzard of Oz 2.0 was in full swing and stuck on a ridge line at 1300 metres is not where you want to be. Upon trying to get the last vehicle up, the battery died and the winching came to a halt. We decided to leave it behind and head to Porepunkah, this was around 1am. We headed out past Guys Hut continuing on the way we came in before. A small incline started to give us some trouble. Not up for another winching session, we thought we might try a flatter track that seemed to go around the hill on the map. We turned onto it at about 2.30am and although only just over 1km in length, it took 1 hour to travel as we cut our way through the 18 trees over the road. Luckily we were now in the clear and headed for Porepunkah to get some much needed rest and regroup in the morning to go back and recover the stranded vehicle. We rolled into the caravan park at 5am and I think it's safe to say our eyes were shut before they even hit the pillow. The next morning saw us get up around 9am slightly rejuvenated with the task at hand the hot topic, we had to go back and do it all again. We decided to load one vehicle with the camper trailer and any unnecessary gear we did not need and send it homeward. Myself, Bayli, Dan, Rob and Bruce would head back in to recover his vehi-cle. We borrowed some snow chains from Chappy and fuelled up before heading to Bright to get a new battery. We were a bit dubious about the weather forecast but as we made our way in it was sunshine all the way which made for some great photos and made us feel a little more comfortable about what might lay ahead. We passed Guys Hut and parked at the top of the ridge line before walking the descent with snow chains and battery in hand. It was a cold night on the ridge judging by the ice formations on the vehicle. New battery in and snow chains fitted we got it back to the tops in no time. After a little celebration we all felt very relieved that we could now head home. We made it back to Myrtleford in time for dinner this time and after a nice meal we chased some white lines all the way back to Wagga. Although it didn't go exactly to plan it was still a great trip. I'm sure everyone learned a thing or two and some-times stepping out of your comfort zone can be a great learning experience. The lessons you learn can only help you plan and execute any trips into the future even better.

CLUB PERSON OF THE
YEAR AWARD
Each year, members of the Club award a Club Person of the Year Award to recognise outstanding service to the Club.
Criteria: The Club Member of the Year Award will be presented to the person who has made an outstand-ing contribution to the Wagga Wagga Four Wheel Drive Club Inc. during that calendar year.
1. To be considered for such an award, the person must be nominated and seconded, and a brief resume’ submitted as to why they should be entitled to receive such an Award.
2. Nominations are to be received by the Secretary by the last day of October each year.
3. If no nominations are received by the November Club meeting, then the Award will not be presented for that year.
4. Only one Award is to be made per calendar year and presented at the annual Christmas Party and Awards Night.
5. If there is just one nominee, then that nomination will remain confidential until the Award is presented.
6. If there is more than one nominee, then the following procedure is to be followed:
Prior to the November Club meeting, the Secretary is to provide to Club members a collated list of nominees with their nomination resume (but not the nominator or seconder). The documents will be circulated to all club members in confidence similar to the distribution process for Club Meeting Minutes. However, this list will not be published in TrackChat (it is for internal Club consideration on-ly).
Voting is to be by secret ballot using the voting slip provided. Each Club person is entitled to one vote. Voting is not compulsory.
All voting slips must be returned to the Secretary by the November Club meeting. The Secretary and President (Returning Officers) will tally the number of votes for each nominee.
The winner will be that nominee receiving the most number of votes. Should there be a tied vote, the winner will be decided by the Returning Officers by toss of coin.
Should the Secretary or President be nominated for the Award, then they will be ineligible to be a Returning Officer and their position will be taken by another Committee member who has not been nominated for the Award.
All voting slips are to be kept confidential and destroyed after the winner has been decided.
All nominees will receive a Certificate of Appreciation to recognise their contribution to the Club. These will be presented at the Christmas Awards night.
The Award will be a suitably framed Certificate and free membership of the Club for one year. Due acknowledgment will also be made in TrackChat and other media outlets as appropriate.
The winner will have their name recorded on the Club Person of the Year banner and the recipient may hold the banner until November the following year, when it will be returned to the Secretary.
It is important that the selection and award be made without bias or favouritism and in the spirit of recognising outstanding contribution. Individual voting preferences are to remain confidential.
