Last year saw CablePrice continued to focus on engaging with our customers in activities such as the very successful Productivity and Reliability

Road Show that was well-supported and appreciated by our customers. These included a recent John Deere E-series in-forest demonstration in Whangarei, a John Deere 844K wheel loader demonstration in Hamilton and the continued major sponsorship of the NZCF excavator operator competitions for 2012 and 2013.

Midway through 2012 we released the Hitachi ZAXIS-5 range (ZX200LC-5, ZX240LC-5 and ZX350LCH-5). This range of excavators has been very well received by customers with performances above expectation and with strong sales demand. This year will see the range expand further with the release of three additional forestry models to the range. The ZX290L-5 is available now, the ZX250L-5 is due to arrive in April and will be followed by a ZX400L-5 — all with factory-built high and wide chassis.

Missing from our line-up for a number of years was a John Deere dozer with a PTO-driven winch. John Deere, in conjunction with Allied Systems, has recently released a PTO-driven winch option for the popular 750 and 850 J-series dozer, specifically targeted at the forestry industry in which a winch with

hi-pull speed and free spool capabilities. is often what’s required.

We continue to have strong sales across the entire Scania truck range. The new robust 13-litre SCR engine performs extremely well in all applications including logging, milk and line haul with some trucks having travelled more than 200,000km already. Customers are impressed by the exceptional reliability and fuel efficiency of these engines.

By now you will have read about the upcoming event ‘THE EXPO’ at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek event centre in March. This is an industry-specific event taking place

every four years. Events of this nature are an ideal time for us as suppliers to showcase a range of our latest equipment all in one central location.

Not far behind THE EXPO, CablePrice will once again be back at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek for the annual Fieldays, 12-15 June, 2013, now into it’s 45th year and widely regarded as one of the worlds premier agricultural and agribusiness expos. We’ve once again secured the same location on the corner of ‘I Road’ and ‘E Street’, site E105-E107.

So, if you’re at Mystery Creek for either event be sure to stop by and say hello.

CablePrice takes pride in acknowledging those who have achieved long-service milestones. The company’s long-service scheme is designed to recognise those who have 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service, displaying loyalty, dedication, and high levels of performance.

Since the last issue of Track & Wheel, six additional staff members have achieved milestones as part of the company’s scheme of recognising long service.

Congratulations to Malcolm Pascoe from Auckland, for achieving an outstanding milestone of 40 years of service.

Special recognition must also go to Brian Leary from Christchurch, for achieving the milestone of 20 years of service.

CablePrice would like to thank all of its employees for their commitment and loyalty and looks forward to the growing pool of experience in the coming years.

LONG SERvICE AWARDSWelcome to 2013 and our first publication of Track and Wheel for this year. New Zealand

continues to experience the flow-on effects from the global recession of the past few years in what I would describe as an unpredictable market but with many promising signs starting to emerge. Media recently reported both consumers spend and confidence was up approaching Christmas. This came with encouraging signs the housing market is starting to turnaround. While business confidence appeared to fluctuate over the past twelve months, we are starting to see signs that general business confidence may be on the road to recovery. This could be attributed to a number of key driving factors including low interest rates and the strong New Zealand dollar.

Our new head office super-site facility, encompassing our national warehouse and Wellington retail operations in Gracefield, Lower Hutt, is something many have waited a long time for. It is now with a

great sense of pride that we can welcome customers, business partners and visitors to a purpose-built facility that truly reflects the standards and values we hold for our customers and staff. We look forward to this building serving CablePrice for many years to come.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their patience and enduring some rather sub-standard facilities on the journey to where we are today. Despite the upheaval and discomforts, everyone looked to the future and carried on as normal. In addition to these trials, last year has seen CablePrice undergo a number of other changes including some key organisational structural changes. It has not been easy for our staff through this process. The national warehouse also represents the coming together of our Wellington-based facilities with the capability to carry the needs of CablePrice well into the future.

For the better part of last year at CablePrice we focused on strengthening our operational capacity and improving efficiency by investing in this new fit-for-purpose Wellington retail operation and

workshop that is a true representation of the standards CablePrice seeks to deliver to our customers and our staff.

This year will see CablePrice continue its programme of investing in our facilities with the addition of another completely new and purpose-built facility — this time for our Hastings operation. It will include workshop facilities very similar to those of the recently built Wellington workshop, including the provision for sky lifters. This project will run over the next 12 months.

Every two years Scania, Sweden runs a global competition to identify the best of the best. 2012 saw a number of CablePrice staff compete at a national level to find New Zealand’s Scania Top Team. I would like to congratulate this year’s winning team from Whangarei, consisting of technicians Scott Cann (captain), Michael Adams, Gavin Brindle, Shane Parker and John Burhenne (parts). This team will now go on to represent New Zealand later this year in the Scania Regional Semi Finals to be held in either Kuala Lumpa or Thailand. Please join with me in wishing the team good luck at the semi finals representing CablePrice New Zealand.

Taare Black, of CablePrice Hastings, has been honoured with the 2012 Hawke’s Bay Region Motortrade Association Year 1 Apprentice of the Year award. This distinction is judged over all fields in the industry and recognises outstanding contribution as a heavy automotive technician.

From door-knocking for employment to achieving an apprenticeship to completing two CablePrice in-house courses with high marks, Black has proven himself a valuable member of the Hastings branch team.

Joe Gradwell, CablePrice’s Hasting’s branch operations manager, vividly recalls the day he met Black.

“He was on a mission to find an apprenticeship as a heavy automotive technician. We had a discussion about various opportunities available to him within the industry and, in particular, outlined the prerequisites to obtaining an apprenticeship,” says Gradwell. “He needed to have completed a pre-trade automotive course through the local university but as he had not yet done this, it was difficult to offer him a job.”

“Without giving up, he asked if he could at least come in and help out on the weekends as work experience.”

Gradwell agreed and Black promptly took up residence in the workshop. So keen was Black, he would often be sitting at the company gates in the morning, waiting to get work started and at the end of the day, Gradwell had trouble getting him out.

After this initial experience, Black spent 12 months in the New Zealand Navy as a marine technician. He grew out of the job quickly, knowing it wasn’t where he wanted to be.

“I wanted to fix things. I didn’t want to be a parts-fitter,” Black says.

Gradwell knew Black had the kind of positive attitude he needed to be a skilled apprentice. Having gained the required unit standard credits while in the navy, Black was able to convince CablePrice’s national training manager, Ross Wallace, of his competence worthy of an apprenticeship.

Black has now been with the Hastings branch of CablePrice for 20 months and has excelled in this short time. He has carried out two CablePrice in-house courses — CMT2 (basic electrical) and CMT3 (basic brakes). In both of these training courses he received a pass mark of 87% — a great result for someone still in the beginning stages of working with CablePrice products.

The MTA award caps off a stellar year for Black. His achievement is also very rewarding for CablePrice and the Hastings team. It shows the huge commitment and dedication that Black has to his job, his career and his team.

Black is described within his team as a very smart young man who is well-spoken and courteous; one who is growing into a very valuable key member of the truck and bus team in Hastings and consistently going the extra mile every day.

A message from his team at CablePrice Hastings: Well done with your achievements so far, Taare. We look forward to working with you in the future and we wish you every success as you continue in your chosen career.

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR OF MTA’S APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR – HAWKE’S BAY REGION

Since 1995, excavator operators from all over New Zealand have been competing for the title of Operator of the Year. For the past five consecutive years CablePrice (NZ) Ltd and Hitachi, have

been the sole machinery sponsor of the excavator operator competition both at regional and national finals level.

To excel in this very competitive competition, operators need to be

more than just good at their job. Each region has the same set of tasks to complete, all of which are designed to promote safe work practices and increase the skills of excavator operators.

1st: Greg Robinson (Edridge Contracting)2nd: Willie Rashliegh (Taylors Contractors)3rd: Geoff Hocquard (Bryant Earthworks)

I was originally employed in 1969 as a field mechanic and operated from a newly formed branch location at Tokoroa. This was to service the forest industry and the Kinleth paper mill.

After approximately one year I left CablePrice and returned to the family dairy farm in Tolaga Bay, on the East Coast. Dairy farming didn’t prove to be my true vocation, so in 1972 I rejoined the team at CablePrice Corporation in Tokoroa and worked there as a heavy construction field mechanic before progressing to branch service manager.

This Tokoroa operation, along with Taumaranui and Whangarei branches, were casualties of a restructuring of operations in 1978.

I was offered a job as an equipment sales representative at the Auckland branch, then situated at 430 Mount Wellington Highway. I would be responsible for the area north of the harbour bridge to Kaitaia. Quite an onerous job and a major career change

at the time. But with much arm twisting from the then branch manager in Auckland, I accepted the job.

I was selling Hitachi construction machinery, Fiat Allis wheel loaders and crawler tractors, also Tree Farmer log skidders and Mercedes-Benz trucks. As it turned out, this was the start to a long (mostly happy) career in selling.

In 1980 I was offered a transfer to the Nelson branch as sales manager to oversee our equipment operation, which was located in Halifax Street, sharing premises with our then Toyota and Mercedes-Benz automotive franchises.

I was at this time responsible for selling Hitachi construction equipment, Fiat Allis wheel loaders and crawler tractors, Mercedes Benz trucks and fork trucks (Komatsu and Lansing Bagnal).

Once again, in 1989, a restructuring and selling off of the Toyota franchise, all due to a buy out by Briely Investments, resulted in CablePrice becoming part of the Skellerup Group of companies.

I took this opportunity to take a transfer back to Auckland and take up the position as equipment sales rep, responsible for construction equipment sales in South Auckland, Coromandel, and Waikato, including Hamilton. The fork truck side of selling was dropped from my job, as Auckland was then set up with fork truck sales specialists.

In 2005 CablePrice employed a sales representative to concentrate on the greater Hamilton and Western areas, and my sales role remains the same today.

MALCOLM PASCOE - FORTY YEARS OF SERvICE AT CABLEPRICE

I have certainly seen some changes during my 40 years with CablePrice. Ever since the company has been owned by Hitachi it has beeen very stable, with an emphasis on building its strengths towards stability for both staff and the client base.

The Hitachi product has a reputation second to none, and as a sales representative I have total confidence in the product and the ability of our principles to fully back the product. I think it is my passion for these products and the people in the industry that have been a catalyst in the length of the years of employment with CablePrice.

I certainly enjoyed working with the many friends and my colleagues during this time and some of my clients have become personal friends. I am even dealing with second generation owners of businesses as fathers hand control over to their sons.

This has been an enjoyable journey spanning 40 years working in the CablePrice family.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank all my clients who have been so loyal to me and CablePrice — thank you.

Operators need to show their understanding of all regulations related to first aid, identifying hazards, Land Transport regulations and occupational safety and health — and that’s all before they’ve even reached the operating section of the event.

The real fun, for the audience especially, begins when the operators are given a 12 tonne Hitachi excavator and asked to manoeuvre it through an obstacle course while completing tasks that demonstrate the skills required to be New Zealand’s next top excavator operator.

The 2012/13 competition started in June 2012 at the National Field Days event at Mystery Creek, Hamilton and by the end of 2012, regional rounds had been completed in Marlborough, Napier, Canterbury, Auckland, Whangarei and Otago. The remaining rounds for the 2012/13 are in Upper Hutt on 23 February, 2013, Manawatu on 24 February and the national finals to be held at Central District Field Days at Manfield in Fielding on 7-9 March.

In November 2012 CablePrice officially opened their brand new, purpose-built head office and workshop facility situated in Bell Road South, Gracefield, Lower Hutt. CablePrice originated in 1951 in Wellington when William Cable Limited and A & G Price merged their merchandising business. Hitachi Construction Machinery then bought CablePrice in 1996.

CablePrice, a subsidiary of Japanese construction machinery-maker Hitachi, has invested approximately $10m into the Lower Hutt facility which was opened by Hitachi Construction Machinery managing director, Mr Michijiro Kikawa who flew out from Japan for the occasion and was joined by Lower Hutt mayor Mr Ray Wallace. A Maori welcome was performed in front of Mr Michijiro Kikawa by members of the local Waiwhetu marae in front of a big crowd

of staff and onlookers followed by a traditional blessing of the building.

The new 1.3 hectare site at Gracefield includes 1600 square-metres of head office space, a 1750 square-metre workshop, 4500 square-metres of warehousing space and the national parts distribution centre.

The new building is significantly larger than the previous Tunnel Grove facility with a greater capacity for trucks, five full-length, 32 metre-long bays and two specialist construction and forestry equipment bays.

The head office facility includes a purpose-built theory training room with a fully-operational workshop where technicians can be trained with the latest tools to a world-class level.

Pat Ward, chief financial officer for CablePrice, says the new head office combines the company’s operations,

which were previously spread across several sites.

“In a time when many businesses are either downsizing or relocating to other regions, CablePrice is proud to

show its continued commitment to its customers and the Wellington region. The new head office marks a major milestone for CablePrice, which in 2011 celebrated 60 years of supporting businesses in New Zealand,” he says.

“We’re focusing on strong after-sales activity through the ongoing roll-out of well-trained and resourced staff operating in modern facilities.”

CablePrice was encouraged by the opportunities in key sectors such as mining and construction, with the Christchurch rebuild obviously a key priority, says Ward.

“CablePrice has been working hard in Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region as we look to meet the significant demand for demolition equipment, such as specialist excavators,” he adds.

“We anticipate strong growth from the rebuild, particularly as it gathers pace over the next 12 months. CablePrice recently sold large crawler cranes to operators in Christchurch.

“CablePrice is an effective barometer for the health of key sectors such as construction and mining and our own recent sales reflect growing confidence in these critical areas of the economy.”

Following the speeches and formalities, guests and staff alike were invited to enjoy a relaxing afternoon with light refreshments, live jazz music, a hands on Midori Sushi demonstration and tasting, and tours of the new facilities.

HEAD OFFICE OPENING

The New Zealand finalists for the 2012 Scania Top Team competition have been announced, with team Whangarei reigning victorious after the regional finals were held in Wellington on Saturday, 1 September, 2012.

The New Zealand round of Scania Top Team was open to all CablePrice branches and the rules for assembling a team were quite simple — get together four service technicians and one parts specialist. Semi-finals were run in August where nine teams, totalling 45 competitors, worked on two sets of theory-based questions, with 50 multiple choice questions in each. Teams were able to research these in their respective branch locations, answer and send their work to the training department for marking. From these two rounds, the numbers were whittled down to the top four teams in the country.

The final of the Scania Top Team competition saw Scott Cann (captain), Michael Adams, Gavin Brindle, Shane Parker and John Burhenne (parts) pitted against three other teams (two from Christchurch and one from Auckland) in five 20-minute rounds, working in their teams to solve complex problems. The pressure was intense; one small mistake could cost a team a lot of time and valuable points.

Ross Wallace, national training manager at CablePrice says he’s impressed with the level of talent in such young finalists.

“What’s exceptional is when you look at the make-up of Scott’s team, you have Michael, who’s only been with CablePrice for two years, Shane, who’s just finished his apprenticeship and Gavin, who up until recently was an automotive technician.

“Such a youthful team getting into the finals of New Zealand Scania Top Team is an enormous achievement in anyone’s books, let alone taking out first place.”

Team Whangarei now has the opportunity to represent New Zealand in the Scania regional semi-finals this year in either Kuala Lumpur or Thailand.

The world’s largest MINExpo dedicated entirely to the mining industry was held from 24 – 26 September last year, at the Las Vegas Convention Centre in Nevada, USA. It was the first time this MINExpo had been held since 2008. The Expo represented products from over 100 countries, was spread over 12 halls occupying a total of 850,000 square-feet of exhibition space and attracted more than 50,000 visitors. Amongst the huge number of visitors was CablePrice’s mining product manager, Paul Laird who hosted three CablePrice customers on the week-long trip — five days of which were spent in Las Vegas.

Paul’s account of MINExpo

Given the physical size of our mining products, it’s logistically impossible to bring gear of this size to New Zealand

to showcase to our customers, so the next best thing is to take the customer to the gear — and that’s exactly what we did. This trip was all about showing what new innovations Hitachi has on offer, along with the latest state-of-the-art technology Hitachi is launching.

Highlights of the show would have to be the massive Hitachi EX5600-6 560 tonne face shovel and the Hitachi EH5000 AC3 haul truck with its new sky camera system. Haul trucks are notorious for blind spots, so the new sky camera Hitachi has developed gives the driver a bird’s eye view around the truck and will help overcome any blind spots. It also gives the ability to detect objects within a metre of the machine perimeter.

The group also spent time at the Scania Trucks stand where the new specialised Scania 5-Axle, 10x4*6 haul truck with an Alison transmission was on display.

This particular combination offers a 45 tonne payload. This new range of Scania haul truck offers a mix of great fuel economy and high payloads along with Scania’s ability to adapt truck specifications to the requirements of an individual mine, thanks to its well-proven modular system. This is just one more tool in the selection that CablePrice is able to offer to mining in New Zealand.

If I had to summarise the MINExpo, three words would come to mind – ‘ridiculously huge’ and ‘unreal’. If you’re in the mining industry then all I can say is this is a‘must do’ event and I’m sure that the next one — in 2016 — will be bigger and better. It’s a lot to take in in three days, but given the event was so well-run, I’ve had nothing but positive feedback from our customers who, like me, were blown away by its size and scale.

WORLD’S LARGEST 2012 MINExPO HELD IN uSA

Whitford Park Golf Club (WPGC) once again hosted the CablePrice (CPL) Auckland Customer Golf Day held on 30 November, 2012 and despite the initial light rain and relentless wind, 72 golfers braved the elements and enjoyed a challenging round of golf. Thankfully the rain stopped soon after tee off and the sun came out, which enabled guests to dry out and enjoy the day.

Following registrations and the consumption of hundreds of sausages, competitors carried, dragged or wheeled

their bags across WPGC to their starting tees for a stableford-based, 18-hole tournament. Rounding out the day was dinner and light refreshments in the club house along with prize giving.

This year’s top spot was taken out by Sailesh Abernethy with his amazing 39 stableford points. He went home with a $1000 travel voucher and the prized CablePrice Classic Cup. The remaining golfers who stayed around the club house for the awards ceremony and dinner collected thousands of dollars

worth of additionally-sponsored prizes for a variety of awards, thanks to the generous sponsorship of a large number of suppliers, and CablePrice.

Speaking during the awards ceremony, CPL Auckland’s commercial vehicle salesman, Simon Leary, said it was great to see our staff, customers and suppliers all come along and thanked the customers for the support they render to the business, saying this event is always a pleasure to hold.

CABLEPRICE GOLF DAY

uPDATE ON PARTS DISMANTLING‘First choice’ is the mission statement

adopted by CablePrice and, more specifically, ‘First choice as a supplier to our customers’. CablePrice endeavours to be the preferred supplier of new, genuine Hitachi, Scania and John Deere parts, with exceptional service to match. Building from this, CablePrice now offers the same service in its second hand parts department based in Christchurch.

Currently, there have been eight various Scania 4 and PR series trucks

and a Hitachi ZX160 excavator that have been dismantled. By having a fully-qualified Scania and Hitachi-trained diesel mechanic on-board, it is able to thoroughly oversee and rebuild, if necessary, any component that leaves the department before sale. In addition to this, it also supplies a 3 month warranty on all major components.

With the demand for second hand parts continuing to increase, CablePrice’s second hand parts department will only

expand and its stock will increase. With its excellent service remaining a constant, it will ensure it continues to be your ‘First Choice’ for second hand parts.

As CablePrice starts to increase its stock, it will be looking to purchase used vehicles and equipment. If you are interested in updating, CablePrice may be interested in purchasing.

When Thomas Helin has parked his 1:1 scale Scania truck after a working day, numerous hours of work still lay ahead on one of Scania’s 1:14 scale trucks.

With five different radio-controlled models under construction, his hobby is not only time-consuming but also expensive. The reward is to exhibit the unique model to an admiring public after months of hard, detail-intensive work.

“It’s supposed to be a hobby and sometimes you have to step back a little bit,” he says. “You can’t work on it round-the-clock, even though it tends to result in all-nighters before exhibitions.”

Helin belongs to a small group of enthusiasts in Sweden who build radio-controlled trucks, Scania models in particular. Not only because they like the make but also because Scania parts are the most common on the market. In most cases, the builders start with Japanese-based Tamiya’s two construction kits for the R 470 4x2 and R 620 6x4 Highline models. But at times, several construction sets are needed to create the truck they have in mind.

“The gearbox and the rear axles come in separate parts and must be assembled. If the smallest gear wheel is incorrectly assembled, the truck can’t be operated,” he says.

However, the Tamiya construction kit is only the beginning of an ongoing process. In order to achieve the desired effect, it’s not unusual for the engine to be replaced with a better one or the hi-fi system needing to stay in the box in favour of a sharper sound system.

Helin’s largest ongoing project is to build an exact replica of the Greater Stockholm recovery service truck 186 with functioning hydraulics. He has measured the original on three occasions in order to ensure that every detail is correct. The project has now been underway for more than 18-months and he no longer dares to say when it will be finished.

“I chose the truck because I think it is very elegant and I have good contacts with heavy-recovery truck drivers,” he says.

This small group of radio-controlled truck builders maintains online contact but also meets occasionally at exhibitions. They exchange experiences and also share special tools in order to keep costs down. Rolle Parmfelt, who recently sold his company – including three trucks – reveals that his red Scania, featuring an impressive set of lights, cost 40,000-krona, of which 30,000-krona was spent just upgrading the original model. Håkan Eriksson, who is building a crane and swap-body, is up to about 60,000-krona of which 45,000-krona relates to hydraulics.

A small group of Swedish enthusiasts are spending innumerable hours and a good deal of money on building radio-controlled

Scania models. These remarkable miniatures reflect the precision and high quality of the originals.

Truck builders

on a 1:14 scale

Doing it right takes time. For Tobias Ericsson, who works mainly with tightening technology in engine assembly at DynaMate, it took three-years to complete his first truck. Now he has two trucks with trailers and is especially proud of his scale-model DynaMate trailer, which was built from a refrigerated trailer.

“I have also built my own radio transmitter, with two transmitters in one, in order to individually control functions such as high-beam and dipped headlights,” he says.

“It doesn’t hurt to know quite a bit about electronics when you build models.”

The radio-controlled trucks can be driven at up to 27km/h but hardly anybody would risk such a speed. After all the work they have put in, nobody wants to do any damage.

“The incentive is the satisfaction of finishing the models, not being able to drive them later,” says Ericsson.

Electrician Torbjörn Schöld from Avesta is the odd man out in the 1:14 gang. He works with quarter scale, 1:4 models – solid vehicles which are often manufactured on order by companies. Although, of course, he shares an eye for details with his model-building companions.

“I’ll wind down my work as an electrician when I reach retirement age and will then be able to devote even more time to this,” he says.

VER THE PAST few decades, Hitachi has revolutionised the mining industry through the design and manufacture of world-class technology across its mining product range. Successfully launched in over ten countries, the introduction of Hitachi’s rear dump truck is based on the generic design of the iconic ‘Euclid’ product

that pioneered the use of rigid dump trucks in global mining and major construction projects. In alignment with Hitachi’s philosophy of quality, the same quality that has developed its leading hydraulic excavator range, has now been integrated into its dump trucks to form the highest quality product with state-of-the-art technology.

Revolutionary Hitachi EH3500ACII and EH4000ACII dump trucks

Designed and manufactured in the same world-class factory as the renowned EX Series hydraulic excavators, the EH3500ACII and EH4000ACII dump trucks incorporate the latest in innovative engineering to ultimately enhance production capabilities. Featuring lightweight, specifically-designed bodies to maximise payload capabilities, Hitachi dump trucks continue to deliver superior performance to mining operators.

The EH3500ACII and EH4000ACII dump trucks incorporate Hitachi-engineered AC Drive system technology, developed by Hitachi in 1992 and currently utilised in the Japanese Shinkansen bullet trains. This advanced technology has created superior hauling capabilities that are well recognised among Hitachi products in the mining industry.

The AC Drive technology provides unparalleled performance featuring greater truck availability, improved gradeability, and increased travel speeds, as well as significant reductions in maintenance and operating costs. Operators will benefit from enhanced productivity and lower cost-per-tonne, resulting in a higher return on investment.

high-powered Cummins engine drives performance of Hitachi’s dump trucks. The EH3500ACII boasts a Cummins QSKTA50-CE engine with 1491kW and the EH4000ACII, a Cummins QSKTA60-CE engine with an impressive 1864kW. As you’d expect, combined with Hitachi technology, the engine delivers exceptional reliability and reduced fuel consumption to ensure maximum performance.

CablePrice NZ, John Deere USA and Allied Systems Company (engineering manufacturer of heavy lift and material handling equipment) are pleased to announce the world’s first John Deere 850J dozer with a PTO (Power Take Off)-driven, read-mounted Allied W6F fairlead towing winch.

Long time John Deere dozer owners and CablePrice customers, Grant and Kere Elliot of Elliot Logging in the Hawke’s Bay, recently took delivery of the first 850J dozer, with the winch and log arch.

Elliot knew exactly what he required in a dozer, and what to expect, having previously owned an 850C purchased from CablePrice back in 2002 – a unit that’s still going strong today. Knowledgeable people will tell you the 850C dozer has good, strong power and a fast line speed from the Allied PTO winch so whatever was going to be replacing it had big shoes to fill. In 2009 with Elliot having had such a good run with his 850C, and being a strong believer in the John Deere product, he thought it was about time he started looking for a replacement but unfortunately John Deere had stopped using PTO-driven winches. At the time all that was available were hydraulic winches. There were two distinct disadvantages in the hydraulic winch. While it is great for smooth speed control for something like a recovery application, the line speed is too slow when compared to that of the 850C (the old C-series pulled 30m of rope in 30 seconds where the hydraulic version took 1min 35sec). Added to this, there is no free spool. Again while a controlled line-out speed is not an issue, maybe even an advantage in some instances, in others it just didn’t work for the type of logging work Elliot Logging was doing. Having to power out each time just didn’t cut it for Elliot nor did the free spooling

drum without a brake.Paul Roche, equipment sales specialist for CablePrice Hastings

and never one to give up easily, took the matter up with John Deere USA. While John Deere has an excellent dozer, the lack of a good PTO-driven winch limited their suitability for New Zealand forestry contractors.

Thanks to excellent consultation and cooperation between CablePrice, John Deere Engineering and Allied Systems Company the PTO-driven W6F winch is now available for the current 750 and 850J series dozers. The PTO delivers all the available engine horsepower to the winch for high line pull and fast line speed. This is especially welcome news for forestry customers throughout the country where both high line pull and fast line speed are required for efficient productivity.

Elliot has since put the new dozer to work in the Putere Forest, inland from Raupunga on the east coast of the North Island, pulling 10 to 15 tonne logs and stems; he says the line speed is excellent and back up to that of the old 850C. Combined with a heap of pulling power, it’s doing exactly what’s needed.

“John Deere has hit the nail on the head. It just keeps getting better. The dozer and winch combination has delivered everything the customer had hoped for. It just has great performance in every aspect,” says Roche.

Elliot’s 850J came with a factory-fitted John Deere guarding package, including full-length rock guards, arched limb risers and a heavy-duty grill. Power is by way of a John Deere PowerTech 6.8 litre, tier-2-compliant engine, rated at 157hp (117Kw). To help keep the operator warm in the winter and cool on those famous Hawke’s Bay summer days, a roof-mounted heater and air conditioning unit is also included. Other creature

comforts include an air-suspension, deluxe-comfort control, high-back operations seat, AM/FM radio and 12 volt power port all wrapped up in a ROPS (Roll Over Protection Structure) approved cab. These, combined with the fully-modulated, hydrostatic drive-train, provide a smooth ride, virtually eliminating jerky or abrupt movements. This makes the long hours in the driving seat comfortable.

Both 750J and 850J dozers are also available with a PowerTech 9 litre, tier-3-compliant engine, rated at 192hp (143Kw). John Deere dozer owners now have the choice of an Allied H6H hydraulic winch for general applications where smooth line speed control is important or the Allied W6F PTO-driven winch for fast line speed especially suited for high-volume logging.

Reliability and durability are major considerations in any form of heavy transport but, in groundspreading, the demands on equipment are huge, so having the right equipment is vital.

Since purchasing its first Scania spreader back in 2007, Mainland Groundspread Services in

Oamaru haven’t regretted their decision in the slightest.Company owner John Schultz says it was a case of trialing

a Scania in the fleet and evaluating its performance and, as a result, more of the Swedish manufacturer’s trucks were purchased and added to the fleet.

“We looked around and basically just fell into the Scanias,” Schultz says. “We had the choice of a couple of brands so took a look at Scania. The first one was so successful for us that we’ve never looked back and driver acceptance of them has been bloody good too.”

The company now has four Scanias in its fleet — two P340 4x4 and two P360 4x4 models, with a P400 6x6 on order and not far from delivery. The six-wheeler, ordered with the higher GCM and towing capacity in mind, will be based in Timaru.

The 4x4 models are designed to tackle some of the tough, demanding terrain that groundspreading brings and will be based at the company’s main depot in Oamaru. However, all models still need to be capable of hauling a trailer-load of product when required.

“We want to be able to pull trailers with all our spreaders and we went for a European brand, instead of a Japanese brand, for this reason,”Schultz says.

“We needed something pretty heavy-duty. Spreading is really hard on gear — it’s a hard, hard industry for trucks.

“We expect our trucks to last at least eight seasons so they need to be pretty robust to survive what we demand of them.”

In addition to the rugged territory on the south Canterbury and north Otago farms serviced by the company, the nature of the fertiliser and other products means the equipment can also suffer quite badly from deterioration.

“The gear needs to be able to handle the work and the corrosion, which mainly affects the electrics and the sensors.”

He says the electrical issues were something that had affected their previous trucks, but haven’t plagued the Scanias at all.

In addition to the Scanias, the company has a couple of other European models in its fleet but, for various reasons, Schultz decided to look further afield when replacing existing trucks.

that far on a job, but if they’re not working they’re not earning, so it just makes sense for us to get them serviced here.”

The company covers a considerable area from its Oamaru base, servicing a zone within a 150km radius of the depot.

“It’s a pretty big area, so we need to make sure our trucks are reliable,” Schultz says.

Even during the middle of winter, when groundspreading operations traditionally slow up, the company manages to keep its trucks busy, converting two of them to spray units for applying a nitrogen inhibitor on pastures.

“With spraying, it gives us something to do to keep the trucks busy, so we really only have a four-week slow down in the middle of winter,” says Schultz.

While performance, return-on-investment and reliability all play key roles in his assessment of the trucks, Schultz points out the guys behind the wheel have also given favourable feedback on selecting the Scania brand.

“Driver acceptance of them has been really good,” he says. After 13 years of operating Mainland Groundspread Services,

Schultz and his wife Nivonne have established their business based on strong performance and good reliability — attributes that are highly regarded by its South Canterbury and North Otago farming clients.

In their Scania spreaders, they’ve got equipment that is delivering the same sort of positive benefits, and that’s something that can only be good for business.

“The cost of operation was so far down [on what they were used to] that we made a decision to stick with them [Scania]…and we’ve had a bloody good run out of them,” Schultz says.

To reinforce his comment, Schultz points out that the back-up service from CablePrice service dealer, Cooke Howlison in Dunedin is almost an unknown factor.

“We’ve never had a problem with our back-up service because we’ve never needed it,” he says. “They’ve been that bloody reliable, it’s never been a problem.”

In fact, he points out, the only time the trucks have needed to visit Howlison’s Dunedin workshop has been to have their first couple of scheduled services. After that, Mainland Groundspread gets the servicing done by a local business in Oamaru, although Schultz states that’s more about downtime and logistics than anything else.

“Dunedin’s an hour-and-a-half away, and that’s a long way on tractor-grip tyres,” he says. “That’s also time the trucks aren’t working. It would be different if we were getting paid to travel

Auckland contractors March Cato have added a hard-working ZAXIS-5 medium excavator to their growing fleet, reflecting the varied nature of their constantly expanding project work.

Since its formation in 1997 March Cato has earned a solid reputation as a leading civil engineering and infrastructure company. Specialising in tunnelling, public drainage, pipe-jacking and sheet-piling in often restrictive urban environments, the company currently

has 14 excavators in its fleet covering a variety of projects and applications.

It was taking a well-earned break the day we called in to check out March Cato’s new ZAXIS 240LC-5 excavator, but as project manager Nicholas Gulley attests to, it’s been working the hard yards since coming on-line.

“This is the third new Hitachi we’ve brought in for this job,” he says. “It’s a big project and it required all hands on deck before the Christmas break. It’s definitely the exception to the rule to have it sitting still right now!”

Since launching the comprehensive ZAXIS-5 series at National Fieldays in June last year, CablePrice has been placing ‘dash five’ variants with new owners throughout the country. In addition to heavy duty H-Series and demolition-orientated K-Series machines, the ZX-5 medium excavator range – of which March Cato’s ZX240LC-5 is the midway point between the ZX200LC-5 and ZX350LCH-5 – has already received a multitude of owner and operator praise.

“We’ve been buying Hitachi equipment since we formed March Cato 16 years ago,” says company co-owner and director Dick March. “Adam Cato [March Cato co-owner and fellow director] and I still like to know everything we can about the equipment we buy.”

“The last couple of years in particular have been exceptionally busy for us,” says March. “We’re running a variety of machines from 1.5-tonne up to 45-tonne, and that’s purely a reflection of the varied scale of the work we’re doing.

“We’re at the stage now where we came directly to CablePrice to get this latest round of machines. We knew what we wanted straight away, so there wasn’t any point going anywhere else,” he says.

The nature of many March Cato worksites means that excavators that work well in confined spaces are ideal. Overall ZAXIS-5 excavators have already been widely praised for their efficient hydraulics systems and precise operating abilities. While ZX240LC-5s’ are classed

as medium-sized machines with overall widths registering between 3190mm and 3490mm, this hardy unit can still easily access and work in narrow spots on-site.

Such tight conditions suit the new ZAXIS-5 range though, boasting, as they do, excellent outward visibility, thanks to a new compact console (which also gives the operator more legroom) and the door pillar having been shifted rearward by 70mm, meaning lateral vision for the operator has improved too.

The cab is all about user comfort in the ZAXIS-5s. A new LED light turns on when the door opens; handy for those winter morning starts. The front window is easily removed and stored overhead using clever slide rails and the overhead window can be opened up for extra ventilation, although Hitachi has increased the air vent count in the cab, strategically-placed for uniform air circulation even in the height of a Kiwi summer.

As Dick March would also acknowledge, the degree of comfort a decently spec’d, consistently reliable machine adds to any project’s bottom line can’t be ignored either.

The new generation ZAXIS models boast lower lifecycle maintenance costs, with lubricant requirements down to 500 hours for connections like the bucket and boom foot, and consumables like engine and hydraulic oils only needing to be refreshed after around 5000 hours.

“We’ve always found Hitachi excavators to be very good machines,” March concludes. “They’re very reliable overall.”

With the improved ZX240LC-5 and its ‘dash five’ counterparts finding homes on a multitude of job sites around the country, that’s an opinion set to be echoed throughout New Zealand’s hardworking construction industry during 2013.

As most transport operators know, logging is a tough business. In fact, in the New Zealand transport industry, there are few applications more demanding on gear than hauling logs.

Operator of Marsden Transport Solutions, Glen Curran, who owns the business with his

wife Suzie, knows he needs the right equipment to keep his business ticking over efficiently — a business that is built on smart decisions as well as durable equipment. There are seven Scanias already in the eleven-strong Whangarei-based MTS fleet — one R500, three R560s and three R620 models. All have been purchased through the Whangarei branch of CablePrice. Now-retired rep, David ‘Smithy’ Smith sold the original five to Curran and Mark Nurse is now MTS’s contact for the remaining trucks. Curran has also ordered a fourth R560 through Nurse, expected to be on the road in early 2013, indicating just how much he respects the Swedish brand.

“We’re pretty happy with them all right,” he says. “They’ve been pretty good for us.

“Logging’s a tough business. It’s all about having the right gear and it needs to be reliable and be able to handle the knocks.”

All the MTS trucks are fitted with trailers and bolsters from Patchell Industries in Rotorua, including one of the most impressive combinations in the fleet — an eight-wheeler truck coupled to a four-axle Patchells trailer, hauling 20m poles for local merchant, Croft’s Poles.

The R560 produces 2700Nm at 1000-1400rpm from its Euro-5-compliant 16 litre V8 engine — more than enough to haul the awkwardly long load.“There aren’t that many trucks up here that can cart that length of timber,” Curran says.

Riding on hub-reduction axles and fitted with an integrated retarder and exhaust brake, the trucks work in a ‘convertible’ capacity, hauling normal-sized packs of logs when not being used for carting poles.

When hauling the long timber, the telescoping drawbar slides out, the rear bolster on the trailer is folded flat and the

stanchions of the front bolster on the truck folded down. The remaining bolsters on both the truck and trailer are then slid into position for loading, using air-rams to move them along slides on the chassis.

To convert it back again, those bolsters are moved, the other bolsters are lifted up and the drawbar telescopes in to form a standard eight-wheeler truck and four-axle trailer.

The remainder of the fleet – which can rise to as many as 25 trucks per day with contracted owner-drivers called in — tends to run to the local port in single-driver shifts, almost always running close to the 44 tonne legal maximum on delivery trips.

“The port does reasonable hours, so we don’t need to double-shift the trucks,” says Curran.

“We’re mostly running loaded one way — about 75% of the time. Occasionally we’ll pick up something to take back.”

The trucks travel, on average, between 500km and 600km per day, five days a week with all returning fuel economy figures over 2km/litre — one of the reasons Curran has chosen the majority of his Scanias in the 560-620hp bracket.

“We went for the higher horsepower for better fuel economy and because it’s also easier on the driver at the end of the day.”

Drivers are an area of the MTS business that is important to Curran — not just for the way they manage their workload, but also for the way they look after the equipment.

“You tend to attract a better class of driver having gear like this, and if you get a good driver, you know they’re going to look after the trucks,” he says.

Curran has also worked servicing and routine R&M of the MTS Scanias into his business budget by using CablePrice’s six year Scanplan Max 24 servicing contract.

“They’re all on this plan, which is the biggest you can get,” he explains. “We own the trucks, but we pay per kilometer for servicing. It’s a great way to budget because it’s a fixed price and cost for each truck and there are no surprises.”

This is important as unwanted surprises aren’t welcome in the logging game — it’s a tough enough job as it is.

In the last issue of Track & Wheel (Winter 2012) we reported on the first ZX-5s landing on Kiwi soil and new owners being impressed with Hitachi’s latest addition to the range.

Six months on we’ve had a chance to catch up with an operator who has been able to put his new ‘dash five’

through its paces. As we discovered, there wouldn’t be many in the King Country earthworks industry with minerals in their veins quite like Ruakuri Contracting’s Warren Holden.

“My family owns the land Ruakuri Cave at Waitomo is on – that’s where the company gets its name,” he says.

The famous subterranean cave structure, complete with glow worms, crystal formations and rumbling underground waterfalls,

is host to New Zealand’s longest guided underground walking tour. Although, operating a lime quarry works as he does, for much of the working week Warren is more concerned with the stuff lying closer to the surface than what rests far beneath.

As far as hardware for the job goes, he’s supremely happy with his new ZAXIS 350LCH-5; so much so that he brought it in to replace a smaller ZX330-3 that had only done 2000 hours before he decided to trade up.

“I was really impressed with the ‘dash three’ actually; we could have soldiered on with it without any worries at all. But I guess it’s a reflection of how good the ‘dash five’ is that we decided to let the smaller machine go so soon into its run,” he says.

“Usually I’d let a machine run to around the 8000-9000 hour

Following on from its debut in mid-2012, we catch up with one early ZAXIS-5 customer to see how this new heavy-duty Hitachi is performing in the rough stuff.

mark before selling it on, but when the ‘dash five’ came out it looked really good on paper. David Neilson at CablePrice in Hamilton made a strong argument for bringing it in, so we did.”

The ZAXIS-5 excavators have already been widely praised for their efficient hydraulics systems and precise operating abilities, along with practical touches like the new service bay doors on the engine compartment that allow more airflow. The cab has been enhanced with ROPS and OPG Level II front and top guards as standard, clearer entry and exit around the repositioned door pillar and a larger monitor display that shows both the main operation functions and the rear view camera at the same time.

Warren spec’d his machine with a short dipper arm allowing for more weight and a long undercarriage. The heavy-duty nature of Warren’s operation means ZX350 ‘H’ model standard features like its strengthened front attachments and track frames, guarding and breaker piping, reinforced idler bracket and full-length track guards are all welcome additions.

“It’s our main production machine on-site, so we need it to be fast and consistent. Just stepping up to the heavier counterweight of the 350 [6900kg versus the 6350kg the ZX330 boasts] has made a huge difference for us.”

Inside the cab, Warren’s Te Kuiti-based machine is stock, but he praises the ZAXIS’ easy concessions to operator comfort.

“There’s so much room in the cab and the air suspension on the seat is great,” he says. “The climate control works well too.”

But Warren saves his biggest thumbs-up for CablePrice’s Hamilton service team, who have already provided exceptional after sales support in the relatively short time he has been operating the new machine.

“David Neilson and his team have been utterly superb. I can’t recommend them highly enough,” he enthuses.

“The mechanics come down to us from Hamilton for servicing and they always schedule in either first thing in the morning or

after the work site has closed down for the day.“It might sound like a small thing but they really make the

effort in that regard; especially when you consider they need to travel a bit to get to us. Coming in outside of normal work hours means we lose very little operating time as a result. That suits me down to the ground.”

Despite the ZAXIS-5’s grunt, this range of machines actually boasts a five percent reduction in fuel consumption and the addition of an ECO mode which can cut fuel consumption by a further nine percent when compared to the PWR mode; out-of-the-box traits which appeal to Warren.

In 2010 Ruakuri Contracting humbled some of the industry’s biggest players by taking out the transport category in that year’s annual Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) Awards. The silverware came Ruakuri’s way in recognition of the company’s concerted efforts to reduce its environmental impact; cutting its fuel usage by 13 percent, displacing over 90,000 litres of diesel with biodiesel and reducing its CO2 emissions by more than 140 tonnes within three years – all in all, a massive effort for a small company.

With biodiesel prices becoming more volatile in the intervening couple of years though, Warren now puts outright fuel efficiency ahead of any other alternative fix.

“It’s just not economically viable anymore to buy biodiesel like we were a few years back, so running an excavator with better fuel efficiency is more important than ever. The ‘dash five’ has already proved its worth on that score.”

There’s plenty to like about the new ZAXIS-5; early interest turns swiftly into positive operator experiences. The heart of the King Country already hosts one satisfied customer, with many more already following Ruakuri Contracting’s lead nationwide.

Milk

Compared to some of the larger operations of their type, Southern Milk Transport may not have a huge fleet, but that doesn’t mean their one hundred dairy farmer customers are any less important to them.

Southern Milk is the transport operation for Open Country Dairy’s Awarua site 10 minutes south of Invercargill – the world’s southern-most whole-milk powder plant – and works some of the toughest, most demanding areas of the country, 24 hours a day, seven-days a week.

“Basically, draw a line from Dunedin across to Blackmount (near Te Anau) and we cover everything below that,” says Southern Milk’s Brett Hamilton.

The operation has been running a Scania R480, now into its second season, the performance of which was instrumental to Hamilton adding two new P440 8x4 Scanias into the seven-strong SMT fleet – a move, he says, that is paying off in fuel

economy, performance and additional milk payload.“Scania have proven themselves in the industry time and

time again,” he says. “They’re known for their fuel efficiency and robustness. The R480 has done more than 500,000 kilometres and we haven’t had an issue with it.”

The Southern Milk fleet completes around 45,000km a week with trucks rotated through a three-driver shift to ensure round-the-clock operations. Hamilton says the Scanias compare favourably with the other European trucks in the fleet, in power and fuel economy especially.

“The 440 produces 2300Nm of torque, so it’s one of the most powerful trucks in our fleet,” he says.

“The fuel economy we’re achieving is really good too. We’re managing to get an average of 2.2 kilometres per litre out of them, which is pretty satisfying.

“We’re really pleased with the fuel consumption – it’s spot on.”Those fuel economy figures have been assisted by the

addition of Scania’s Opticruise 14-speed, two-pedal gearshift system, which has been specified by Hamilton as much due to the three-driver rotation per truck as anything else.

“You just can’t go past it in an operation like ours,” he says. “We’ve got three drivers in these trucks per day and it’s a forgiving system for them to use. It’s proven itself and it’s great.”

The gearbox is shackled to a set of hub-reduction rear axles riding below air-suspension and is fitted with EBS-enabled, full-air disc brakes. “The hub reduction axles take our GCM from 60,000kg to 100,000kg and they also give us a bit more ground clearance,” Hamilton explains.

The marrying of hub-reduction axles and disc brakes provides a weight saving as well as offering the safety of EBS brakes.

“They’re going to provide us with more reliability,” he adds. With the rear axles providing a weight saving, even more has

been trimmed off the tare figure with the choice of cab; the CP14 low-roof day cab sitting on mechanical suspension.

“The drivers really like them. Everything is right at their fingertips and we don’t need a big cab because the drivers really only take their day bag with them and there’s ample room enough for them in there.”

Hamilton explains that the cabs aren’t only spacious enough for the drivers, but the low, easy access they provide is great for the regular entry and exit from the cab for the company’s drivers as they frequently stop at various farms around the area.

“It’s a real health and safety thing for us…[it seems]they’re built especially for our operation,” he says.

“The smaller cabs have also allowed us to get our tare weight down, which is something we have been concentrating on,” Hamilton explains.

The trucks have a tare weight of 10,900kg, which he points out is considerably less than other similarly-spec’d trucks doing the same job. This allows each of the Scanias to haul between 500 and 800 litres more milk per trip than other trucks.

“That really adds up over a week,” he says.Hamilton also mentions the trucks’ halogen H4 headlights as

being something the drivers have commented on.“They all praise the headlights; I’ve driven the trucks a couple

of times and they’re really good.”While the Scanias in the Southern Milk Transport fleet are

performing well and generating returns in line with projections, a transport operation can quickly face difficulties if the manufacturer’s back-up service is below par, but this is another area where Hamilton says Southern Milk’s Scanias have huge benefits being serviced and having the after-sales support of CablePrice’s Invercargill operation.

“We’re working right down at the bottom of the island, so you’ve got to have the product support available if and when you need it,” he says.

“Working under the big umbrella like they do, we know there’s going to be no shortage of parts on the shelf if we need them which means our trucks will be back on the road much quicker should anything happen.”

Open Country Dairy may not be the largest company of its type in the country, nor the Southern Milk Transport fleet the largest but, for its customers, knowing the tankers are going to turn up every day is a vital part of their operation.

With Scania and CablePrice, Southern Milk Transport achieves those aims daily – at a reduced cost and with better returns.

We’re working right down at the bottom of the island, so you’ve got to have the product support available if you need it.

Customer: Sid and Ian Taylor Model: Hitachi ZX240LC-5Sid and Ian Taylor standing by their new Hitachi ZX240LC-5. Ian and Sid own a large property at Mossburn in northern Southland, which still needs a lot of development work. Instead of using their existing machine, an Hitachi UHO83, they decided to upgrade to something a lot more modern and purchased the ZX240LC-5 .The machine has 800mm shoes, the long 3.2m arm and is fitted with a JB hydraulic hitch.

Customer: Paniora Logging Ltd Model: John Deere 748H Rob Paniora of Paniora Logging has been very impressed with the performance of his new JD 748H skidder. The ease of the auto-transmission and traction that it provides in the wet Waipoua Forest has kept production steady for the crew. Seen here is Rob Paniora.

Customer: Rural Contractors Ltd Model: 2 x Hitachi ZX120-3With over 45,000 combined hours on the fleet of four Hitachis, the decision was made by Rural Contractors Ltd in Te Awamutu to replace two of them with two new ZX120-3 excavators — one with apex shoes. It was an easy decision to continue with the Hitachi brand, due to their low maintenance, reliability and resale value.

Customer: Rosewarne Contractors Ltd Model: John Deere 2154DRosewarne Contractors Ltd recently took delivery of their latest John Deere 2154D Log Loader. Nicknamed the Terminator, this particular unit is fitted with a Power Clam Grapple made by CWS Industries in Canada, for high-speed, high-production loading. After spending a few days getting used to it, operator Tas was very complimentary as to the

capabilities of the grapple and believed it would reduce loading times on the skid. Seen here from left to right: Director of CWS Industries, Tim Stubbs; owner of Rosewarne Contractors, Lars Rosewarne; operator, Tas and Dave McFarlane from the John Deere Swing Machine Factory.

Customer: Waikato Bobcat and Digger Services LtdModel: Hitachi ZX85USB-3After the success of his ZX120-3, Shane Hamilton of Waikato Bobcat and Digger services in Te Awamutu, set his sights on a ZX85USB-3. With its short radius, good power and high speed, the Hitachi is setting the benchmark.

Customer: Pemberton Civil Ltd Model: Hitachi ZX330-5 When Sam Pemberton was looking for a large excavator for his Hamilton-based company, it was only natural to add to his fleet of six Hitachis. The ZX330-5g is needed for the big digs that Pemberton Civil Ltd is involved with. With its good looks and digging capability it has impressed everyone who has seen it.

Customer: Stephen Black Model: Hitachi ZX225USR-3 Stephen Black has recently taken delivery of a new Hitachi ZX225USR-3. Stephen’s work mainly consists of farm maintenance work for sheep and dairy farmers in the Balfour, Riversdale area.

Customer: Wayne Clarke Contracting Ltd Model: Hitachi ZX17U-2Wayne Clarke Contracting Ltd, from Rotorua, has purchased a ZX17U-2 with the trailer package. Logan Clarke has taken the new mini, as he prefers to operate it over the 12-13T Hitachi already in the fleet. Wayne started the company in 1989 with a UHO51 excavator and it’s been Hitachi ever since.

Customer: Active Earthworx and Demolition Ltd Model: Hitachi ZX120-3Mark Johnson, from Active Earthworx based in Te Puke, has taken delivery of a new ZX120-3. The new machine comes complete with level II cab protection direct from the factory.

Customer: Warren Fowler Earthmovers Ltd Model: Hitachi ZX225USRLC-3Warren Fowler Earthmovers Limited have recently taken delivery of a Hitachi ZX225USRLC-3, making this the fifth ZX225USR excavator in their fleet.

Customer: Quality Roading Services Model: John Deere 670GPQuality Roading Services, Wairoa, have run with a 670GP John Deere Grader. The operator, Tom, who some say was born on a grader, is really impressed with the torque of the Deere, saying he is a gear up on the previous machine and fuel consumption is down. QRS have received the JDLink system, which monitors the grader’s temperatures, hydraulics and engine along with a whole host of diagnostic capabilities. The joystick steering was sorted after an hour or so. The comments were made that it was just so easy to use, its put back Tom’s retirement another 10 years. The advantage of this sort of control system is that it should attract some young replacements for our aging grader operators.

Customer: Ruakuri Contracting Ltd Model: Hitachi ZX350LCH-5Warren from Ruakuri Contracting in Te Kuiti has taken delivery of the new ZX350LCH-5. Warren wanted more weight than his previous ZX330-3. Also on the wishlist for this machine are double bar grousers and a short arm.

Customer: Reed Contracting Limited Model: John Deere 648H Brian Reed surprised his workers this week when he drove up to the job in a brand new John Deere 648H. The crew were happy, especially the operator Jason, but they also knew that there was going to be a lot more wood on the landing as well. Brian had been contemplating a new Deere skidder for some time but I guess the deal was a good one. What he likes about the new 648H is the big grapple, great productivity and the low fuel consumption from the tried and proven Deere 6068 tier-2 engine. “Simple is best and I only deal with Cables for all the warranty service work,” Brian says. He also liked the lock-up torque converter, the fire-fighting water tank on the roof and full-width blade.

Hitachi’s rubber crawler carriers are powerful vehicles that are ideal for muddy, uneven construction sites. Even with heavy loads, these carriers can run smoothly on soft-ground conditions.

Stamping their authority all over the globe in poor underfoot conditions, the Bell D-series articulated dump trucks are setting a new standard in earthmoving.

The trucks boast incredibly fuel-efficient engines that deliver outstanding productivity for their owners, and the reliability that Bell is renowned for.

With the B50D, Bell became the first manufacturer in the world to develop a 50-tonne artic. From 25 to 50 tonne, Bell has the ADT to suit your specific job requirements.

In purchasing Euclid (a rigid dump truck brand synonymous with the mining industry), Hitachi was able to expand its line-up of mining products, with a world-leading range that perfectly complements its hydraulic excavators.

Hitachi AC-drive technology, developed by Hitachi Limited, provides truck performance with a higher top speed, better gradability and stronger retardation. These features increase the trucks’ productivity and uptime, while reducing operating and maintenance costs, all of which

equates to a lower cost per tonne of material moved. Engineered for performance, designed for comfort and built to last, Hitachi rigid dump trucks make even the toughest jobs look small.

riGid FraMe duMP Trucks

Hitachi is one of the world’s market leaders in large hydraulic excavators. Combining engineering excellence with a dedication to quality, Hitachi makes tough, long-lasting machines that meet the challenges of mining.

Hitachi’s large excavators range in size, from 80 to 800 tonnes. With the ability to keep running for 24-hours straight, these machines have exceptional durability. Their endurance is further proven by the ultra-large excavators, which have

working-time records of over 90,000 hours. This kind of performance is not surprising when you consider that Hitachi’s corporate policy is to never release equipment that is not ready for the field.

In mining, cost-efficiency is all important, and Hitachi’s excavators provide one of the lowest cost-per-tonne options for moving materials in their class. Low maintenance and long lifespans make for machines that give you significant savings!

productivity, uptime and low daily operating costs — to new levels. This is a machine designed to work, day in and day out. All of the models in the K-series range are Loadrite™ ready and feature advantages such as solid-state electronics, highly-efficient Quad-Cool™ cooling and advanced diagnostic monitors. Traditional John Deere durability is inherent in the new K-series design, with booms and mainframes so tough that they’re warranted for three years or 10,000 hours.

EVEN LESS OF A GOOD THING.Whether you’re tiptoeing around zero lot lines, tending livestock, laboring indoors, or removing snow, these nimble skid steers won’t have any trouble fitting in. The small stature enables the 313 to slip comfortably through narrow openings and into tight quarters. Makes them easy to trailer and easy on turf, too.But these “lightweights” won’t get pushed around. Optimal 60/40-weight distribution gives them the stability needed for handling heavy loads. Impressive breakout force and 1,260- and 1,500-lb. rated operatingcapacities deliver plenty of productive punch. And their high-torque turbocharged 2.4-L diesels won’t throw in the towel when the going gets tough, either. With the 313, it’s not the size of the skid steer in the fight, but the size of the fight in the skid steer.
