Virtually everyone has heard about the journey that Mary and Joseph took en route to Bethlehem where Jesus was

born. But what some may not realize is this journey began centuries earlier! Jesus’ arrival was the fulfillment of Old

Testament prophecies that foretold the lineage, location and circumstances of His birth and were written some 400 - 1000

years before He was born!

Who but God alone could plan such wondrous things?

Old Testament Prophecy Regarding the Messiah:

He would be from the House of King David…Jeremiah 23:5-6 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.”

Luke 3:31 “the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David…”

He would be from the lineage of Jesse…Isaiah 11:1 “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.”

Luke 3:32 “the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon…”

He would come out of the Tribe of Judah…Micah 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Luke 3:33 “the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah…”

Luke 2: 4-6 “So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the

time came for the baby to be born.”

Old Testament Prophecy Regarding the Messiah:

He would be born of a virgin…Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Matthew 1:18 “This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was

found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.”

Old Testament Prophecy Regarding the Messiah:

He would be worshipped by shepherds…Psalm 72:9 “May the desert tribes bow before him…”

“Desert tribes” is another name for nomadic shepherds

Luke 2:15 “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the Shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the

Lord has told us about.’”

He would be worshipped and presented gifts by kings…Psalm 72:10-11 “May the kings of Tarshish and of distant shores bring tribute to him. May the kings of Sheba and Seba present him gifts. May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.”

He would be worshipped and presented gifts by kings…Isaiah 60:6 “A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall bring good news, the praises of the LORD.”

Matthew 2:11 “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented

him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.”

Old Testament Prophecy Regarding the Messiah:

He would be called “Lord”…Psalm 110:1 “The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’”

Luke 2:10-11 “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you;

he is the Messiah, the Lord.’”

He would be called, “Son of God”…Psalm 2:7 “I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.’”

Luke 3:22 “and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love;

with you I am well pleased.’”

Old Testament Prophecy Regarding the Messiah:

He would flee to Egypt to escape persecution…Hosea 11:1 “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

Matthew 2:13-14 “When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell

you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.’”

As you are reflecting on meaning of Christmas, don’t forget that Jesus is the fulfillment of centuries old prophesies, and that your personal faith in Him is a part of His eternal plan and legacy of salvation!
