What made America? What makes us who we are? These two questions are at the heart of the new PBS series Faces of America, airing throughout this month on a.

Building on the success of his series African American Lives (called by The New York Times “the most exciting and stirring documentary on any subject to appear on television in a long time”) and African American Lives 2, Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. turns again to the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 11 renowned Americans.

Looking to the wider immigrant experience, Professor Gates unravels the American tapestry, following the threads of his guests’ lives back to their origins around the globe. Along the way, the many stories he uncovers – of displacement and homecoming, of material success and dispossession, of assimilation and discrimination – illuminate the American experience.

Professor Gates’ guests include poet Elizabeth Alexander, who composed and read the poem at President Barack Obama’s inauguration, chef Mario

Batali, comedian Stephen Colbert, novelist Louise Erdrich, writer Malcolm Gladwell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, film director Mike Nichols, Her Royal Highness Queen Noor, actress Eva Longoria, actress Meryl Streep and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.

Faces of America spans four episodes:• “The Promise of America” – Explores the dynamic and shif ting relationship America had with her new immigrants in the 20th century. Discover the buoyant American optimism that shaped the American road to success.

2 Wednesday, February 10, 7pm

LIFE Thursday, February 11, 3pm

• “Becoming American” – Explores the many journeys to becoming American that defined the “Century of Immigration” (1820s-1924) and transformed the United States from a sleepy agrarian country into a booming industrial power.

2 Wednesday, February 17, 7pm

LIFE Thursday, February 18, 3pm

• “Making America” – Tells the story of the peopling of the New World, how land came to define the set tling and identity of America and how the guests’ ancestors were part of this history.

2 Wednesday, February 24, 7pm

LIFE Thursday, February 25, 3pm

• “The Record Within” – Combining the documented stories of some of the guests’ last known ancestors with DNA evidence, the series travels backward through time to reveal both distant relatives and surprising shared ancestral connections. 2 Wednesday, March 3, 7pm

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

This month, a once again brings you

comprehensive coverage of Minnesota’s

Legislature. As a station, one of our main goals is

to encourage civic participation – to provide our

viewers with the facts they need to make informed

decisions – and our Legislative coverage is unlike

any other in the State.

For 13 years we have been your source to watch

live coverage of the Minnesota House and Senate

in action – and the tradition continues today with

full coverage of the Legislature daytimes on the MN

channel. From budgets to education to healthcare,

you can watch your elected officials debate on the

floor of the Capitol.

But not everyone can watch all the live proceedings,

and that is why we also offer you Almanac: At the

Capitol, our award-winning series which offers you

a behind-the-scenes look at the Legislative session.

Host and reporter Mary Lahammer helps distill the

complex workings of the Legislature. She says, “I

always try to boil it down to the ‘Why should I care?’

or ‘So what?’ factor – how will it affect you.”

Mary’s work is complemented by the work of

political commentator David Gillette. David’s

commentary helps viewers understand the

confusing world of Capitol politics. He says, “I try to

step outside the partisan debates and simply explain

how things work.”

Both Mary and David, along with the whole Almanac

and Almanac: At the Capitol team have won

national and local awards in recognition of their

work. Some of these include regional Emmys for

both shows as well as David’s 2008 Emmy for Best

Editorialist and a first place award in both 2008

and 2009 for political analysis by the Association

of Capitol Reporters and Editors. Mary has been

named "Best TV Reporter" by Minnesota Monthly

and "Best Newscaster" by City Pages and has won

her own awards from the Association of Capitol

Reporters and Editors.

As a community organization, a is invested in the health and well-being of our State and with our Legislative coverage we hope to put the power of politics in your hands.

We encourage you to use what

you learn to help strengthen our

community. Active and informed

citizens are critical to our future.

The bold goal of SciGirls is no less than to change how millions of girls think about science, technology, engineering and math – or S.T.E.M., the hottest topic in U.S. education today. Each half-hour episode follows a different group of enthusiastic, real SciGirls, who collaborate, communicate, engineer

and discover. They’re accompanied by two animated characters – a plucky SciGirl named Izzie and her best friend Jake, who tie the series together with their ongoing adventures. “America has an incredible need for scientists and engineers, yet far too few women are choosing those career paths. Girls have the skills, but so many never realize their potential because somewhere along the way, they get discouraged,” says Dr. Richard Hudson, the show’s Executive Producer. “We feel that SciGirls can help turn this trend around, building girls’ natural interest in science and, more importantly, their belief in themselves.” SciGirls integrates TV and the internet in a unique way. In each episode Izzie surfs to the site, jumps into a video of real-life SciGirls, and follows their story, learning and exploring every step of the way. Izzie also invites viewers to hang out on the website

www.pbskidsgo.org/scigirls, a safe social network where they can create personal pages, design their own avatars, upload cool projects and make friends. It’s all about tweens and screens in today’s multi-tasking world – the TV, the laptop, the phone and the iPod, and SciGirls is on them all! Ultimately, SciGirls is about giving girls the confidence to make their own discoveries in science and engineering. “If I had seen this when I was a girl it would have changed my life,” says Ruta Sevo, former Senior Program Director of the National Science Foundation.

SciGirls follows in a's tradition of shows like Newton's Apple and DragonflyTV: award-winning, science-focused shows that make science fun and exciting. It is made possible thanks to a major grant from the National Science Foundation and additional funding from ExxonMobil.

This month, a premieres an all-new, girl-powered science series nationwide on PBS stations.

Heeeeere's Izzie!

Meet Izzie, the animated star of SciGirls, the show about science for girls, by girls!

Izzie is a fun, energetic guide through the world of SciGirls. At the beginning of each episode, we find Izzie and her best friend Jake in a jam that only science can fix. Izzie exclaims “SciGirls, I need you!” Since she runs the SciGirls website, she can magically jump onto the homepage. She flips through the SciGirls videos until she sees girls involved in an activity that might help her solve her own problem. She hits “Play” and we’re into the video, with Izzie following along. At the end of every episode, Izzie uses what the SciGirls taught her to solve her problem. For instance, after watching the SciGirls build their own wind farm, Izzie saves energy by hooking up a generator to an exercise bike – pedaled by Jake, of course. Izzie even helps Jake dig his lucky socks out of his locker at school, using the methods the SciGirls learn on an archeological dig. With Izzie as “webmaster,” SciGirls ties the TV show to the Web as never before, by putting the real website into the TV show itself. Like most websites for PBS shows, we offer plenty of streaming video – putting whole episodes of the TV show on the website – but this is the first time on a PBS KIDS series where the website is a featured on the TV show. In addition to seeing Izzie on the homepage, kids also watch as the SciGirls open their laptops and upload photos of their projects to the site, just as any girl watching can do with her own project. Every episode also includes a home video made by each of the featured SciGirls. This unique, social networking feature of SciGirls gives any girl interested in science a place where she can share her discoveries and inventions with girls anywhere in the world. 2 Fridays, 5:30pm premiering February 12

Late last year, the American Bar Association (ABA) recognized a ’s Vice President and General Counsel Allen Giles with a national award. Allen received the Nelson Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the ABA by a government or public sector lawyer.

Allen has a long history of working for the public sector; before joining a, he served from 1999 to 2008 as general counsel to Minneapolis Public Schools. For the 10 years prior, he was an administrative law judge with the Minnesota Office of Administrative Hearings. He also served 14 years as a special assistant attorney general for the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office.

With the ABA, Allen served as chair of their Government and Public Sector Lawyers Division from 2004 to 2005 and developed several initiatives that continue to drive the Division.

When Allen became chair of the Division in 2004, he called attention to a vital constituency of the Division: law students. Under his leadership, the Division significantly increased outreach to law students considering careers in public service; the number of programs presented increased, as did the amount of outreach to law students nationwide. Also during Allen’s tenure, the Division overhauled its law student webpage. It evolved from a basic list of member benefits to an inviting, comprehensive space where law students could find vital resources.

The Division also added two new webpages to the website under Allen’s leadership, an ethics webpage and a pro bono webpage. Even with his many years of service and significant accomplishments, Allen continues to devote his time, energy and talents to furthering the mission of the ABA and the Government and Public Sector Lawyers Division, he says, “It is an honor to provide public service and be committed to the public practice of law."
