Environmental Pollution 43 (1987) 323-326 Book Reviews Toxic Metals in the Atmosphere. Edited by J. O. Nriagu and C. I. Davidson. Wiley, 1986. Pp. 635, ISBN 0 471 82654 5. Price: £102.25. There are nineteen chapters which discuss, in as quantitative terms as practicable, methods of measuring and estimating trace metal emissions, amounts emitted from natural sources and human activities, the physics and chemistry of metals in the atmosphere, and the deposition of metals both around industrial sources and further away in rural, remote, Arctic and Antarctic areas. About half of the chapters are by authors from North America, one chapter from Japan and the rest from Europe. A useful book for information on sources and pathways of, and exposures to, trace metals in the atmosphere. Emissionsminderung Automobilabgase Dieselmotoren. VDI Bericht 559, produced by the VDI-Commission on Air Pollution Prevention. VDI- Verlag GmbH, 1985. Pp. 519, ISSN 0083 5560; ISBN 3 18 090559 X. Price: DM 148. This volume contains the 27 lectures, plus summing-up, given at a colloquium held in Nuremberg in October 1985. All papers are in German, predominantly by authors from the Federal Republic of Germany. They focus on the control of emissions from diesel engines in road transport, and discuss the conflict between attempts to reduce both fuel consumption and undesirable emissions such as NO x, possible engine designs, and the effect of fuel quality. 323 Environ.

This volume contains the 27 lectures, plus summing-up, given at a colloquium held in Nuremberg in October 1985. All papers are in German, predominantly by authors from the Federal Republic of Germany.
