History

Townsville City Council Electoral Division 9 contains some of Townsville earliest post-settlements and some of the City’s most recognisable landmarks . The suburb of Hyde Park was originally an estate owned by local chemist William Clayton and was part of the Thuringowa Shire until it became part of Townsville in 1918 .

West End is home to two of Townsville most significant historical sites, the West End Cemetery, Townsville’s first official cemetery and second burial ground, in use since at least 1868 and containing the graves of dozens of the city’s pioneers and their families . The second site being the Townsville Showground, established in 1882 and has been the continuous use as the home of the Townsville Show ever since .

Mysterton is home to one of Townsville’s most historic houses: Rosebank, on Lawson Street . Rosebank once belonged to Townsville pioneer Andrew Ball, and is still a privately owned residence .

Rosslea is named after John Deane’s property of the same name . John Deane served on many political boards and committees . Pimlico was offered as subdivided land on the estate and was first offered for sale in the late 1880s . However, development and population growth in the suburb was very slow: by 1911, there were still only 77 residents recorded, and an aerial photograph of the suburb from 1938 (the earliest available) shows an area that is still very sparsely populated .

Flinders and Sturt Streets are the two main thoroughfares that run south and west from Blackwood Street in the Townsville CBD . While high density residential development has been a recent arrival on the scene in this part of this city, it has more historically housed low density residential, commercial and retail establishments (especially along ‘Flinders Street West’), as well as industry in the form of the railway station and maintenance yards along the northern bank of Ross Creek . Sturt Street only became an access point to and from the city comparatively recently . Until the late 1950s, an outcrop of Castle Hill blocked passage along Sturt Street . The area served as a quarry for a time, and in approximately 1958, the area was excavated to enable Sturt Street to run seamlessly into and out of the city . This area is known to this day as ‘The Cutting’ .

Our Key Statistics

Population

As of 30 June 2014 the estimated resident population (ERP) for Division 9 was 18,370 persons . From 2004 to 2014 the Division grew by1,573 people . The average annual growth rate from 2004 to 2014 was 0 .9%, less than the growth rate for Townsville which was 2 .4% .

From 2011 to 2036, the population of Division 9 is projected to increase from 18,025 persons to 22,603 persons, representing an average annual growth rate of 0 .9% .

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population is 6 .6% .

Household Structure

In 2011 there were 7,302 households in Division 9 . Fifty-five percent (55 .1%) were one family households, 37 .1% were lone person households, 6 .9% were group households and 0 .9% were multiple family households .

Division 9 has a diverse range of families . In 2011, the Division comprised the following: 34% couples with children, 39 .5% were couples without children and 23 .4% of families were one parent families .

In 2011 the average household size was 2 .1 persons .

Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) (measure socio-economic disadvantage)

24 .9% of the division were in the most disadvantaged quintile (quintile 1) with 4 .1% in the least disadvantaged quintile .

Emerging Group

From 2001 to 2014, the largest increase occurred with persons occurred in the age group 45 to 65 years, which grew from 20 .2% to 24 .8% . Division 5 experienced a decline in the percentage of persons aged 15-24 years, falling from 18 .1% in 2001 to 15 .7% in 2014p .

In Division 9, the age group 25-44 years is expected to fall from a rate of 29 .9% of the population in 2011 to 26 .2% of the population in 2036 .

Major Facilities

The area contains several major facilities including the Mater Hospital (Pimlico and Hyde Park) and their surrounding medical precincts . The division is home to four (4) primary schools and three (3) high schools . A major shopping centre “Castletown Shopping World” is located in the north-west of the division . Major open spaces and sport and recreation areas in the division include but are not limited to the Anderson Park Botanical Gardens, Mindham Park, the Townsville Golf Club, Reid Park, the Townsville Show Grounds and Bicentennial Park .
