Townsville is a hotspot for holidaymakers visiting North Queensland. Whether you want to relax and unwind on a beach, indulge in some shopping or book a diving adventure, you won’t be short on things to see and do.

Townsville was initially established because the first settlers in the region required a seaport north of the Burdekin River, which was vulnerable to flooding. In 1864, John Melton Black dispatched a search party to find a suitable location, and Cleveland Bay was subsequently discovered. Backed financially by a Sydney merchant, Robert Towns, a settlement was laid down and, in his honour, was named Townsville.

In 1892, a new harbour was established to allow ships to anchor in protected waters further out and so, with the expansion of the sugar industry, the port was utilised more and more.

Nonetheless, the commencement of World War I, along with the ailing goldfields, adversely affected Townsville. The German occupation in Papua New Guinea saw ships re-routed and a railway constructed in 1924 connected Queensland regional and coastal areas.

In 1942, during World War II, Townsville was fortified with a military presence but was still targeted by the Japanese and bombed. The damage was minimal and, at the close of the war, Townsville went on to thrive and become what it is today.

Magnetic Island is an essential element of the North Queensland holiday experience.

This world-heritage listed island is only 8km’s from the Townsville city centre. It takes 20 minutes by ferry or 45 minutes by car ferry to reach this island paradise.

On discovery in 1770, Magnetic Island was named as such by Captain Cook because he believed a magnetic force interfered with his compass whilst there. It’s purported that Errol Flynn owned a gold mine there in the last century.

‘Maggie’, as locals affectionately now call the island, is a residential island with a true village atmosphere. Over two thirds of the island is national park and more than 2,000 people call Magnetic Island their home. Maggie is also home to Northern Australia’s largest colony of koalas in the wild.

Water activities abound on Magnetic Island as well as land-based recreational pursuits such as golf, tennis, bushwalking and, of course, lazing on the glorious beaches.

Interpretive signage across the island provides a guide for visitors looking to explore, learn and discover the diverse environments, wildlife, walking tracks, shipwrecks and heritage of the island.

‘Maggie’ is a colourful and eclectic island where you can retreat and relax, or join in the island’s village

life. From Picnic Bay through to Horseshoe Bay, the experience is friendly and delightfully tropical—island life in the tropics!
