WHAT IS TOWN PLANNING ?The art and science of ordering the use of land and siting of buildings and communication routes so as to secure the maximum practicable degree of economy, convenience, and beauty ORAn art of shaping and guiding the physical growth of the town creating buildings and environments to meet the various needs such as social, cultural, economic and recreational etc. and to provide healthy conditions for both rich and poor to live, to work, and to play or relax, thus bringing about the social and economic well-being for the majority of mankind.

What do planners do?

Town planners are great verbal and written communicators and they have a great deal of knowledge about all types of architecture and infrastructure, and their effect on the environment. Planners manage our towns and countryside on everyone's behalf. Their main role is to balance various needs (those of the environment, the local economy and the local population) and to come up with innovative solutions.

Modern planning in PakistanTown or city planning today is based on a number of factors, other than more psychological factors, Even as recent as the beginning of the 20th century, town plans were prepared exclusively for engineers, architects or landscape architects, who focused their attention mostly to the alignment of avenues, and streets. They paid very little attention to the more important sociological aspects of the town. No doubt, schools, hospitals, and other amenities were provided to serve the town, but their position, and location were not usually to the best advantage of inhabitants.

Today the design of a city or town, is approached from a different angle. The sociological and economic considerations are more important than the physical than the physical environments or the alignment of Avenue and roads. In the present day planning, more consideration is given to problems such as:The destination and location of various social amenities, such as schools, hospitals, shopping centers and parks for each neighborhood, so as to be within easy reach of people.Proper distribution of open places for recreational purposes of different age-group.CONTINUE.....
