Wa-r. c -r.-u , ,. -marriage records as reported in PENNSYLVANIA ARCHIVES 2nd Series V 9, items from Second Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia:

1809 Nov 4 Clayton, Ann, and John Scobey

I have never been able to find out anything further on these two, but subsequently found a number of other marriages between Claytons and Scobeys. I have been working with a lady who lives nearby who is researching the Scobey family, but no far no luck.

Other Clayton items in the above records include:'

1807 Sept 10 Clayton, Catherine, and Robert Parham 1791 Dec 18 Clayton, Charles and Eleanor Watson 1809 May 11 Clayton, Mary, and John Duckin 1773 Aug 5 Clayton, Parnell and Mary Grimes

This church was organized in 1743, first Pastor was the Rev. Gilbert Tennent. I have an article describing the church and its Pastors, but there is no mention of the word Reformed in the write-up.

f/«-Ju!p^u>_.UVY\cJtt>J ^U, Znf^UsS *Mf-0| WILLIAM CLAYTON OF CHICHESTER

The following new Information on the ancestry of William Clayton of Chichester 1s the result of research «\ conducted 1n England by Locls E. Jones. N.

\ k . I THOMAS CLAYTON, b. ca 1500, 1s known to have made a Nw1ll In Rudgwlck parish 1557-Ju1y-04, proved

1557-Oct-05 (Consistory Court Wills Register 1553-1571, Yol. 8, p. 268, microfilm XA10/6, 1n West Sussex Records Offices, Chichester, Sussex, England). This will 1n bold writing but very faded contains no signatures and names no witnesses. Based upon the wording of the will, the maker was probably a Roman Catholic, reflecting his Norman heritage, which he would have retained despite the acts of the Reformation Parliament 1529-1536, breaking the Church In England headed by King Henry VIII away from the Church In Rome. This will, naming his wife MARGARET, a son JOHN, a daughter Alice and a son-in-law (- -) Nalovlte?, was partially transcribed by Louis E. Jones, 1984-May-21. Other children may have been named 1n the Illegible portions of the will. His children:

I John Clayton, or an unnamed brother was possibly the father of:

Jones, 1984), names his wife MARGARET, sons Walter (probably eldest, named with his mother as Executor), WILLIAM (probably second eldest, named with Thomas Penfold to assist his mother and older brother In their duties as executors), Mathew, Richard and Thomas; daughters Mary wife of Richard Martin, and Elizabeth. Pee'.e of Pegham as bondsman; Will Steele a miller living without the East Gate of Chichester and John Avery formerly of Chichester as auditors; and Thomas Hopkins and John Rogers as witnesses. Total bequests over the ensuing twenty years totalled 161 shillings, a sizeable estate at that time. His children:

1.31 WILLIAM CLAYTON OF CHICHESTER, b. 1625, baptized 1632-Dec-09, below. 1.32 Elizabeth Clayton, baptized 1637-Feb-ll, Boxgrove, Sussex. 1.33 Richard Clayton, baptized 1640-Sep-13, Boxgrove, Sussex. 1.34 Thomas Clayton, baptized 1642-Feb-26, Boxgrove, Sussex. Jj 1.35 Mary Clayton, b. after 1644, daughter by second marriage. ** y*r«-

1.31 WILLIAM CLAYTON OF CHICHESTER, born 1625, Parish of Rumbaldswlck, near Chichester, Sussex. England, baptized 1632-Dec-09. Boxgrove, Sussex. Married 1653-Nov-07, St. Pancras Parish, Chichester, Couty Sussex, England (Parish and vital records listings, LDS Church, London, England; and St. Pancras Parish, Chichester, Sussex, Parish Register Calendar, by V. London, 1945, copied by Louis E. Jones, 1982), PRUDENCE LANCKFORD of St. Peters the less, daughter of WILLIAM LANCKFORD of Broughton Parish, Hampshire. She was probably born In Surrey according to "The Genealogy of the Gordon-Hacy, MHdleton-Curtls And Allied Families". Prudence Lanckford may have married (1) -— Mlckles who died prior to 1653./. ___

... above mentioned will together with early Quaker records of Chichester and KUHIOA iai« icn, iituuy »•«.•..< ,.»»....»,. ^ prove conclusively that William Clayton of Chichester was not the son of a London lawyer or Oxford University u t

dlgnltary.^Ttalso opens to conjecture the possibility that Thomas Clayton, I above, might have been the grandson of Thomas De Clayton, b. ca 1440 (page 13 of the Editor's book 'The Quaker Yeomen"), eldest son of John de Clayton and Mary Malnwarlng, who was disinherited for disobeying his parents. Nothing further Is known of this Thomas except that his third son Robert de Clayton succeeded to his grandfather's estates. The name of his"wife 1s jjnknpwrt} It 1s likely that he was disinherited for a marriage unacceptable to his parents. Perhaps his two eldest sons died young, allowing Robert to 1:iher1t from his grandfather, or perhaps the two eldest sons were not allowed to Inherit by their grandfather. It Is likely that having been disinherited, Thomas would have left West Lancashire, perhaps settling 1n London, or Sussex, a days Journey south of London at that time. It seems likely that 1f this conjecture 1s correct, that the son of Thomas who was the father of Thomas (I above) would have been named Thomas, since that name appears 1n each generation of this family. The fact that Thomas, b. ca 1440, 1s the only West Lancashire Clayton, whose dates would connect him to the Sussex Claytons, whose descendants are unaccounted for. This Is certainly an area for research by those who are Interested. The Editor has learned that many of the Sussex records of this period are on microfilm 1n the L.D.S. Library at Salt Lake City, and can be obtained for research at local L.D.S. libraries.
