Greetings from Mayor Gant,

Spring is around the corner. Soon, the flowering trees will be blooming, the birds will be singing, and we will be barbequing in the back yard. Edmonston is fortunate to have such wonderful spaces to celebrate special occasions and spend time with our families. Your Edmonston team of elected officials and staff have been busy. We completed an exciting 2018 with several projects and events. We are currently busy finalizing FY19-20 annual budget. We anticipate not raising taxes once again, which means we must continue to aggressively seek grants to offset the cost of fixing and repairing our infrastructure. Since becoming Mayor in 2014, I and our current Administration have been able to attract and deliver over $1.3 million in grant funds. These grants are written by our Administrative staff. We recently completed: • painting the stripping on Decatur Street • improved drainage at the corner of 51st and Decatur • new sidewalks, curb & gutter on one block of 49th Avenue

currently bidding the improvements to repair Decatur Street • The design of a sidewalk on 52nd Avenue and Crittenden is

underway. In addition, a demonstration project of installing pervious curb and gutter on 46th Avenue will be completed this summer.

If you have not done so already, please take the time to visit the new revamped neighborhood park on 47th Avenue. On May 11th we will be celebrating the grand re-opening of the 47th Avenue Park and unveiling its name.

We want to thank the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission for their work. In addition, via a grant from the Maryland Wildlife and Parks, we improved the fence at 47th Avenue Park and constructed a rain garden. It’s Time to Till the Soil. Our Garden Keeper, Council Member Johnson will soon be busy working with the gardeners at the Community Garden. We are expanding the garden to accommodate requests for plots. There is more on Grants as Town staff is finalizing the first round of awards for the “Edmonston Beautiful” program. Ten homeowners were assisted in the first round with painting, gutter replacement, fences and various improvements. We have been awarded $50,000 for another round. You can stop by Town Hall to obtain an application. Our event committee and our Green Team are busy planning lots of activities for 2019. We started the year with a movie night to celebrate “Black History Month” and our local churches sponsored a prayer breakfast. We culminated the month with a black History Celebration at the Recreation Center. Our next event is our annual Arbor Day celebration on April 6 at 9:00 a.m. at Town Hall, followed by our Spring Festival and Egg Hunt at 47th Avenue Park at 11:00 a.m. Our Green Team is sponsoring a team for the annual “Anacostia Watershed Society Earth Day” cleanup on April 13th. Since Spring is here, it is time to clean out the closets and make the yard look beautiful. We are having our popular DUMPSTER DAY on Saturday, April 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We will be handing out recycling tips that day. May brings a new event for us. We are sponsoring a bring a senior citizen to Casino Night at the Recreation Center on Friday night, May 3rd. It should be lots of fun. We are partnering with Community Forklift to sponsor a rest stop on the annual “Bike to Work” day. It is Friday, May 17th. Also, we will be honoring our fallen heroes and family members in our annual Memorial Day ceremony at Veteran’s Park that is to be scheduled. La primavera está a la vuelta de la esquina. Pronto, los árboles estarán floreciendo, los pájaros cantarán y tendremos una comida al aire libre en el patio. Edmonston tiene la fortuna de tener espacios tan maravillosos. Para celebrar ocasiones especiales y pasar tiempo con nuestras familias. Su equipo de oficiales de Edmonston y su personal han estado ocupados completando un impresionante 2018 con varios proyectos y eventos. Actualmente estamos ocupados finalizando el presupuesto anual FY19-20. Nosotros anticipamos no aumentar los impuestos una vez más, lo que significa que debemos continuar buscando activamente subvenciones para compensar el costo de la reparación y reparando nuestra infraestructura. Budget Reminders The Mayor and Town Council are working on the proposed Budget for FY19-20. Copies of the Proposed Budget Ordinance are available for those who are interested at the Edmonston Town Hall. Any questions on the budget, please contact the Town Administrator, Rod Barnes at 301 699-8806. On Wednesday, April 10, 2019; the Mayor and Town Council will be setting the tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year. The proposed tax rates are: This represents a reduction from the FY18-19 budget. The rate for FY18-19 was $0.5978 per $100 Assessed Value. Proposed Tax Rate: $ 0.5748 per $ 100 Assessed Proposed Business Personal Property Tax Rate: $ 1.50 per $ 100 Assessed In addition, the Town Council will consider the introduction of Ordinance 2019-O-02 at their regular Town Council meeting on April 10, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 5005 52nd Avenue. The Council will consider final adoption of the proposed budget at their May 8 meeting.

NEWS FROM EDMONSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT Gas Station Safety Tips Most of the time, gas station customers leave their car doors unlocked and items like purses and wallets are often left in plain view. A thief can drive up next to the victim’s car, open an unlocked door, and grab any valuables within reach. Then, the thief quickly drives off. It happens in a matter of seconds.

• Pick stations that are well-lit and have video surveillance cameras at the pump. • Always remove your keys and lock the doors while you are pumping gas. • Keep valuables out of plain view in your vehicle and lock the doors even if you are

going inside for a moment. • Pay attention to your surroundings. • Don’t let your cell phone distract you.

Neighborhood Safety Tips

Unfortunately, no neighborhood is completely immune to crime. However, there are steps you can take to help keep your family and your neighborhood safe.

• Know where your children are. Have your children tell you or ask permission before leaving the house and give them a time to check in or be home. When possible, have them leave a phone number of where they will be.

• Help children learn important phone numbers. Have your children practice reciting their home phone number and address, and your work and cell phone numbers. If they have trouble memorizing these, always write them down on a card and have them carry it. Tell your children where you will be and the best way to reach you.

• Set limits on where your children can go in your neighborhood. Do you want them crossing busy roads? Playing in alleys or abandoned buildings? Are there certain homes in your neighborhood that you don’t want your children to go to?

• Get to know your children’s friends. Meet their parents before letting your children to go to their home and keep a list of their phone numbers. If you can’t meet their parents, call and talk to them. Ask what your children might do at their house and if they will be supervised.

• Choose a safe house in your neighborhood. Pick a neighbor’s house where your children can go if they need help. Point out other places they can go for help, like stores, libraries, and police stations.

• Teach children to settle arguments with words, not fists. Role-play talking out problems, walking away from fist fights, and what to do when confronted with bullies. Remind them that taunting, and teasing can hurt friends and make enemies.

• Work together with your neighbors. Watch out for suspicious and unusual behavior in your neighborhood. Get to know your neighbors and their children so you can look out for one another.

Mosquito Control Services Beginning May 29, 2019 Adulticiding will begin May 29, 2019 and run through September 17, 2019. The Maryland Department of Agriculture manages the mosquito control services for Prince George’s County towns. The State does surveillance to determine spraying. Their threshold is 3 female mosquitoes in 2 minutes in a landing rate count or 24 female mosquitoes in a bated light trap. Spraying for adult mosquitoes will be based on results from standardized surveillance methods and complaints received. However, due to variable weather conditions and other factors, we cannot guarantee that surveillance or spraying will be conducted during any given week, even if we receive community complaints. Spray activity occurs in the late evening to try to coincide with the time of peak mosquito activity. Our community will be scheduled for a specific weeknight subject to weather conditions. If weather conditions are not suitable for spraying on our scheduled night, there will not be a make-up night. If the sprayer operator encounters TOO MANY PEOPLE OUTSIDE in the spray area, spraying will NOT be conducted. Permethrin – Is in the class of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides. This product has low toxicity to mammals and birds and a quick knockdown of mosquitoes. It is sprayed from a truck mounted ultralow volume (ULV) sprayer and drifts up to 300 feet with the prevailing wind. It is not persistent in the environment. The staff uses it at a rate of 2/3 of a fluid ounce per acre. Mosquitoes can breed in any water-holding container, including bird baths, wading pools, pet watering dishes, tin cans, old tires, clogged gutters or flower pot drainage saucers. To prevent mosquito breeding in these areas, water should be changed weekly in bird baths, wading pools, and pet dishes. Gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year, and other water-holding containers should be disposed of or stored upside down. It is resident’s responsibility to make sure that their property is free of water-holding containers. The mosquito control program efforts alone are not particularly effective against Asian tiger mosquitos. If residents do not help by keeping properties free of mosquito breeding containers, the program will not significantly reduce mosquito populations in the neighborhoods.
