The Situation

SHJ “financially active” congregation has shrunk

Our organization is set up to handle twice the congregation

We have been running a deficit for the last two years

If we don’t act now our savings will be depleted in 15 months


How We Make Money


SHJ is Losing Money

2006-2007 deficit= $247,619

2007-2008 deficit= $559,595

The dramatic increase in 2008 losses is due primarily to a flawed budgeting process.

Income from the school tuition and church offertory was over-estimated.

Expenses were based upon budgeted revenues

Expenses now being aligned to actual revenue.


How did we get here?

Mistakenly Optimistic

Aging Infrastructure/Deferred maintenance

Parish Center was over-staffed for revenue


Some Facts

The Archdiocese expects the parish to invest approximately $200,000/year in our children by offsetting a portion of the school’s operating costs

Annual offertory giving is down

Several benefactors are willing to make substantial donations for capital projects

Recent increase in work being done by volunteers


Good News is….

The parish is spiritually vibrant 1000 registered families –

hundreds unregistered 200+ volunteers help run the

church and school Increasing numbers of First

Communicants, Confirmandi, RCIA participants

The parish is solvent

Communication may slow down for a while Need to transition to more modern / economical

forms of outreach and build a volunteer staff to assist

Mission, education caliber and care for our children will remain unchanged

Finance Council working with Principal (Jan) during budgetary process

School Advisory Team (SAT) will develop long-term plan for financial sustainability (fundraising, drive enrollment, curriculum review, etc.)


The Future

We Will Become Self-sustaining Vibrant parish – solid donations – exceptional school

– great people

We Must Rely on Volunteers Personnel expense is our largest cost driver

We Must Rebuild Our Savings A healthy savings account has given us a buffer to

avert crisis – we need to rebuild it.
