The Situation

SHJ “financially active” congregation has shrunk

Our organization is set up to handle twice the congregation

We have been running a deficit for the last two years

If we don’t act now our savings will be depleted in 15 months

How We Make Money

SHJ is Losing Money

2006-2007 deficit= $247,619

2007-2008 deficit= $559,595

The dramatic increase in 2008 losses is due primarily to a flawed budgeting process.

Income from the school tuition and church offertory was over-estimated.

Expenses were based upon budgeted revenues

Expenses now being aligned to actual revenue.

How did we get here?

Mistakenly Optimistic

Aging Infrastructure/Deferred maintenance

Parish Center was over-staffed for revenue

Impact to the Church

Ministries will change Religious education, Hispanic, Youth and Liturgy

will be led by volunteers RCIA, Sacramental preparation, school, religious

education will continue Volunteer support will be critical

Less paid help Transition to volunteer staff may take time and

some less important things may not be attended to in a timely manner

Communication may slow down for a while Need to transition to more modern / economical

forms of outreach and build a volunteer staff to assist

The Future

We Will Become Self-sustaining Vibrant parish – solid donations – exceptional school

– great people

We Must Rely on Volunteers Personnel expense is our largest cost driver

avert crisis – we need to rebuild it.
