Dear Friends
With a ‘hung Parliament’ and an economic crisis that will soon
touch all our lives more deeply perhaps now is the time to reflect on
how we meet the crises that come our way. It is said that in this
moment you are either just coming out of a crisis, or you’re in one
or you’re headed for one. They are part of life. The writer Rick
Warren tells us that in Acts 27 there is a story of a ship wreck and in
it we can find three insights for crisis management:
Determine the Reason. This can be deeper than it first appears, but
in the story there were three reasons
• They listened to bad advice
• They followed popular opinion
• They relied on circumstances rather than what they knew was
the right thing to do.
Determine the Result. Ask “What can I learn from this?’ Every
crisis is an opportunity to enlarge our perspective, sharpen our skills
and develop our characters
Determine my Response. Ask ‘What is the best way to respond to
this?’ Our response should include:
• Confront the problem—we rarely solve a problem by ignoring
it. God will be with us if we ask for strength
• Confess our part (if any) Don’t make excuses or blame
others—accepting responsibility is a mark of emotional
maturity
• Claim a promise—there are over 7500 promises of God to
help you in the Bible.
The church is here to support you and in the days that lie ahead let’s
look out for one another and together with God we will cope.
God Bless,
Vicky Fleming

A number of mini workshops, seeking the views of members of the various organisations, took place during May, with structured workshop to allow
residents to put their views and comments into the discussions on an
expansion of the village being held on Weds 26th and Thurs 27th May.

The Borough’s Traffic Report for South Marston has now been published.
It is a thorough report looking at all the current traffic issues of the village and suggesting options for dealing with the Pound Corner pedestrian safety

Recent Events
On Saturday 8th May we visited the Malvern Spring Show.
Though it was cold and wet at times it did not spoil our enjoyment of the day. All the members and those from the
Gardening Club who joined us were satisfied with the outing.
At our regular meeting on Tuesday 11th May the evening entertainment was by Ray Bewes who told us yarns based on true events and read poems he had
written. He also works on a programme on community radio 105.5 FM and would be happy to have music requests sent in to him. After the entertainment
the chair of the Parish Council, Colin McEwen gave a talk about the forthcoming workshop evenings on the Village expansion being run by NEWMasterplanning,
consultants to the PC.

South Marston Village NEW Conservation Site
Put your name into South Marston !!
South Marston residents are being given a unique opportunity to name and
help design this conservation site close to the village centre. The land is
currently being prepared by volunteers and will soon be ready take on the
shape of the winning design.
We are holding a competition to gather the best ideas from village
residents and local groups, then we will use these ideas to help name and
create a place of interest for all. There are no set ideas in place and
we will be working closely with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to assist us
in the final layout.
Below are some ideas to get you thinking, but it is your own ideas that we
really want:
⇒ A unique name for the site
⇒ A habitat for wildlife?
⇒ An area of natural interest for plants and birds?
⇒ A quiet place to sit and reflect?
⇒ A water feature?
⇒ A bridge?
⇒ A gateway into the site (this is a must-have )
⇒ Small pathways?
⇒ A place for local works of art?
⇒ To use for school learning about our countryside?
You are welcome to visit the site to have an understanding of the nature of
the existing trees and lay of the land.
! Remember that local volunteers will carry out the work !
The entries judged to be the most imaginative and suitable will be used to
complete the final design. If there is more than one winning idea then the
best ideas from each design chosen will be used. Specialists in conservation
will judge entries.
The selected designs will have the names inscribed on a plaque
that will be on display in the conservation area.

South Marston Village NEW Conservation Site
How to Enter
Entries must be submitted by the 30th June 2010 to members of the volunteer
committee, known as the SMAWL group (South Marston Assisting Wildlife),
See bottom of page for details of where to send your entries.
Using the plan of the site provided with the Tower & Tap, please draw your
ideas using colour and a description for your concept. Your idea for the name
for the site must include a brief explanation for your idea.
You should also provide a short description of what you want the site to
represent and what you would like it to be used for. For designs for the gate
etc (if you want to add these) please use a separate sheet of white A4 paper.
A plan in A3 size is available from the SMAWL Group, please contact Barry
Thunder on 826697 if you would like one.
The plan provided is approx to scale, however you are advised to visit the site
to gain a clear idea of the features of the land and layout of the hedges and
trees already there.
We hope to receive funding to help us to develop the site and to utilise local
volunteers to do the work. None of this will happen unless we have designs to
work to, so this really is your opportunity to place your ideas and name into
village life.
We look forward to receiving your designs – remember this is open to ALL
ages, so come on and show your thoughts, ideas and innovations that will allow
us to develop a site for the whole village to be proud of.
Please include your Name, Address and a Contact Telephone
Number with your entry and post or deliver to:
Barry Thunder, 5 Rawlings Close, South Marston, SN3 4XA or
Brian McGlone, 3 Bryon Court, South Marston, SN3 4TH
By entering this competition you consent to the use of your name in
any future publicity related to your design idea.

South Marston C of E School News
Fundraising Triumph
Swindon Mayor, David Wren, presented a £5,000 cheque to Swindon Guide Dogs Chair, Alan Fletcher at South Marston C of E
Primary School after they raised the most money in a
competition.
The prize was that the children got to name the new dog, and the name
they have chosen is “Marston”.
The school will now hope-fully keep in touch with the dog's trainers and owners in
the future.
The money from the Mayor’s Charity Fund, raised with the help of several local schools, will buy a guide dog and pay for its training and upkeep for
a year.
13
We are in the final weeks of the
current building project and are really excited at the prospect of
using the new facilities.
We will have a new group room and meeting room for the children
to use but we will also be able to open this for community use in the
future. The meeting room is in the
front of the building with the beautiful stone window.
A new dining area has been built
which will be used by the children every lunchtime and we will be
providing hot meals again in the
not too distant future.
We are hoping that the kitchen will
also be used by the community for
lunches at Christmas and even on a more regular basis.
There may even be call for a village
tea shop and we would be very interested to hear of any ideas that
the community might have.
We will hold an open day to show everyone our new facilities before
the end of the summer term.

Our April meeting gave us an interesting talk by
Mr. Bolton. After a brief history of his life
and how his interest in gardening began, he let us in
on a few secrets on how to prepare vegetables for
showing. He admitted he had failures, but these had
a purpose, they can be eaten. On Sat 15th May a few
of our members enjoyed a sunny day travelling on a steam train
at Toddington.
Future Events Our next meeting is on Monday 7th June at 7:30pm. We will be
learning about 'Composting' from Kate Robinson.
On Saturday 26th June we will be taking a trip to
Kiftsgate Gardens and Chipping Campden leaving
from outside the school at 9:30am.
