CALL FOR EARLY CAREER PLENARY SPEAKERS

Regional Studies Association Annual Conference 2017

The Great Regional Awakening: New Directions

4th - 7th June 2017, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland

The Regional Studies Association has a deep seated commitment to furthering and supporting the

career development of early career researchers (within 5 years after finishing their PhD). Part of this

commitment is to offer the opportunity to present in a Plenary at the RSA’s major Annual Conference.

Other initiatives include the Early Career Grant Scheme (£10k grant); the inclusion of early career

editors on RSA journals; the early career mentored paper route to publication in the journal Regional

Studies, Regional Science; the annual student & early career conference, and having an active student

and early career network run by the members in those categories supported by lively social media

activity.

We now seek applications from early career researchers to present an Early Career Plenary Presentation at the forthcoming Dublin, Ireland, Annual Conference 2017. For more details on this major international conference, visit www.regionalstudies.org/conferences/conference/rsa-dublin-2017

Applications should take the form of both a short video and a 300-word abstract for the presentation

and this may be on any topic in line with the conference’s themes. The application should include the

following:

Name and contact details

Place of employment

Short version CV (4-page maximum)

300-word abstract of the paper to be presented

Short video (maximum 4 minutes) of the paper to be presented

Evidence of eligibility to apply/ PhD certificate – early career researchers are defined as being within 5 years of the date on their PhD.

Videos filmed on a smart phone with reasonable clarity of vision and sound are perfectly acceptable for the purposes of the competition. Applicants should clearly present their name and institution on the video. They should outline their research, its relevance to the conference topics and explain why they should be selected for the plenary presentation. The decision will be taken by a committee of the RSA including the Association’s Chair, the local

academic conference organisers and the CEO. The successful candidate will be informed as soon as

possible following the closing date. The award includes a complimentary place at the conference, a

contribution towards travel expenses and 2 nights’ accommodation.

Applicants are expected to be either an RSA member on application or to take out RSA membership

on acceptance.

the Great Regional Awakening: New Directions

Trinity College Dublin & University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland Sunday 4th – Wednesday 7th June 2017

Call for Papers – Abstract submission deadline: 24th February 2017

A ‘Great Regional Awakening’ is underway. There is a growing realisation that regional inequalities have both contributed to, and amplified, the ‘Great Recession’ that shook advanced and emerging economies alike. It is also becoming apparent that the crisis has been having very different impacts spatially. This will only help to further exacerbate uneven economic development, fuelling more trouble down the line. In Europe, major economic fault-lines are re-emerging between and within national economies; between the core and the periphery; between urban and rural areas; between city-regions and within cities themselves. This pattern is replicated elsewhere - in advanced, emerging and developing world. There is an urgent need to re-examine all aspects of local and regional development and how it relates to national and international economic dynamics; and to social, political, cultural, technological and environmental processes. Having spent over 50 years advocating more balanced regional development, the Regional Studies Association is now spearheading a major effort to address these pressing issues in such challenging times. We are thus calling upon regional studies experts, spatial scientists, economists, business studies scholars, political scientists, local development specialists, urban geographers, spatial planners, transport experts, development studies scholars, environmentalists, sociologists, economic geographers, financial geographers, academics, researchers and practitioners alike, to join us to be part of ‘New Directions’ in regional studies! REGIONAL STUDIES ASSOCIATION CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN CONFERENCE 2017 Regional Polarisation and Unequal Development in CEE: Challenges for Innovative Place-based Policies 10th – 13th September 2017, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Abstract Submission deadline: 23rd May 2017

Over the last decades new patterns of regional disparities

and polarisation have developed in Central and Eastern

European (CEE) countries, drawing the attention of both

researchers and policy-makers. Cohesion Policy

responded to this challenge by focusing on balanced

spatial development of the European regions. However,

although achieving significant progress in developing

towards the EU-average, CEE still faces serious internal

spatial imbalances between metropolitan and non-

metropolitan areas, between core regions and

peripheries.

The increasing social and economic disparities at regional

level within CEE have led to the need to develop new

strategies with a strong spatial focus, in order to deal with

and respond to the challenges. This conference seeks to

explore questions such as: how can we deal with

polarisation and peripheralisation? What are the

challenges for future space-based policies? What new

approaches should be developed to deal with growing

regional imbalances?

The organisers welcome proposals for Special Sessions,

themed workshops and innovative forms of networking

and collaboration.

Submission of abstracts:

Please submit proposals of papers in the form of a 400-500

word abstract (text only, no pictures, graphs or tables)

through the Regional Studies Association online portal by

23rd May 2017. Proposals will be considered by the

Conference Programming Committee against the criteria

of originality, interest and subject balance.

The RSA CEE Conference in Cluj-Napoca welcomes inputs

from researchers, policy-makers and practitioners working

in all areas of regional development. The conference will

offer an excellent opportunity for initiating a

multidisciplinary dialogue on themes such as:

Cohesion Policy

Resilient Communities

Creative Regions/Economies (ITC, Creative Industries)

The Role of Clusters in Local Developmen

Rural Areas Under Pressure (Marginalization & Rural Peripheries/Areas)
