FROM THE PASTOR
My dad was a great teacher. Actually, he
was along the course of his life a farmer, a
WW II draftee, an Army Air Corps Link Trainer
instructor, dry cleaner, hardware store clerk,
school and church custodian, school bus
driver, irrigation system planner and installer,
and a few other things I have forgotten. Dad
did what it took to make sure he provided for
his family. Though he was not officially a
teacher, he managed to show his seven
kiddies how to do a lot of things that needed
to be done; and he taught us how to live, not
by lecturing us (Mom did most of that) but by
inviting us along and living his life and faith
where we could witness his actions.
One of the things Dad taught me was that
you never stop learning in life. Yes, he was set
in his ways (a Dutch characteristic), but not so
planted that he wouldn?t try a new way to
accomplish an important task. Dad lived a
reasonably long life (almost 86 years, almost
64 of which were spent with my mother) and
made the decision to turn off the respirator to
end his earthly sojourn. One thing I know for
sure about Dad: he never stopped learning
and growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ. I?m
happy to say that that characteristic of his was
passed on to his children? to me! I?m still
100% Dutch and can be set in my ways. But I
make it a point to keep my blue eyes and my
big ears open to new lessons and techniques;
and I hope to keep growing as a disciple of
Jesus Christ for as long as the Lord pushes me
down my earthly paths. Friends, disciples of
Jesus never stop growing. Oh, we have growth
spurts and fallow times; but the long-term
trends should always bend toward growth.
Churches, being human organizations,
likewise commit to growth. Of course, that
may mean CHANGE!! We can?t avoid it.
Churches are either growing? or dying.
Churches grow when members in them
commit to growth. We get somewhere along
the way, but we never arrive at the proverbial
there. The learning never stops, however.
Neither does the teaching. Godly people do
both on a daily basis. So whatever
occupational shingle you hang outside your
door, I hope you show two more, at least by
your actions: Learner and Teacher. For Jesus?
sake.
Studiously,
Pastor Z

Revolut ion Youth Take Over Oct. 15 FREE
We are taking over the church. Shhhh...keep it secret.
Costume Party Nov. 1 FREE
Self-explanatory...and really fun. K
Rock the Universe was a bit of an unusual adventure this
year, as it was scheduled to wrap up on the day
Hurricane Irma made landfall. On the downside, the
event was changed from a 3 day mega-event to 1 night.
On the upside, Universal Studios was staffed for 55,000
people, and only a couple thousand were in the park.
After about 5:30, we didn't have to wait in a single line.
The youth rode ride after ride and got the VIP treatment.
What do I mean by VIP treatment? After the third t ime
of riding ?The Mummy,? most of the group's favorite ride,
the youth asked the Universal staff ?Since there is no one
wait ing to ride, can we just go again?? And without
leaving their seats, they got a fourth ride on ?The
Mummy.? LeCrey also helped redefine for the youth
what a Christ ian art ist could do. His high energy, street
savvy Christ ian rap/R&B show was a revelat ion to some.
Some really great bonding took place between the
youth, as well. It was a magical night in many ways. .
Bioluminescence Paddling - God decided that
micro-organisms were gett ing a lit t le boring, so He made
dinoflagellates that, under the right condit ions, glow
when you disturb them. Paddling through a river full of
them is a surreal experience, like something from the
movies ?What Dreams May Come? or ?Avatar.? On Sept.
23, eleven adults from First Presbyterian braved windy
condit ions and the dark of night to try and experience
this for themselves on Merrit t Island. Bioluminscence is
a rather ethereal and myst ical thing to begin with. This
evening was the best bioluminescence even the most
experienced among us have ever seen. In the dark of the
night we could see one another's boats from as far as
40-50 yards away by the light created as we paddled.
The windy condit ions made crest ing waves glow, and
splashes hit t ing seawalls explode in light. Part icipants
were encouraged to sculpt light with their paddles or
scoop up water with their hands and let the glimmers of
light run down their arms. Every t ime the group paddled
into a school of fish, the fish would dart through the
water sett ing off streaks of light, like t iny underwater
fireworks. It was surreal and stunning. All of the
paddlers were in awe of God's creat ive majesty, as
though it were a t iny glimpse of what heaven could be
like. As one paddler said ?So can we come do this again
tomorrow night? I can't get enough of this.? Next
summer, if the condit ions are right, we hope you can join
us for this incredible t ime!
