The chalky, rolling landscapes of the Chilterns are proving a perfect place to cultivate grapes, and wine-making is a thriving local industry with a good number of vineyards and

wineries scattered across the area. Strolling through vines on a sunny hillside and then tasting the finished product is a great way

to experience some of the bounty this beautiful countryside produc-es. Most local vineyards offer tours and tastings, often hosted by the

winemaker, giving you the chance to enjoy their passion and knowledge of wine. Please call ahead or check their website before visiting as some visits must be booked in advance.

Some vineyards offer food as well – why not stay in one of the area’s many charming B&Bs and make a weekend of it?

GETTING TO THE CHILTERNSThe Chilterns has excellent rail links, being served

by four main rail lines and the London Underground

Metropolitan line, with frequent trains and a journey

time of less than an hour from London and

30 minutes from Oxford.

While you are in the area, take time to explore the

elegant Thames-side market town of Marlow with its

excellent range of pubs, fine restaurants and speci-

ality shops. All these attractions are within 6 miles of

Harrow and Hope Vineyard which means less time

travelling, more time enjoying!

Our top tips:

1 Take a stroll from Marlow along the Thames Path

National Trail, past the ornate 19th century suspen-

sion bridge and along the banks of this majestic river.

It’s an easy, level 5½ mile walk to the pretty village of

Cookham, and in summer you can return by boat.

In Cookham the Stanley Spencer Gallery houses an

outstanding collection of the work of this famous

20th century artist.

2 Indulge in a traditional afternoon tea for the

quintessentially English experience. Options include

the Compleat Angler in the heart of riverside Marlow,

Danesfield House Hotel & Spa just outside Marlow

with its sweeping views over the Thames, or the

opulent Cliveden House Hotel on the beautiful

National Trust Estate.

harrow and hope Vineyardharrow and hope is a young vineyard above the Thames near Marlow, estab-

lished by henry and Kaye laithwaite of the well-known wine retailing family.

They are making the most of their chalky, flinty soil to produce sparkling

wines using Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, and aim to

compete with the best produced in France. The wine is made on-site, and

you can book a two hour vineyard tour and tasting to see it all in action and

sample the end result.

3 Visit the magnificent gardens of the National

Trust’s Cliveden House looking over the Thames.

4 Try some great local ales at the Rebellion Brewery

in Marlow Bottom. They have a brewery shop with

a great range of local produce and there are regular

tours and events. Or sample some local specialities at a

country pub. The Royal Oak offers great seasonal food

in a wonderful woodland setting up a twisty country

lane from the hustle and bustle of riverside Marlow.
