• But now let us explain why you should not miss the “patios of Córdoba”.

• In history the “patios of Cordoba” are first mentioned in times of the Romans and Muslims. The Romans were the ones to introduce these patios in Spain and the Muslims took over the idea adapting the courtyards to their own taste.

• Mainly, you can observe two different types of “patios in Córdoba”: The one that is located within a house and where the rooms enclose or surround this “patio” and the second one called “casa de vecinos” – neighbor house in English. In this case the different individual homes look out onto the patio - however, there aren’t very common anymore.

• The courtyards from Córdoba have received lots of different prizes and besides they have been declared World Heritage by the UNESCO. Every year the Cordobeses celebrate a festival where all the patios open their doors and show visitors the hidden beauty of this special piece of Spanish architecture. The May Patio Contest in Córdoba and all the celebrations take place during the first 15 days of May. During these 2 weeks, you will be able to see how the people decorate their houses for these special days. However, you should be aware that you will only see part of the work, which is the decoration and all these beautiful flowers, but what you won’t see is the amount of work the local residents have throughout the year to maintain all these incredibly stunning courtyards.

• They need to cultivate the plants and take care of the garden, they have to plant new species, water them, cut them, arrange them, etc. Moreover, they have to maintain the interior of the patio – the stone mosaics and ceramic decorations which prevail in most of the courtyards in the South of Spain.

• As you can see, the “patios of Córdoba” to the people of Córdoba is much more the only a 2-week celebration or a name on the World Heritage list. To the people involved it means far more than that and they dedicate the entire year to plan their courtyards and implement this plan – often with the help or in teamwork with the neighbors. It is a part of their lives, their history and culture and they want the world to share this heritage with them during the first two weeks of May. And, because of this, these “patios” are open for anyone interested to get to know what is behind the houses and if you would like to visit a place completely different, the courtyards of Córdoba you will surely love.
