What is Tourism ?

• Tourism is temporary, short term movement of people to destinations outside the place of their residence for not more than one year

• Tourism is undertaken for many reasons which can be for recreation, sight seeing, pilgrimage etc.

• Before people can experience tourism they usually need at least: Disposable income Leisure time Tourism infrastructure Other factors such as Health and Motivation to travel

Tourism in India• Tourism is the largest service industry in India, with a contribution of 6.23% to

the national GDP and providing 8.78% of the total employment

• India witnesses more than 5 million annual foreign tourist arrivals and 562 million domestic tourism visits

• Tourism industry in India generated about US$100 billion in 2008 and that is expected to increase to US$275.5 billion by 2018 at a 9.4% annual growth rate

• India known for its lavish treatment to all visitors, its visitor-friendly traditions, varied life styles and cultural heritage and colourful fairs and festivals held abiding attractions for the tourists

• Sustainable tourism has vast scope in India by convergence of landscapes with finance-scapes, techno-scapes and media-scapes

• Medical Tourism is recently mushrooming in India

• Booming IT and Outsourcing Industry is giving a boost to growing number of business trips made by foreigners to India

• The Tourism Industry is helping growth in other sectors as diverse as horticulture, handicrafts, agriculture, construction, poultry and even aviation industry, medical tourism industry and hotel industry

• A new concept 'Rural Tourism' is launched by the Government of India, which is doing very well

• Tourism problems are more common in rural interior of India. Areas such as in Odisha, Bihar are rich in natural beauty, but lack basic infrastructure and accommodations for tourists

• India needs dynamic manpower committed to take up tourism as a career and explore Incredible India as well as make India a safe tourist destination

• Post globalization and under GATS, many changes and challenges are confronted by the tourism industry in India

Conclusion:• Indian tourism has vast potential for generating employment and earning large

sums of foreign exchange

• Survival of tourism industry depends on recognizing the relevant trends and allowing for them in good time

• Development of tourism is a very complex process of interaction among many players, who have shared the responsibility concerning the environmental, social and economic sustainability of this lucrative sector

• Factors contributing as key drivers of tourism are new product offerings, price competitiveness, rich natural/cultural resources and geographical diversity, government initiatives and policy support, multiple marketing and promotion activities, healthy economic growth levels, host nations for major international events and many more
