Historical & Cultural Features

Historical backgound

Historians believe that the earliest people who settled on the island of Panay were

tribal Negritos or Atis. Oral history, related as thelegend of Maragtas, states that in 1212,

ten Malay datus escaped persecution from Sri-Vishaya, a Hindu-Malay empire that existed at

that time in Borneo and Sumatra. These datus, led by Datu Puti, sailed with their families and

communities from Borneo northward and landed on Panay.

There they met the Negrito chieftain Marikudo and his wife Maniwantiwan. They bought the

island from the chieftain for a goldensaduk (headpiece or helmet), and a golden necklace, given

to his wife, among other gifts. The Negritos then retreated to the mountains, while the Borneans

settled in the lowlands. Today, the landing is commemorated every year in Antique during

theBinirayan festival.

The island of Panay was then divided into three sakups (districts). These are Hantik, Aklan,

and Irong-Irong. Aklan became the present-day Aklan and Capiz, Irong-Irong became Iloilo, and

Page 6: Tourism planning process.1

Hantik (also called Hamtik or Hamtic) became Antique. Hantik was named for the large

red ants found on the island called lantik-lantik.

The sakup of Hantik was given to Datu Sumakwel, one of the ten datus, and who, according to

tradition, was the oldest and wisest of them. The three sakups were later governed as a political

unit called the Confederation of Madia-as, also under Datu Sumakwel.

Datu Sumakwel founded the town of Malandog, considered to be the first Malay settlement in

the country. Malandog is now abarangay in the present-day municipality of Hamtic, which was

named after the historic sakup.

In 1942, the Japanese Imperial forces landed in Antique and occupied the province during

the Second World War.

In 1944 to 1945, Philippine Commonwealth forces of the 6th Infantry Regiment of the Philippine

Constabulary and the military units of the Philippine Commonwealth Army together with

recognized local guerrillas defeated the Japanese troops and liberated the province.

Culture of Antiqueǹos

Antiqueños are very hospitable people who would go out of their way to extend assistance to visitors and guests. These seafaring people share many characteristics with their Panay neighbors. However, the steep slopes and the rugged, long mountain ranges of Antique have isolated it from the rest of Panay. Hence, they have developed their own distinct language called Kinaray-a. This dialect is of Austronesianorigins characterized by the predominancy of r’s and schwa sounds spoken with a lilting gentle intonation. The Catholic Church holds a very strong influence on Antiqueños. For centuries, the churches were the physical vanguards of the people. Being a coastal province, and having been vulnerable to attacks by Moro raiders, Antique was guarded by a series of watchtowers, like the ‘Old Watchtower’ in Libertad and Estaca Hill in Bugasong all of which were built under the direction of the Spanish friars. Even today, the Catholic Church remains influential in both the society and politics of the province. However, in the mountains, remnants of ancient folk beliefs persists.Babaylans or native priestesses continue to divine the future, heal the sick or conjure spells. This is an aspect of Antique’s culture that has been subsumed under the Christian religion. The rugged and varied land of Antique offers visitors a variety of outdoor activities. Diving and beach enthusiasts would have a great time discovering the unspoiled islets of Antique. Nogas Island, Hurao-Hurao Island and Mararison Island have long stretches of white sand beaches and are ideal for shell-hunting. Batbatan Island on the other hand, appeals to scuba divers because of the well-preserved coral reefs. Mt. Madia-as, the highest peak on Panay, is a dormant volcano with lakes and 14 waterfalls. It is said to be the legendary home of Bulalakaw, the supreme god of the ancients, and beckons as a challenge for hikers and trekkers.

Themes

Page 7: Tourism planning process.1

The Pre-Spanish natives of Antique had tribal government ruled by chieftains. They traded with neighboring countries like China and Malaya. They had their civilization blended with Negrito, Indonesian and Malay cultures enriched by cultural influence from India, China and Japan. It is believed that the Spaniards found their way to Antique immediately after they established themselves in Oton, Iloilo. The Antiquenos resisted the invasion but in the end accepted Spanish rule, Christianity, the Spanish Colonial System and at the same time absorbed the social, cultural and educational system of the Spaniards.

Communiteis & Sub Communities

People in Antique are called Antiqueňos. Aantiqueňos have developed their own language called kinaray-a

Ethnic Communities

Southwestern Visayans, or Karay-as are the ninth largest Filipino ethnic group. The name of their tribe was derived from the word "iraya", which means "upstream". Karay-as live mainly in the western half of the island of Panay, where mountain ranges predominate. They are also called Hantik, hence the name of their province, Antique. Many of them have intermingled with the lowland Hiligaynons. They engage primarily in farming, fishing, and basketry. About half of the Karay-as are Catholics and the other half are Protestants.

o Region: Antique provinceo Language: Kinaray-a, Hiligaynon, Filipino, English

The Karay-a, are part of the wider Visayan ethnolinguistic group, which constitute the largest Filipino ethnolinguistic group. The name of this group was derived from the word iraya, which means "upstream". Karay-a people speak Kinaray-a language. The term Hamtikanon, is incorrectly substituted to Karay-a, however it pertains to the Karay-a people living in Antique and deals more with location of residence than ethnicity. The Karay-a people live primarily in the province of Antique, but are also numerous in the provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, Romblon, and Aklan, as well as in Palawan.

Moreover, the employment rate of the province in April 2003 was 80.8 percent, a 2.5 percentage points lower than in April 2002.  Likewise this figure was lower than the regional employment (87.5%) by 6.7 percentage points.

However, looking at the labor force participation rate of Antique in April 2003 it did not differ much from the regional rate when both sexes combined are considered.  The proportion of males in the labor force was 1.5 times as large as the female proportion both in the regional and provincial level.  Both rural areas in the province and region contributed a large number of labor force. The unemployment rate in rural areas of Antique was greater than the urban areas in contrast with that of the region when both sexes are likewise considered.

Female labor force participation and unemployment rates were greater in rural areas than those in the urban in Antique.  This did not follow the trend in the regional level since unemployment rates for male and female population was greater in urban than in rural.

Demand

The projected population of Antique in 2013 is 554,099, equivalent to

an additional population of 38,834 from the 2007 census of 515,265. This

increase will need an additional built-up area of 400.76 hectares from the

existing built-up area of 4,476.97 hectares in 2008 or will total to 4,877.73

hectares. This is based on the assumption that the ratio of built-up area to

population is 0.0086 hectares/person and a including 20% allowance for

expansion.

Meanwhile, the area requirement for palay production is estimated

based on the total rice demand of the total projected population in 2013. The

daily grain per rice requirement per day per capita is 286.6 grams or

equivalent to 104.609 kgs per year per capita. Based on this figure, the total

rice demand of Antique in 2013 is 57,963.74 metric tons of clean rice. The

area of land requirement is computed from the area of land for food demand

plus buffer stock and wastage or equivalent to 17,545.92 hectares. On the

other hand, an additional of 1,069.48 hectares is needed for area requirement

for seeds or a total of 18,615.84 hectares. The total irrigated and irrigable

land of Antique is 20,844 hectares and rainfed is 22,814 hectares.
