Tourism Experience Guide 54 Haldimand County
Cayuga
Incorporated as a village within Haldimand County in 1853, Caledonia’s Scottish beginnings are remembered a century and a half later.
Caledonia is a picturesque community on the Canadian Heritage Grand River, just 15 minutes south of Hamilton and less than 10 minutes from the Hamilton International Airport.
A nine-span bridge, the only one of its type in Canada, links the whole community. Historic sites include the scenic Old Mill, just west of the bridge; the Town Hall, built in 1857; and the 100-year old Grand Trunk Railway Station, built in 1908. The Old Mill reminds residents and visitors of early Caledonia development. The old Town Hall, known as Edinburgh Square Heritage and Cultural Centre, preserves and profiles the history of the community. The renovated Railway Station is open on a daily basis as a museum, office of the Caledonia Regional Chamber of Commerce and Travel Information Centre.
Caledonia’s parks and green spaces provide a place to enjoy a range of sports: fishing, camping, walking, swimming, picnicking and bird watching. A walk along the old Towpath from the bridge to the dam is a highlight and a tangible reminder of the river’s navigation heyday. The railway bridge, once a wooden trestle, converted to iron in 1886 and later to the solid deck bridge, is still in use today, enhancing the park scene.
Caledonia
Cayuga is located on the banks of the Grand River between Caledonia and Dunnville. The town of Cayuga offers unique shopping and dining opportunities, access to the Grand River, beautiful parks and many events for the whole family.
While visiting Cayuga, be sure to enjoy a picnic in the pavilion next to the river or take a relaxing stroll along the river’s edge. Boating and other water sports draw visitors to this area year after year. Boaters can launch from the public boat ramp on the river located in the park beside the bridge.
Hagersville
Hagersville is a lovely, small urban community found along Highway #6. Hagersville maintains a relaxed and small community-oriented atmosphere.
The history of Hagersville is preserved in many of the older, well-kept homes and commercial buildings, such as the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Building.
The heart of the community is the Hagersville Farmers’ Market (founded in 1892). The market runs regularly on Wednesday mornings April – October. The local urban community is surrounded by prime agriculture land, creating an abundant supply of fruits, vegetables, flowers and even baked goods at the market. The warmth and friendliness of Hagersville is witnessed every day, but especially on Market Day when farm and community come together.
Tourism Experience Guide 76 Haldimand County
Dunnville
Dunnville is a picturesque community located along the Grand River on Highway #3, between the Niagara and Hamilton regions, and less than an hour away from the U.S. border. A friendly welcome awaits you in the relaxed atmosphere of the downtown Dunnville business section. Spacious streets feature rustic coach light lanterns and many planters overflowing with flowers, welcoming you to browse through the unique shops and restaurants.
There are many events and natural attractions. In June, the annual Mudcat Festival is held to celebrate one of the Grand River’s most well-known inhabitants. The festival includes a parade, strongman contests, midway, fireworks and more. Another popular event is the Dunnville Agricultural Fair, held in late August, which includes heavy, light and miniature horse shows, sheep and goat shows and much more.
The Dunnville Airport was built to house the No. 6 RCAF Service Flying Training School (SFTS) for World War II pilots. While the airport is no longer open to flight operations, the history of the No. 6 SFTS is preserved in a unique museum located in one of the massive hangars constructed for the school.
Dunnville has tennis, golf, lawn bowling and swimming facilities and many Bed & Breakfasts to stay in while enjoying these activities. Tuesdays and Saturdays are Farmers’ Market days.
The Grand River and nearby Port Maitland on Lake Erie offer a host of aquatic activities, from swimming, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and features prime locations for fishing.

Townsend
A quiet community just north of Highway 3, Townsend was originally conceived in the 1970’s as a planned community.
Townsend features some stunning scenery with Nanticoke Creek flowing through the community and a pond (complete with boat dock) at the village centre.
Tennis courts, ball diamonds, skateboard facility, playground and the Townsend recreational trail are highlights of the community. The paved trail offers 13.6 kilometres (8 1/2 miles) of scenic hiking, cross-country skiing and bird watching.
Strategically located at the crossroads of Highways 3 and 6, Jarvis is a quiet community featuring some intriguing brick architecture. Many of the community’s historic homes were built after a devastating fire in 1873.
Jarvis has many shops, stores and businesses for you to visit. Among them are restaurants, a butcher and bakery, convenience stores, car dealership, florists, home decor and much more. The Walpole Antique Farm Machinery Association is open to the public to learn about the area’s agricultural heritage. The Association holds many events throughout the year to sustain and promote their purpose.
Jarvis Selkirk, Fisherville and Area
Come to the quaint little town of Selkirk - a village with a history by the lake. You and your family can enjoy a stay at a nearby campground or relax in a charming Bed and Breakfast.
Swim or relax on Lake Erie’s sunny shores. Take a hike on one of our nature trails, or enjoy a leisurely stroll along Lake Erie or Stoney Creek. Selkirk is a bird watcher’s paradise. Visit the unique shops for anything you need: handmade items, antiques and collectibles, or building materials. Don’t miss the murals on the town’s main corners.
For nature lovers, Selkirk Provincial Park has excellent camping and picnicking facilities. The park borders Lake Erie, well known for its sport fishing. Docking facilities and boat launches are located nearby.
The Selkirk area is home to the heritage attractions of Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum, an 1872 red brick Schoolhouse, the Canadian Drilling Rig Museum and Cottonwood Mansion, a 19th Century red brick structure open for guided tours.

Port Maitland & Lake erie BeachesDiscover Ontario’s South Coast and soak up the sun at the beach and enjoy warm water temperatures in Lake Erie.
Grand RiverExplore the Grand River by canoe, kayak, power boat or along the Rotary Riverside Trail. Much of the Grand’s valley in Haldimand remains in a natural state with rare Carolinian species of flora and fauna lining the shore and broad
marshes found near the river’s mouth. With 82 species of fish in the Grand River watershed and 50 per cent of all the fish species found in Canada, it makes for a prime fishing location.
Fishing, Boating & PaddlingThe Grand River, from the dam in Caledonia to the mouth at Lake Erie, is home to a variety of fish. The spring, summer and fall host some of the best fishing around, with Trout, Salmon and Pickerel running from Lake Erie. In the river find plenty of Bass, Channel Catfish and resident Pickerel, making the Grand River a good spot throughout the year. Water depths in the lower Grand River can accommodate power boats and public boat launches are available north of the dam in Caledonia, Cayuga, south of the dam in Dunnville, and Port Maitland. You can also find boat launches and marinas along the Lake Erie shoreline.
Grand AttractionsCycling Haldimand County has many opportunities for cyclists. Pick up the Official Haldimand County Cycling Map that highlights suggested on-road routes with turn-by-turn directions. Routes outlined on the map are signed with Share the Road signage. Enjoy the view of the lake along the Lake Erie Cycling Route, which is part of the 1400 km Waterfront Trail. Experience the 6km Rotary Riverside Trail from Caledonia to York, or the 2.7 km Chippewa Trail (part of the Trans Canada Trail system) that connects cyclists to Hamilton.
BirdingHaldimand County is the perfect place to work on your birding checklist. Haldimand County is located within the Carolinian Life Zone. In Canada this is found only in southern Ontario within a relatively small band of territory along the northern shore of Lake Erie. The Carolinian Life Zone contains many species and communities of plants and animals found nowhere else in Canada. The Haldimand County Birding Map has information on birding hot spots and different species found here.
Mohawk Island is a protected National Wildlife Area for the waterfowl and shorebirds that use the island to nest and rest between migrating seasons. Access to the island has restrictions but it can be viewed from the shore of Rock Point Provincial Park and the Highbanks area or visible by boat and canoe/kayak.
