the 14 rooms of exhibits on the three levels of this 102 year old home, turned boarding house, turned

museum in 1986. � e Staff House now provides a safe repository for artifacts of historical

Scheff y’s General Store, opened in 1992 and is owned and operated by Ben and Melissa Scheff elmaier. � e building was part of the original railroad community built in the early 1900’s and housed the dignitaries of the Milwaukee Railroad when they visited Avery. � e Scheff y’s Motel building was also part of the original railroad buildings and were commonly referred to as the railroad fl ats and housed the workers of the Milwaukee Railroad. � e motel units now are large two bedroom units with a double bed in each bedroom and 2 twin beds in the front rooms plus full kitchens with dishes, television and air conditioning. � e motel units are large enough for the whole family, or two couples that would like to share expenses.

Scheff y’s Fire Pit is a game and rec. room with a pool table. It is a great spot to relax and visit and meet new friends. � e cooking facilities and BBQ’s are available for use by Scheff y’s Motel guests. Scheff y’s sells gas, diesel and propane. As well as a full line of groceries, cold beverages, ice and hot deli food. Fishing, camping and hunting supplies are also available as well as a meat cooler for hanging wild game. Scheff y’s also has a laundromat and shower house for hunters and campers. Scheff y’s is a licensed vendor for: Idaho Fish & Game licenses and tags • Parks & Rec Snowmobile & OHV stickers • Shoshone County Groomer Stickers and Route of the Hiawatha Bike Trail tickets. Scheff y’s also owns and operates a Tucker snow groomer for grooming snowmobile trails. � ere are 200 miles of groomed trails in the St. Joe area. Scheff y’s groomer is a part of the Shoshone Groomer program and Avery is designated as “Use Area 40-B” for state registration.

For the outdoors man or woman in North Idaho, all roads lead to Avery and Calder. For the snowmobiler this is heaven. Hundreds of miles of trails, lots of groomed trails, easy access and services in Wallace, Avery and even St. Regis in Montana. Not just the scenic St. Joe River road, or the exciting Moon Pass route between Wallace and Avery, but the roads and trails of some of the best ATV and snowmobiling in the Northwest. In the summer it’s blue ribbon trout fi shing, boating, fl oating, cross country skiing, hiking and camping – all right here in this beautiful part of North Idaho. And the snowmobile friendly communities of Avery and Wallace will make you feel welcome.

Less than 50 miles up the St. Joe Scenic Route is fi rst Calder then Avery and it is just another 58 miles over the pass to St. Regis, Montana. A comfortable drive with lots to see. In the winter much of this network of roads and trails around the upper St. Joe, is groomed for snowmobiles. Just outside of Avery the road is actually the old railroad grade with 7 exciting single lane tunnels to maneuver. For the cycling enthusiast, the Pearson trail head of the Route of the Hiawatha is just 9 miles north of Avery. � e history buff s will appreciate the old railroad depot, now community center, old jail, and community fi sh pond stocked with rainbow trout. Not to mention the railroading and forest service history of the old, still in use, buildings in Avery. Which, by the way, did not burn in the 1910 fi re.

Take off from Avery this winter and snowmobile right into downtown Wallace for Lunch, or spend the night. � en it a beautiful scenic ride back to Avery, to share your most exciting adventure stories around the fi re pit. You will have no doubt this area of North Idaho is the perfect spot from which to launch some of the best adventures of your life.
