Get ready to explore fabulous Design, Technology & Engineering – right in the heart of

the UK. Join us on this exciting, enlightening trip which is sure to motivate your students and reinforce their quest for knowledge.

British automotive marques are an extension of the nation’s class system and style. Whether conjuring the leather armchairs and wood paneling of a

gentleman’s club or the naked mechanicals of a locomotive, they echo the singular, manic ambitions of the engineers who realized their dreams –

however remote or eccentric these may have been.

Rare is the British car built with the mass market in mind, and that tendency

has had lasting effects; vehicles produced in high volumes in today’s UK all carry the names of foreign automakers. But, that singularity has left the

world a trove of emphatically British cars that demand reverence. Here are cars well worth celebrating.

- Martyn Goddard, BBC

Day 1 Dinner

Visions groups will be picked up at their school, boarding their motorcoach and departing for Norfolk, a low-lying, rural county in the East of England, home to the Broads National Park. Groups will meet their Visions Ambassador and go through a full Health & Safety Briefing on arrival. Dinner this evening will be in our hotel, followed by a movie night.

Day 2 Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner

Rise and shine Norfolk! Today is a day to delve into Design! After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll pick up our packed lunch, check-out of our hotel, and head off for the first brilliant tour – the Lotus factory located in Hethel!

Page 3: Tour: British Automobile Design & Tech Tour - Sample Itinerary

Lotus Cars - Lotus is a British sports and racing car manufacturer famed for its Esprit, Elan,

Europa and Elise models. The company also boasts a highly successful Formula 1 team, Team Lotus.

“Defining Lotus is one of the simplest things in the world. Everything we do revolves around reaching the lowest common denominators of lightness, allied to strength but created with simplicity in mind.

The company ethos revolves around enhancement, refinement and accessibility. If these elements can be determined as natural, livable and viable, then a Lotus product results. Whether you are looking at the motorcars that are produced at our home factory in Norfolk, or the advanced engineering that has been commissioned by the international clients of Lotus, over the years, a pure and simple outcome is invariably the prerequisite and always what we deliver.

Of course, you will describe us in many ways. From cool and collected, to racy and radical. However, you, as people who are smart, witty, intelligent and single-minded, define us. Those are the qualities that have formed Lotus, right from its earliest days in Colin Chapman’s North London lockup, to its current status, as one of the world’s most highly regarded and famous sportscar brands.

British to the core, despite its history, we do not waste time reflecting in the past of Lotus. We maintain passionately the lightness of being that is central to all that we carry out. Whether you look at a lotus blossom, or partake of the lotus position, you can draw parallels with us. Our agility and flexibility, lack of compromise, sense of purpose, style and technological stance are all ring-fenced by a sense of levity. You love us and we love what we do. That is Lotus. Purposeful and simple.”

Today we’ll enjoy a private 2-hour tour of the Lotus factory. Your tour will include an introduction to Lotus, the chassis assembly station, body bonding, paint overview, final assembly, quality check and the historic workshops of Classic Lotus.

After your tour you will enjoy an exclusive 1-hour private workshop with a Lotus engineer who will describe their experience with Lotus and how they came to be in the privileged position of working on such impressive and beautiful machines.

Page 4: Tour: British Automobile Design & Tech Tour - Sample Itinerary

“When you visit our history-charged manufacturing facility at Hethel, Norfolk UK, you'll explore the epicenter of Lotus life, where our world class, high performance sports cars are all individually hand built.

No two tours are ever really the same at the Lotus factory, where precision manufacturing is beautifully combined with innovative engineering. Discover the history and heritage of Lotus as you follow each step in the creation of our magnificent machines and take a walk through the years that saw the company develop from a shed-based one-man operation into the automotive thoroughbred it is today, and the exciting prospects that are just around the corner.”

After our time at Lotus, we’ll enjoy our packed lunch and then we’re off to the Imperial War Museum Duxford, approximately a 1.5-hour drive.

Imperial War Museum Duxford – explore Britain's best-preserved Second World

War airfield. The site is a blend of historic buildings and modern exhibition spaces showcasing a fine collection of tanks, military vehicles and artillery. Explore atmospheric exhibitions and discover historic objects. The museum is set within the historic former RAF fighter station, where you can learn about Duxford’s role in the First World War, Second World War and the Cold War. IWM Duxford is home to an impressive collection of over two hundred aircraft and maritime craft. Included in your visit is a 1-hour exclusive workshop with a military vehicle expert in the Land Warfare exhibition covering the development of military vehicle engineering.

Afterwards, we’ll re-board our coach and continue to your hotel; approximately a 2-hour ride to the Solihull area. Upon arrival we’ll check-in to our rooms, have a group dinner and then test our knowledge with a Quiz Night!

Day 3 Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner

Good morning Solihull! After a continental breakfast at our hotel, we’re off to visit Jaguar Land Rover!

Page 5: Tour: British Automobile Design & Tech Tour - Sample Itinerary

Jaguar Land Rover - This morning you will enjoy an exclusive 2.5-hour guided tour of the

Jaguar Land Rover factory. Jaguar Land Rover is a British multinational automotive company with a long and complex history producing a range of vehicles including sports cars, luxury cars and off-road vehicles. Witness the entire production process from sheet metal through to the completed car.

Jaguar Land Rover is the UK’s largest automotive manufacturing business, built around two iconic British car brands: Land Rover, the world’s leading manufacturer of premium all-terrain vehicles and Jaguar, one of the world’s premier luxury sports saloon and sports car marques. Under the ownership of Tata Motors Limited, Jaguar Land Rover is transforming its business to realize the full potential of its brands and deliver profitable results. Driving the business is a world-class team of 32,000 people globally. In addition, we support more than 210,000 UK jobs through the supply chain, dealer network and wider economy. All of our cars are engineered and designed in Britain and while we have ambitious plans for global growth, the heart of the business remains in the UK. We have invested billions of pounds in our state-of-the-art production, research and development facilities. In fact, Jaguar Land Rover is the biggest UK investor in R&D in the manufacturing sector – ahead of British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce – and in the global top 100 for R&D spend. This investment, along with our on-going support of local communities and encouragement to get young people to seek jobs in engineering has led to Jaguar Land Rover winning the Responsible Business of the Year Award – an accolade we take great pride in achieving.

After our guided tour we’ll enjoy our packaged lunch and then get ready to spend approximately 1.5 hours completing a number of engineering activities designed especially for you by the Jaguar Land Rover team. Afterwards, we’ll also have a private 1-hour Master Class with a Jaguar Land Rover engineer who will answer all of our questions about becoming an engineer with one of the most successful motor vehicle companies in the world.

INTRODUCING YOUNG PEOPLE TO THE WORLD OF ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING

We’re dedicated to equipping the next generation of engineers with the means and skills to deliver a new wave of innovation. Our award-winning Inspiring Tomorrow’s Engineers education program encourages young people to study STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects and promotes engineering careers. In addition, we have opportunities for the next generation of talented young people to join Jaguar Land Rover through our Apprentice Program, undergraduate placements and our Graduate Development Program. Jaguar Land Rover's Education Business Partnership Centers introduce young people to the world of work and encourage them to pursue engineering and manufacturing careers. The centers provide learning facilities and resources for children from primary school age to 18+. EBPCs aim to raise attainment, improve employability skills and showcase cutting edge manufacturing to inspire young people to consider engineering careers.

Groups of school students visit the centers with their teachers to learn about engineering, manufacturing and automotive business-related activities linked to the national curriculum. The EBPCs run a range of programs to encourage more young people to pursue engineering careers including a successful ‘Young Women in the Know’ courses for GCSE and A-Level students which includes classroom activities, work placements, plant tours and networking opportunities with successful female apprentices, graduates and managers. Over 21,500 young people and 2,300 teachers visited our centers in 2013. Last year, we won the Business in the Community National Education Award and Work Inspiration Award which recognize the positive impact we are having on STEM education and careers awareness.

This evening we’ll have a group dinner and it’s off to an evening of bowling!

Day 4 Breakfast & Packed Lunch

Rise and shine Solihull! Today is our last day and we’re set up to make it great! Following a continental breakfast at our hotel, we’ll check out of our hotel and set off for the Coventry Transport Museum.

Page 7: Tour: British Automobile Design & Tech Tour - Sample Itinerary

The Coventry Transport Museum - Located in the town that was once the

center of British car manufacturing, the museum houses the largest collection of British transport vehicles in the world including 240 cars, 100 motorcycles and 200 bicycles.

In the heart of Coventry city center, this huge Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of British road transport, and a visit whisks you away into a world of stories of real people, real passions and real hope.

You’ll discover the stories behind the people who made Coventry the center of the world’s motor and cycle industries and get up close and personal with the actual vehicles that defined some of history’s most important moments. The Museum is laid out as a journey through time – you’ll wander 19th Century streets and discover the first bicycles, carriages and cars, then explore the first car factories and gasp as you witness their wartime destruction in the Blitz Experience. The journey continues through the Boomtown, Spirit of Speed and Ghost Town galleries to bring you right up to the present day.

A visit to the Museum brings you face to face with Royal cars, military vehicles, and cars that played vital parts in their drivers’ life stories – none more so than the current Land Speed Record holding vehicle, ThrustSSC, which lives at the Museum. Not only can you marvel at this spectacular piece of British engineering, you can experience for yourself what it’s like to travel through the sound barrier at over 760mph in the ThrustSSC Simulator.

After a visit to the museum, including a ride on the exciting Thrust SSC Land Speed Record simulator, your school group will enjoy a 1.5-hour Practical Motor-Design Master Class created especially for you. Afterwards, we’ll have our packed lunches while at the museum and then continue our journey, arriving at the Morgan Motor Company.

The Morgan Motor Company – For over 100 years the Morgan Motor Company

have been making exciting sports cars in the beautiful spa town of Malvern. Morgan cars are famous the world over for their unique blend of charisma, quality materials, craftsmanship and performance. Equally at home on the race track or the open road, there is nothing quite like a Morgan. Experience the passion for yourself with a factory tour and a trip to the on-site museum. The Morgan Motor Company Ltd. was established in 1909 by H.F.S. Morgan with the design of the Morgan three-wheeler. A four-wheeled model began production in 1936, and Morgan cars have long

Page 8: Tour: British Automobile Design & Tech Tour - Sample Itinerary

become famous the world over for their unique blend of charisma, quality materials, craftsmanship and performance. The ethos at Morgan remains unchanged: all cars are coach built and subjected to continual development in order to meet current standards of safety and to offer the responsive thoroughbred performance with which our name is associated. The development of then model-range has taken the marque into the 21st Century, and today Morgan builds in excess of 1300 cars per year. The Aero 8, a major achievement for a small Company, was launched in 2000, and continual evolution of the Aero Range has seen the 8 joined by the dramatic Aero SuperSports and its fixed-head sibling, the Aero Coupe. In 2011 Morgan re-launched the Morgan 3-Wheeler, a modern interpretation of H.F.S. Morgan’s classic design. The ‘Classic’ range continues to be the flagship vehicle – with models including the 4/4, the world’s longest-running production vehicle, and engine sizes ranging from 1600cc to 4800cc, these famous icons are the models perhaps most associated with Morgan. Morgan as a brand is best expressed through 5 key messages:

• The last remaining family-owned, independent, innovative British motor manufacturer.

• Each car, and the way in which it is built, is very environmentally friendly.

• The latest cutting-edge technology is utilized in both design process and product.

• The highest standards of craftsmanship.

• We are driven at heart.

MORGAN CRAFTSMANSHIP: The Pickersleigh Road site from where Morgans have been built since 1914, is itself built into the foothills of the Malverns. The staggered floor layout sends each car down the natural slope of the hill as it passes through each stage of the manufacturing process. Every Morgan is expertly crafted using three core elements: ash, aluminum and leather. Designed to work in harmony with its construction materials, natural properties are respected to deliver a higher quality of vehicle. By pushing the boundaries of how long established techniques can be applied, each Morgan car celebrates traditional manufacture while embracing modern design. MORGAN DESIGN & ENGINEERING: Morgan’s in-house Research and Design department develop new vehicles from conception to production. Designed for efficient manufacture, the charms of a handmade car are retained. Global standards and approval requirements impose great challenges upon the design of new vehicles. Coach-building vehicles is by nature a meticulous and time-consuming practice. Design efficiency is enhanced with industry standard technology and software. Each new

Page 9: Tour: British Automobile Design & Tech Tour - Sample Itinerary

vehicle is exposed to rigorous digital simulation and extensive physical testing. These practices are also applied to the evolution of existing models. The engineers and designers at Morgan work closely with their dealers and customers. Close contact with the ‘front line’ allows the development team to receive first hand owner feedback. This inspires relevant and exciting design solutions.

After your guided tour you will have time to browse the on-site museum. Afterwards, it’s time to head home. Hopefully taking memories and inspiration with us that will inspire us to reach new goals and step up to new lifetime challenges!
