A newer focus is the physical health benefits. In 2013, Carnegie Mellon University researchers looked specifically at the relationship between volunteerism and lower blood pressure. They discovered that as little as 200 hours of volunteering annually showed a dramatic lowering of blood pressure. ...”

The couple say they chose Touchmark for two reasons: It offered the best value for the money and is close to the kids. “We had been looking in Southern California for over four years and hadn’t found anything close to the quality and affordability offered by Touchmark,” says Sheila. “We had quite a few options—our choices included a variety of retirement options, including apartments, cottages, and CCRCs. Since we recently downsized, we chose a cottage—it is beautifully updated and just right for us.”

Before retiring, Vern was an accountant for Los Angeles County, and Sheila worked as a church secretary for the Christian Reformed Church. They aren’t quite used to the snow. “It’s still a novelty,” says Vern. “Sheila and I haven’t really had a chance to explore the area yet because of the weather. I look forward to finding some fishing buddies and getting to know the lakes and streams around here,” he adds.

Now Vern will just have to find time in the couple’s already full days to schedule those fishing outings!
