Editor’s Note

G’day all.

As you may or may not have noticed November has

been a pivotal month for the club (even though quite

possibly the greatest ever event in Central Victorian

Motorsport History technically occurred on the 31st of

October) so to celebrate this huge occasion I present

to you the “Gift Horse Rides” Celebratory Collectable

Issue. So collectable in fact it will be limited to one online copy but for a fee I’ll be happy to run

off some prints of the front cover so anyone interested can hang them on their wall. Many

years from now when you tell your grandchildren this story you can point to your poster and

tell ‘em, “I was THERE.”

Gone far enough yet? Yeah, I think so. Anyway, besides the obvious we had the November

Test and Tune on the 31st of October which went OFF and Cerberus Car Club ran VCAS Rd 11 at

our track November 1st until the weather intervened.

Results for the Club Championship have been finalised with our final Test and Tune for the year

coming up in December being for fits and giggles only, and maybe some shakedown runs for

those of us planning to have a crack next year… Congrats to all our winners and any

incriminating details from the Xmas Party/Presentation Night will

come out in the December issue. In the meantime, here’s the

Race Report and some pics of some other stuff that happened…

Race Report, Melbourne Cup Weekend

Saturday October 31st& Sunday November 1st 2015

Well we had it all really, sun, wind, rain, flies, dust, mud and an

awesome weekend.

Saturday saw a great turn out of people with some 38 entries and 33 passengers and that was a new stat

to me. I thought it was impressive as this is where people get a firsthand look at what we do. Speaking

of stats how is this one, 418 cars were

started. Man that is impressive. We only

started racing at 1.00 pm, stopped at 3.30 for

a break, started again at 4.00 pm and had all

but worn the field out by 6.20 pm with no

dramas to speak of. Getting back to the 418

starts, x 2 = 836 and that is Kms my friends.

Now would you think that a poor old dirt

track would handle 836 Kms of every starter

trying to destroy it and still be in pretty good

nick for Round 11 VCAS the next day? The

track just laughed at us and said “is that all

you got?” and we just whimpered and said,

“yes.”

Neil Albert and myself were both Club Chiefs on the day as we both have brand new shiny officials’

tickets. I think we did the job with ease. We both got to race, just not against each other (we only race

the clock don’t we Neil?) He showed me a big black mark on his bumper and said it was from the last

time we did.

The big news of the day really had to be the Gift Horse - Robert Goff, car 308. While he did end up with

some very respectable times he finished every lap and did not have to be towed at all!!! For those of

you who have followed the Gift Horse journey this was a big development.

The Holy Sh__ part of the day would have to be

Jobbo - Kelvin Jobling - coming off the track at

full noise, back sweeper, inside lane. Drove

straight off the corner, around the back of it

and back on, actually left the ground for at

least 8 metres.

New pants should have been required as that part of the track is fast; for a normal person 50k,

adventurous 60K, aggressive 70K, borderline nuts 80K and anything over that, either very good, lucky or

crash....................

(Dreamtime coming up – CG)

.........this all begins after coming up from the start, you have just nailed it off the line, grabbed 2nd and

most likely your right foot is still trying to bend the floor. Hold onto it as you take that first slight left

turn bringing you back onto the original track, the twisty left and right (there was some pedal and wheel

work as well, but you need to work that out) then you get a breath – but it’s not much of a breath, the

car is still sliding - then left again, you are starting to feel like a ball in a bag, swish right again and then

here it comes, the hairpin to the left from where the trouble begins.

Hey, but don’t be fooled kids, you can throw it off the track anywhere!

Nail it nicely, slide all the way round just using the throttle enough not to go off to the right or

overcorrect it and spin, but there is a right hander now. You come round, almost get straight and think

what the hell, flat out! The floor is bending, change up to third, foot still bending the floor and hang on.

It starts trying to throw you off the bend, a big sweeping left hander that seems to go forever, it is

banked and all the way round the faster you go the more the back of the car is trying to pass you drifting

up the bank. Oh, and if you think now would be a good time to slow you would be wrong because here

comes the back of the car; the time for slowing has passed. Only two choices now, make the sharp left

(using speed table above to describe yourself) or use a large amount of brake and try to retake control

because about now you no longer have any. No

matter which one you chose you’ll know

you’re alive, for sure your heart rate will

tell you! By now you are either thinking

“how good was that”

or “I will just do

something different

next time”. But stop

dreaming, there is still

over ½ a lap to go yet

and I bet you are still

trying to bend the

floor. Sorry, got a bit

carried away there…

Back to the day, Jobbo did get a lot of runs in and managed some very quick times.

The North family brought along a new weapon, sorry Neil Albert but it was a Lancer EVO 1. To make

Neil happy they also brought along a Hyundai but that Lancer was quick. The thing just jumped off the

line and was five car lengths in front of you before you could get traction, a very nice car to watch. Well

done Richard, you made it look easy. Andrew Murdoch was the one on the day and you know it is neat

when all you could report is dust.

I was able to pull quickest 2 wheel drive but only just, as Robert Field

in that Nissan Bluebird was giving it one hell of crack. And man, for a

2 wheel drive it got the power to ground and took off from the line

very well. I speak from “the lane next to him perspective”, I would

have thought almost as good as the EVO.

One car that really stood out was Brian

Newton is his Honda Civic. That car not

only looked great in the white and yellow

paint job but man the sound it made

going around the track was just fantastic

and he also was very quick.

Resident Class D bandit Darby Anderson

had the goods again with another class

lead. I am calling him a bandit because I

had not really noticed that he had taken

that class so many times during the year,

and after working on club points the light was shining on Darby very brightly. Well done Darby. He has

done a great job on the little things with his car and not said much about it at all.

Page 6: Totally gratuitous I know but Im the Editor so whatcha ... 2015...Totally gratuitous I know but Im the Editor so whatcha gonna do..?! Editor’s Note Gday all. As you may or may not

Father and son Shane and Blair Clue also got to battle it out for several laps side by side and watching

them coming over the finish line you needed the computer to know who got who, they were so close.

Great to watch.

Steven Barr was sharing with Barry Middleton in Barrys’ Lancer. He was going very well, in fact even

coming in ahead of Jack Hawkins in his Hyundai and Jack was very quick all weekend. I would not be

surprised if Jack did the most

laps for the whole weekend

and congrats Jack you are 2015

Junior Champ.

Mr Dust (Adam

Smith) found that

road tyres on the

back do not hook up

as well as rally tyres

but he kept burning

the rubber off them

while still managing

to have a great

weekend. He did

live up to his name.

Page 7: Totally gratuitous I know but Im the Editor so whatcha ... 2015...Totally gratuitous I know but Im the Editor so whatcha gonna do..?! Editor’s Note Gday all. As you may or may not

Neil Albert managed a great

day and passed points leader

for Class P Rodney Stevenson,

who was at 71 points and Neil

70 coming into this round.

With his times slowly

improving all day he would

have been smiling at the end.

Reg Johnson also had a

great weekend and did an

awesome job in his Holden

Nova. Very good to watch.

Glen and Anita King-Gee

had two cars out, Glen in

the yellow Lancer and Anita

in the silver Coupe. Both

had a ball, doing a large

number of runs with Glen

Class P winner and Anita very happy to be pulling her times down. I went with her for a few laps and

she is not afraid to have a go. For her second time out, one hell of an improvement. Good job Anita and

look out Glen.

But the ones that put on the best show were

the boys from Shepparton in the Toyota

Celica, James Thompson, Justin Aylett and

James Thomson.

I hope that was right and not a typo but that car, they give it heaps all day and apart from pushing a tyre

off, it took it. It would also have to have won the award for the most body roll and most likely from

inside the car, most fun. Was great to see, just sorry I did not get the chance to talk to you guys on the

day.

A BIG THANK YOU to Coburns Earthmoving. Gary Saville gave up his time and truck to help us out

with the water, which even though we got rained out on the weekend we needed it until that happened.

Everybody below deserves a mention, all did great things and I hope had a good time. I know I did.

Sunday 1st of November

VCAS Round 11 run by Cerberus Car Club at Swan Hill

Twenty eight competitors took part in the Sunday event with entries from around the state, 8 of those

from Swan Hill. We did not do too badly, I managed a win in Class E and 4th overall, Steve Barr won Class

J and 12th overall and Glen King-Gee winning Class P and 20th overall, not a bad day for the Swan Hill

Club.

With 179 car starts, the day got underway at 10 am no problems and by 12.30 almost all had done the 4

runs required to score. Then a lunch break with after lunch being declared a “just go for it” session,

after everyone had done their laps 1, 2, 3 and 4. But the big fella upstairs decided that he would make

it rain and it bucketed down for a short time. Lunch was done,

so out they went in nice clean cars and back they came

50KGs heavier and covered in mud. But the drivers seemed

to love it. Just as the track was drying out, down she came

again but this time there was just no control. It looked

like that day a few years back when James Courtney

won the V8 Supercar championship in the rain in

Sydney where there were cars going off

everywhere, and the day was done.

Now the sad case of the day, the Nissan of Rob and Greg Field bent a shock and by the time it was fixed

the day had just closed down with the rain. Geoff had only come up Sunday and did not even get a drive

at all.

Page 10: Totally gratuitous I know but Im the Editor so whatcha ... 2015...Totally gratuitous I know but Im the Editor so whatcha gonna do..?! Editor’s Note Gday all. As you may or may not

Sorry I am a bit light on for info here as I did not see much. For me the day was: one lap, park the car as

I thought I needed some fuel, go get some tools for the Fields in the hope of getting them going, have a

chat around the pits, look at the time and it’s 12 something. The call comes over the PA, “if you have

not done your 4 laps yet, do them now”, so went out and blasted 3 more laps, one after the other.

Almost not too dissimilar to the description in Saturdays story, parked the car, huge grin!!! The track

had some major black spots on it and that was that, well done to Cerberus Car Club for the day.

You know the amazing thing was the track should have been trashed with the wet but on inspection the

day after I have to say it looks pretty good, there are still some big puddles but they will be gone by

December 13th . After a six week break I could be getting mighty twitchy, how about you??

Well done and thank you to all that helped on the weekend and the week leading up to it. I was quite

amazed at how many helped, and performed in roles they have not done before. It all went so well. We

seemed to do it easy. Great work, great Club.

The bloke with his back to you can give

plenty of pointers regarding coming into

a corner too hot… eh, Jobbo..?

Tips and Tricks

We got to see a couple of tyres off the rim this weekend.

Tubes are cheap insurance.

Now driving into a corner, if you come in too hot the car is

going to go all over the place when you try and exit the corner

(I can vouch for this – Ed). While you may hang onto it and get

round the result is not that tidy or quick. But if you slow before

entry and then gently bring the throttle back on you can start

to use some of that car control you have been losing from

coming in too fast.

Also do not be afraid to go up to any driver you think could help you and ask either to go for a lap with

them or for them to go for one with you; you could be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Editors’ Note 2.0

Now all the formalities are done, I can announce

the formation for next year of the Gift Horse

Racing team!!! Yes, hot on the heels of the

Original Gift Horses’ slightly-less-than-stellar debut

comes Gift Horse 2 – Moooovin’ Along (this name

was NOT my idea – Ed). In keeping with GHRs’

tighter-than-a-fishes-butt tradition GH2 also came

to us for very, very little – like nothing – therefore

we can’t lose. Mrs Ed has laid claim to a late ‘80s

FWD Celica – only just off the road, quite a little

goer if you can look past the fact it’s driven from

the wrong end by a motor with half the correct

amount of pots. Only time will tell if her right foot

can keep up with her mouth… …STAY TUNED

Licence Structure and Pathway

The Licensing and Accreditation Guide is a reference guide for new and current CAMS

Accredited Officials containing information on the National Officiating Program; licence

application, upgrade and maintenance; training and development; policies and procedures. Click

the link below to download:

Licensing and Accreditation Guide 2013-2014 (pdf)

The CAMS Accredited Official licensing

structure has two parts: Graded Officials

Licences and Non Graded Officials

Licences.

Graded Officials Licences have six grading

levels and are available to all CAMS

Accredited Officials to achieve. Non

Graded Officials Licenses have two types:

Specialist Licence holders are those that

hold professional qualifications and are

registered medical service providers.

Appointed Licence holders are those that

have been appointed by the management of

CAMS.

The diagram below shows the licence

pathway and the available disciplines in

which to specialise at Bronze level. Each of

the disciplines in blue have an associated

training module, as does General Official

(Introductory Module), Club Chief and

Silver level. For more information on

training modules, visit Training.

An official may hold different levels for

different disciplines of officiating at any one time (e.g. they could be a Gold Steward and also a

Bronze Rally Official). The graded levels are defined as follows:

Trainee

For those with no current motor sport officiating experience who are capable of working under

direct supervision at all events.

General Official

For those with motor sport officiating experience who are capable of working under indirect

supervision at all events.

Club Chief (Club Level Specific)

For those with motor sport officiating experience working without supervision, capable of

performing the role of Clerk of the Course/Event Director, assuming a team-leader role (except

Chief Scrutineer) or Chief Steward role at Club/Multi-Club events (excluding race, rally and off

road events).

Bronze

For those officials qualified to officiate without supervision, capable of performing the role of

team-leader (may take responsibility for other officials), officiating as Chief up to and including

State level events and act as General Official at any level event.

Silver

For those officials with motor sport officiating experience qualified to work without supervision,

capable of assuming a team-leader role (and taking responsibility for other officials), officiating

as Chief up to and including National level events, and act as a General Official at any level

event.

Gold

For those officials with motor sport officiating experience qualified to work without supervision,

capable of assuming a team-leader role (and taking responsibility for other officials), officiating

as Chief up to and including International level events, and act as a General Official at any level

event.

Reminders

Race Day Clothing.

Drivers need to be aware that there are minimum standards for clothing on race day and that

clothing standards are part of the scrutineering process. That means that if you are not dressed

in your race gear when the car is being scrutineered, then you will have to produce what you

are wearing. Below is a summary of what can and cannot be worn when racing. If these

standards are not met then you will not pass scrutineering and will not be able to race.

Helmet Must meet Australian standards. In good condition. No cracks, dents or deep scratches and it cannot be painted. The lining must be in good condition. Fasteners need to be in good condition.

Clothing Drivers and passengers must be dressed in clothing that covers them from neck to ankle to wrists. The clothing can not be nylon. For example, long sleeved Visy tops cannot be worn.

Footwear Footwear can be either shoes or boots. Both need to have a leather upper but can have elastic sides. For example, pull on work boots are ok but nylon sneakers are not. Leather upper sneakers/runners are ok.

Please follow the link for more in-depth explanation. CLICK HERE

Club Apparel.

Polo Tops, Sweats and Hoodies are now available to order from Blue Sky in Swan Hill with club

logo. Please allow adequate amount of time for them to take enough orders to do a run. Prices

for the clothing will depend on the size. Logos are available for embroidery on the back (large)

and on the front.

General Official’s Course- the club needs more Official’s. The first step in the process is to

complete a General Official’s Course. Can you please make contact with Lynne Paynter who will

advise C.A.M.S. and start the ball rolling.
