Eclipse can often do ju st that, but it needs three tools.

First, you need prefix and suffix entries in your steno dictionary. Most steno writers have entries for prefixes like {pre/\ } and suffixes like {As}. The more entries, the better. The "Prefixes and Suffixes" dictionary in this kit contains over 300 entries designed to improve translation. Some entries like {/\ed} are obvious, but many may not have occurred to you. Change the steno, if necessary, and you're likely to improve your translation results almost immediately.

Second, Eclipse needs a Prefixes and Suffixes table to guide it in constructing words. The spelling dictionary will be the final guide to correct spelling; however, the program will not know what spelling adjustments to attempt unless it has a good Prefixes and Suffixes table. Again, Eclipse installs with an extensive table; but many users will not feel comfortable modifying this table, which is in the "Programming" (formerly, "Advanced ") section of User Settings. This kit saves you the trouble. It allows you to import settings for a Prefixes and Suffixes table of over 400 entries.

Third, Eclipse needs a spelling dictionary which contains the word you're trying to write. This is a nobrainer, since the program already comes with a spelling dictionary of more than 200,000 entries and you can add additional words without limit.

Whereto Begin?Start by importing the updated Prefix/Suffix settings. Then look at the dictionary entries to see which ones you 'll want to start using, perhaps with different steno than the samples that are given.

Importing Keyboard SettingsGo to User Settings (Alt U) so that you can "Import Settings" from the "Prefixes and Suffixes" file.

Note: Im porting the Prefixes/Suffixes settings will completely replace the existing Prefixes and Suffixes table within your User Settings. Each dictionary entry has sample steno, but it is not my intention to suggest that you must start using these steno strokes. Please change the steno for any dictionary entry, but do not change the text. For example, you might find an O*EFR entry, press the Enter key to modify it, then press the Steno button and change it to SKWROEFR. However, this particular entry needs to be defined as{over-/\ } in order to work properly. So you can change the steno of the entry, but not the text.

Note: In this Pref,xes and Suff,xes dictionary, I occasionally give duplicate entries for alternate steno strokes. For example, the (Aivity} suff,x has been entered with both EUF TEU and EUF TAOE. Eclipse makes it easy to add duplicate entries. Just place your cursor on an entry, press Ctr/ G as if you were creating a global, and use your computer keyboard to indicate the alternate steno stroke(s) you'd like to use. When you press the Enter key, you'll notice the text is already typed inand you won't have to retype it.

There are four elements to this example:1. The Sample Steno: ER. Why has ER been chosen as the sample steno for this particular entry? Because the

"er" sound is what you hear at the end of the word "pepper" or "creator" or "familiar." Of course, you can use any other steno stroke that you find more natural.

2. The Dictionary Entry: {"er}3. The Prefixes and Suffixes Table support for this dictionary entry.

The word "pep" may not even be in your dictionary. Ifyou're using Intelligent Phonetics, Eclipse will probably recognize the word and adjust its spelling as it adds the "er" suffix to translate "pepper."

"Carbonate"may not be in your dictionary, but Eclipse could easily translate "carbonator" from a few, basic building blocks:

Wherever possible, I've looked for examples where the root word and the final word are not related in meaning or perhaps only distantly related. "Pep" and "pepper"probably are not related.

A prefix and a suffix can also hook together to form an intended word. For example, {er/\ } and {/\er}could create "error."

Additional Notes:

When it attaches prefixes or suffixes, Eclipse only makes spelling adjustments at the edges of root words, not in the middle. Thus, if you write "example" and then the suffix {"ry}, it would translate as "examplry" -rather than "exemplary." For these less common spelling adjustments, simply create special entries in your steno dictionary.For instance, KPAFRPL REU = exemplary.

Auto Includes

Here's what you need to create an Auto Include:

The file must exist, for example: Header, Omit

The 3 items you need to make an Auto Include:

1. The file and its exact spelling

2. Two steno strokes. Example: START/START

3. Dictionary Entry Format command: {<filename}. For example: {<Header}

Here is one way to create an Auto Include.

Hit Ctrl D (Dictionary Editor Simulator)

Enter steno strokes. (i.e.: START/START} , Click Okay. Click on the Special Entry drop down boxChoose Auto Include (If you have your Block File Folder set up, then it will come up) Click on the file you want (i.e. Header), Click Okay.

Enter the Dictionary English Format command: {<filename}

Go to Realtime to test Auto Include.

Job Report

The Tools menu/Job Report option calculates and displays statistics for the active file.

The report lists the number of pages, paragraphs, lines, words, and folios in your document. The "Time spent editing" feature shows the total amount of time you have spent editing the job, down to the second. Note that this covers the entire time thejob has been open, so it will count time spent writi ng the job in Realtime or time spent on a coffee break if you leave the job open on your screen.

In addition to calculating content statistics, this dialog shows a complete list of all print commands in the document, including comment lines left by a scopist or proofreader. (The only exception is conditional page breaks, of which there are many in a document, and it is not useful to list them.) The list has page/line numbers by each print command.

You can select any item on the list and click on the Go to cmd button to jump immediately to that spot in the transcript. In the example above, it would take you to the 3rd comment in the document. Issuing a Go to cmd does not close the Job Report dialog, so you can cross-check more than one location.

You can use this feature to view scopist or proofreader comments, and since it shows all print commands, you can see running headers and footers at a glance, index lines, etc.

How to Add Print/Comment commands in the Edit Mode;

Hit Alt N - A Co: line will appear. You can then type in a desired comment, such as Check Spelling.

In the file, when you are ready to see the Job Report of all of your Print Commands, click on the Tools menu, then click on the Job Report option. A list will appear and you can then click on the desired Co: line and then the Go to cmd button and your cursor will move to that location.

How to Add PrinVComment commands in the Realtime Mode:

In Realtime, write your desired stroke, i .e., K-BK/K-BK, global those strokes, Ctr! g, and then click on the Special Entries drop down list and choose Print Command. In the global window will appear :

You can then add your desired comment text, such as Check Spelling. The end result in your global text box would be:

2006Editing from the steno keyboard is a goal of many writers. For some CAT systems, it's the only way to edit the last lines of a realtime file. Of course, Eclipse users can use either keyboard to edit any part of a realtime file. Editing from the writer ju st offers a fast way to perform many steps without really breaking up the stenoflow.

Where to Begin?The "Realtime Editing" and "Keymode" dictionaries can give you a head start on this exciting process. Start by looking at these summary charts. Begin with the most practical entries that take the least steno strokes. Add others with time.
