Following the September 30 Extraordinary General Meeting of the shareholders, Toshiba now has a new management team in place. Our immediate aims are to regain trust and revitalize the company. We are responding resolutely to the discovery of inappropriate accounting by enhancing internal controls. In October, we initiated wide ranging reforms of our corporate governance, including establishing an Internal Audit Division, and an Audit Committee composed entirely of outside directors. At the board level, we have reinforced oversight of top management and operations by appointing a majority of outside directors. Going forward, we will continue to implement necessary measures, while working to fulfill our social responsibilities through business activities that place the highest priority on human life, safety and compliance.

In an environment where the only certainty is change at an ever faster pace, we must overcome many complex problems, including population growth, resource depletion and the ever-growing need for energy. Environmental Vision 2050Environmental ManagementIn “Environmental Vision 2050,” Toshiba Group envisages a mid-century world where people lead affluent lifestyles in harmony with the Earth. Throughout product life cycles, from manufacture to use, to reuse and recycling, Toshiba Group emphasizes safety, security and value creation. The Group also strives for harmony with the Earth by working to mitigate climate change, use resources efficiently and manage chemicals properly, in order to reduce environmental impacts.In order to realize Environmental Vision 2050, Toshiba Group has set a long-term goal to increase eco-efficiency by 10 times compared to the FY2000 level by FY2050. Eco-efficiency can be expressed as a fraction, with value as the numerator and environmental impacts as the denominator. It can be improved largely by increasing added value and decreasing environmental impacts simultaneously. To further accelerate its initiatives for environmental management based on the four “Green” concepts—“Greening of Process,” “Greening of Products,” “Greening by Technology,” and “Green Management”—as we aim to become one of the world’s foremost eco-companies.

CSR management means giving top priority to human life, safety, and legal compliance and contributing to the solution of problems in the global society through business. In order to meet their expectations, we need to communicate with various stakeholders—including customers, shareholders and investors, suppliers and employees—as we promote CSR activities. Such activities must be supported by each and every one of Toshiba Group’s 200,000 employees worldwide.In 2004 Toshiba became a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, which defines universal principles covering human rights, labor standards, the environment, and anti-corruption. We are working to fulfill our role as a leading global enterprise in all these areas.

Toshiba Group’s CSRWe continue to support the reconstruction of the Tohoku region from the perspectives of human development, manufacturing (industrial development), and community development, toward helping the region and the people hit by the disaster to recover as soon as possible. Toshiba has been providing university scholarships to selected students in the Tohoku region since fiscal 2011. With employee-organized fundraising and labor union activities taking the lead, we continue to dispatch volunteers to the quake-hit region. In addition, specialty goods from the affected areas are on sale at shops in Toshiba HQ and our factories, and local foods are used in canteen meals. Since FY2012, as part of their initial training, new employees of Toshiba and other Group companies assist reconstruction.

The Toshiba “ASHITA” Award, launched in 2005 to commend Toshiba Group employees for outstanding social contributions, received 1,540 applications in fiscal 2014 and awards were made to seven, including a collaborative activity geared toward self-sustaining communities in rural areas (Toshiba India Private Limited). In 2014, we also carried out “Toshiba Group Simultaneous Social Contribution Action” on December 5, designated as International Volunteer Day by the United Nations. Our aim was to achieve a major contribution to society through the cooperation of as many as possible of Toshiba Group’ s employees. We encouraged all employees to actively participate and to help build a sense of unity and purpose.

Hisashige Tanaka (1799-1881)

Known as the “genius of mechanical wonders,” Hisashige Tanaka was one of Japan’s greatest inventors during the late Edo (1603-1868) and early Meiji (1868-1912) periods. His long list of inventions includes the “Man-nen dokei” chronometer. In addition to his brilliant craftsmanship, he was well versed in Western technologies, including telegraphy and steam engines. In 1875, at the age of 76, he opened a shop-cum-factory in Ginza, Tokyo, that manufactured various devices, most notably telegraph equipment. This is recognized as the origin of Toshiba.

Ichisuke Fujioka (1857-1918)The “father of electricity in Japan,” Ichisuke Fujioka’ s pioneered Japanese research into electric lighting. He met Thomas Edison when visiting the United States on a Japanese government mission and on his return devoted himself to the development of Japan’ s first incandescent lamps. Fujioka founded a company, Hakunetsu-sha, in 1890, to manufacture light bulbs.
