Remember, the class with the highest percentage of memberships at the end of October will win a frozen treat on Halloween and a special Halloween prize per student. Right now, Mr. Cairns' class is in the lead with 54%! Check out where your class ranks here. (Flyer attached) Let's see see if anyone can reach 100%!! Don't forget, you will receive a coupon for the Aquarium of the Pacific, Baskin-Robbins, Google Express, and one free spirit stick with your membership.

PTA MEMBERSHIP CARDS For those of you who purchased a PTA membership prior to October 1, membership cards, coupons and spirit sticks were delivered at the beginning of October. If you purchased a PTA membership prior to October 1 and did not receive your card, please email Dhiya at [email protected]. There are a few cards we could not deliver due to missing information. For those who purchased a PTA membership after October 1, membership cards, coupons and spirit sticks will be delivered in November.

RED BOOK The PTA Red Book is a great place to find information about Arnold Elementary School. In an effort to save paper, this year the Red Book has only been printed for Kindergarten and new families. The electronic version of the Red Book is available on both the PTA and the Arnold websites. We recommend that you bookmark this page on your computer as it is the best place to find PTA and School Contacts, Rules, Procedures and more! Here is a link for your convenience: Arnold PTA Red Book **If you do not have internet access at home, please see Michelle in the office for a printed copy. We did print a few extras!

PLEASE HELP SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL PROGRAMS! Thank you to everyone who has already made a Direct Donation to the PTA to help fund our many school enrichment programs. We are grateful for any amount which you can spare. So far, we are only at around $18,000 of the $50,000 we need to continue our Adventures in Art program, to send our students on Field Trips and to purchase computer equipment for our students. We wish to continue these and many other programs for this year, but we need your help. Please consider making a tax-deductible direct donation. As a small thank you, for every $100 donation made before October 30th, we will enter you into a raffle drawing for a chance at 2 iPad Minis and 2 iPod Touches! Donations can be made directly on our website at www.arnold-pta.org by clicking on the Direct Donation icon. If you would prefer to donate by check, please see the enclosed flyer for more information and the form to let us know who you are to enter you in our drawing. Thank you! - PTA President Colan Kwock

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

HALLOWEEN INFO Even though Halloween is on a Monday this year, please don’t forget that we must follow the TUSD Wellness Policy on campus at all times. Do not send your children with candy to school that day, for themselves or for others. There will be more info in next week’s ACT about the Halloween activities, but as you are planning please also remember that costumes must follow the dress code and NO masks, fake blood or fake weapons of any kind are allowed.

EMERGENCY/SAFETY INFORMATION The Torrance Fire Department came to Arnold on Tuesday, October 4th for Basic Aid Training (BAT) for all 5th grade students. They will come to Arnold again for the TFD Fire Drill and Safety Inspection on October 24th. Please see the Arnold Bell Schedule below to review the safety drills that Arnold practices.

Emergency Information

EARTHQUAKE - no bells (duck, cover, and hold) – then evacuate

BELLS: FIRE - Continuous 10 second bell, 5 second pause, repeated to evacuate.

SHELTER IN PLACE - 1 long bell, 2 short bells, repeat 3 times. Announcement over the PA system.

Should an emergency or disaster situation ever arise in our area while school is in session, please be assured that our school and school district have prepared and continue to update our emergency plans. However, your cooperation is essential to support your child who may be at school when such an emergency occurs. These are some of the most important things you can do:

Preparedness: Make sure the Online Emergency Card information is current and accurate.

Provide your child with his/her “Student Survival Kit”, which will be kept in the classroom with the current blue “Emergency” card. This kit will help sustain your child until he/she can be picked up safely from school. The “Student Survival Kit” specifications can be found on the Arnold Website www.arnold.tusd.org

If there is a disaster . . .

Remain Calm Do not telephone the school; telephone lines may be needed for emergency

communications. Walk, do not drive, to school to pick up your child. Streets must be kept open for

emergency vehicles. Come to the “release area” at the back gate on 228th. Parents are not allowed to

enter campus during an emergency. Parents must fill out a Student Emergency Release Form and then a staff member will radio the classroom teacher for release of the student.

Tune your radio to KFI 640AM, KNX 1070AM or KFOX 93.5FM for emergency announcements.

All children will be kept at school until we are able to make some type of contact with you. Our staff members are prepared to become civil defense employees in times of emergency and will remain on campus to assist children until dismissed by the principal.

The school is equipped with emergency medical supplies, water, and various types of needed equipment and tools. The more prepared the school and community members are, the safer our children will be.

Please cooperate with school personnel during an emergency.

NEXT BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING – MONDAY, OCTOBER 24TH The meeting will be held at 7:30pm at the District Office – 2336 Plaza del Amo. Torrance.

Check back next week for more important school info. Arnold Elementary School is proud to be a California Gold Ribbon School!
