What is a Comic Jam? One person draws a beginning panel, then a dif-ferent person continues with a follow-ing panel, and so on until you have a finished comic page. From comic book professionals to occasional scratch pad doodlers, everyone is welcome. It’s a time when you can let loose with your imagination and not worry if it’s perfect or not.

The Toronto Comic Jam runs the last Tuesday of every month except for December.

This is the saddest moment in the history of the Toronto Comic Jam; the passing of David

Braggadocio. A small group of Comic Jammers gathered at the Cameron House this past weekend to mark his passing.

Dalton Sharp was the first to speak up. “I always hated David. I mean seriously; I hated the man’s guts.” He paused there to swirl his scotch in its class before taking another sip. Sharp was the man who kept the Comic Jam running from 2004 until January of 2014 when organizing duties were unceremoniously usurped by the afore mentioned departed. “But despite being a douchebag,” a drunken Sharp continued, “at least he got he Jam book out on time. Then again, the Nazi’s were also good with schedules.”

Another Comic Jammer there that night wished to remain anonymous and also had strong words about David Braggadocio’s passing. “I also disliked him strongly. He never drew Mr. Fuzzypants nearly enough in the Comic Jam. Seriously, I’d never see him draw at the Jam! Someone should draw Mr. Fuzzy pants burying David at the next Jam,” the annonomous Jammer slurred before falling off her chair.

Those gathered around the bar that night could all agree that David took on much of the organizing duties the past couple of years and that there were some tangible superficial changes to the event and the book published. When asked how the Jam as an organization would fare without him, long time Comic Jammer Tom King explained.

“The Comic Jam is pretty basic you know; People just show up and draw.” A drunken murmur of agreement swept through the bar. “Yeah, as long as people keep doing that, it’ll be just fine.”

One Comic Jammer wasn’t so sure about the Jam’s immediate future. “David

Braggadocio was the kindest, bravest, warmest,

most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life,” sniffled a visually upset Shane Steponas. With the passing of Braggadoccio, much of the Jam book’s publishing duties have fallen on his shoulders. The groundwork for the November issue was laid out before his passing but come the New Year, Steponas will be handling the book alone unless others step in to help.

“Yeah the Comic Jam will continue now that David’s gone,” whimpered the new jam book editor, “but it won’t be the same.” And with that he, began to sob uncontrollably.

As the others averted their eyes, Comic Jam Founder Dave Howard stepped forward to console Steponas. “There was something intangible about what he brought to the Comic Jam,” he declared. As the founder of the Jam Howard has seen its various iterations and knows the burden of organizing the Jam. “I’ve known a lot of David’s in my time, but of all the David’s Braggadocios in the world, David was surely the David Braggadociest.”

Everyone around the bar murmured in agreement. Regardless of their feelings about him, it’s undeniable that Braggadocio left an impression on

the Comic Jam. Why, if you just listen carefully, You might actually be able to hear his voice echoing through the Comic Jam on the last Tuesday of the month. “What the hell are you guys doing,” the voice seems to whisper. “I’M NOT DEAD! I’m just taking time off to focus on my homework at Sheridan!”

In memoriam of the passing, Comic Jammers managed to find an old comic that Braggadocio actually drew a few years ago that he never bothered to publish. His therapist wrote the script while Braggadocio drew the pictures. “Oh GOD! You’re not publishing THAT are you,” the voice of the departed seems to speak lovingly. “And I’m not dead Goddamnit!”

There’ll be a collection at the next Comic Jam in his honour and a memorial website will be set up in the following months.
