President’s Messageeptember has been a month for reaching out in the spirit of cooperation for our PHUHS IB Boosters organization. It is important for all school-wide booster organizations to work together to promote and encourage not only the success of our
individual programs, but the success of PHUHS as a whole. Each year, PHUHS IB Boosters encourage membership in PTSA and coordinates with other booster organizations for Teacher Appreciation, among other events. That said, the PHUHS Medical Boosters are hosting a HERriccane Run on October 4th that is a school-wide event promoting breast cancer awareness and benefits the Morton Plant Mease Mammography Voucher Program. I encourage you to look at the flyer in our newsletter and consider signing up and supporting this wonderful event.

In addition, IB Boosters are updating and changing with the times. I am pleased to announce that we are now accepting all major credit cards for IB Spirit Wear and Memberships. Furthermore, I would like to thank all parents that have joined PHUHS IB Boosters this month. Your support is critical to the programs and services we provide to the students, faculty and staff. The first marking period is well under way. Hopefully, everyone has gotten back into the school routine.
We have an upcoming event that I want to be sure that parents are aware of. We will have our Annual Grade Level Seminars on Thurs-day, October 30, 2014 at 6:00 pm. This is an evening that begins with a brief IB Booster club meeting, and then we break out into grade specific seminars. Each grade level will cover important “Just in time” information for that grade level. The seminars are hosted by Mrs. Barker, Mrs. Shepherd-Thompson and vari-ous IB teachers. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Treasurer’s ReportTreasurer Judy Lawrence presents the monthly Treasurer’s Report for August 2014. The club began August 2014 with an opening cash balance of $ 11,852.
During August the club collected:

A Memorable Evening – In this impressive IB cer-emony, each Junior is formally accepted into the IB program. Refreshments are served afterwards. This is an event for Junior families, friends, and faculty.
April 30th - IB Coffee houseThis is a wonderful end of year IB tradition. The IB Coffee House is an opportunity for our Junior and Senior students to show off their talents in a variety of ways. This is an evening event and all IBstudents and families are invited to attend.
IB Boosters Hospitality committee hosted the first IB teachers lunch of the year on Monday, September 22nd. Thank you to Lynne Sherman, Dori Hazama ,Cara Akins, Analisa Little, Nikki Hervey, Monica Chmara, and Dawn Schmidt for your generous donations! The teachers were very excited to see the yummy spread! The PSAT/NMSQT test will be offered to all sophomores and interested freshman and juniors on October 15, 2014. For freshman and juniors who wish to take the PSAT there is a fee of $14. Seniors:• Deadlines will be fast approaching. Familiarize yourself with the registration/application deadlines for colleges, ACT/SAT tests, scholarships, and service opportunities. • The fall is the best time to visit campuses of your favorite colleges. Use one of your college visit days to check them out first hand! • Have you started a HUGE college list? Do you have a running pros/cons list going? If not, there is no time like the present to get started before those deadlines pass you by.
Juniors – Research! Research! Research! Start identifying what you want out of college, what major you are thinking about and start developing your college list now. Collegeboard.org has a great college planning tool to check out and save your searches.
Freshman and Sophomores now is the time for you to get involved! These two years are a great time to start building your resume by joining a club, sport, organization and start volunteering.

Leaders Seminar: On September 10 and 11 the IB HL and SL History Seniors participated in a Leaders Seminar. Participants included Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Nyrere, Peron, Vargas, Mao, Castro, Mussolini, and Franco. The PHUHS Debate Team competed in North Port this past weekend with stellar results. This was an all day competition with teams competing in four different sessions during the day. Congratulations to Connor Corbett and Mia Radovanovic for their 1st place finish in the Public Forum portion of the competition.
