Timothy Simpson of Fort Lauderdale and Sergio Escalan-te of Aventura would need extra holes to determine a win-ner for the overall boys title. Simpson started off round one firing an 8-over-par 80 leaving himself 5 strokes off the lead. Escalante shot an opening round 7-over-par 79 during round one to find himself well off the lead as well. Despite facing a large deficit, both men were able to steady the ship in round two and finish regulation play tied for the lead. Escalante would only need one playoff hole to capture his first SFPGA junior tour victory. Simpson would go on to take home the boys 16-18 age division title

while Coral Springs native Justin Shiao would take home the boys 13-15 age division title.

Hobe Sound native Hannah Foster’s impressive season continued at Challenge Event #12. Foster shot 81-83 for a 163 tournament total to capture the overall girl’s title by seven strokes. RULES WITH DREW

This past month we had an interesting situation occur during the final round of the Naples Beach Club Senior Open Championship contested at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club. A player, when playing the 10th hole hit his tee ball into the lateral water hazard approximately at the orange X. In proceeding under Rule 26-1cii, the player dropped his ball on the opposite margin of the lateral water hazard equidistant from the hole (red X). Normally this would be perfectly legal, however we had adopted a local rule stating that when playing hole #10, all land above the water’s edge left of the hazard and towards the 18th fairway is out of bounds. The navy blue stakes identify the beginning and end of the designated o.b. area and do represent o.b. boundaries.

The place where the player dropped his ball when taking relief from the lateral water hazard was out of bounds. Decision 15/6 asks, “A player plays a stroke at his ball which is lying out of bounds. What is the rul-ing? A ball lying out of bounds is no longer in play and thus is a wrong ball.” So, according to Rule 15, the player must correct his mistake before playing from the next teeing ground or be disqualified.

If someone would have alerted the player that the area in which he had dropped his ball was out of bounds prior to him making a stroke, he could have corrected his mistake under Rule 20-6 and dropped in accordance

with the Rules. Had he been alerted of his mistake after playing from out of bounds but before playing from the next teeing ground, he would have in-curred a penalty of two strokes for playing a wrong ball, plus a one stroke penalty for taking relief from the hazard. The stroke he made with the wrong ball and any subsequent strokes taken prior to the correction being made would not have counted for his score.

The reason the 18th hole is out of bounds when playing the 10th hole is mainly one of safety. It would be very dangerous for a player to hit his tee ball down the 18th fairway when playing the 10th hole especially when players are present. Deci-sion 33-2a/14 states, “A committee may make a Local Rule under Rule 33-2a declaring part of an adjoining hole to be out of bounds when playing a particular hole.”

There have been many instances over the years, demonstrating how important it is for players to read the local rules sheet, especially when play-ing a course they are unfamiliar. The most famous and recent example I can think of is Dustin John-son at the 2010 PGA Championship. Do yourself a favor, read the local rules before teeing off. It just may save you a stroke or two, or even better, from being disqualified.
