TOPICS IN THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL HISTORY

OF THE LATE OTTOMAN ERA

Course Description:This course introduces the students to the historical literature on the late Ottoman Empire. Each week wefocus on a topic and examine the available literature from a critical perspective. The course aims to helpstudents develop a basic knowledge of the nineteenth-century Ottoman history. It aims to situate the lateOttoman history within the context of long term nineteenth-century world history. We pay due attention totheoretical discussions and examine the topics from a comparative and historiographical perspective.

Format:We meet once a week for three hours. Twelve sessions will be used to discuss common readings for eachweek. One session will be devoted to paper presentations.

Assignments:Weekly Readings: This seminar is organized around common readings as the basis for weekly discussions.Students are to prepare eight short prcis (a freewheeling commentary, 1-2 pages) on some aspect of theweeks readings. (40%)

Review Essay: Each student will write a review essay of at least 2000 words. In this essay students willprovide critical assessment of a group of books and articles on a certain theme related to one of thediscussion sessions in the course. In addition to assigned readings the review essay should be based onoutside readings. Students should submit a paper topic and a bibliography during week 8. (40%)

Oral Presentation: Each student will present a summary of his or her research paper in the session. These arenot to exceed 15 minutes. (20%)
