Adjectives change in form when we compare.
Examples:

Ashok is taller than Raju.
Raman is the tallest of the three.
These changed forms are called degrees of comparison.
Adjectives have three degrees of comparison which are as follows:
1. An adjective is said to be in the positive degree when there is no comparison.
Examples:
Rahul is a strong boy.
Rita is a nice girl.
2. An adjective is said to be in the comparative degree when it is used to compare two
nouns, pronouns and things. We use ‘-er’ form of adjectives. For example- bolder,
shorter, deeper, larger, wiser, braver etc.
Examples:
Abir is stronger than Ram.
Sonali is better than Mona.
3. An adjective is said to be in the superlative degree when it is used to compare more than
two nouns, pronouns and things.

Chapter 07: The Seven Snowmen
Summary:
This extract is taken from ‘Little Indians’ written by Pika Nani whose real name is Deepika
Murthy. This story is about an eleven-year girl, Jiya, her father Hitesh and her uncle Akhilesh
and Dinesh who are on a trek in the hills of Uttarakhand. Suddenly the weather changes and
the roads to return are blocked by snow. They have to take shelter at Shivcharan’s dhaaba.
Shivcharan and his two children, Om and Alka are also trapped in the heavy snowfall. Jiya
starts spending the day by chatting, playing snakes-and-ladders with Om and Alka. As they
miss the helicopter of the rescue team, they start feeling helpless. So, they decide to wait outside
the dhaaba. But it is difficult to stay outside in that snowy weather. All the men of the group
start suffering from cold and stiff joints. The children try to help their elders by making tea,
chopping vegetables and tidying up the basement. On the fourth day they are not able to see the
rescue team, so Hitesh instructs the children to play outside. Alka, Jia and Om throw the snow
balls high up in the air and watch them crashing on the ground delightfully. Then suddenly Jia
starts making a snowman with the snowballs. She uses pebbles for the eyes and a twig for the
nose. Then she shapes a smile with little stones. Later, Jia’s father, her uncles and Shivcharan

POEM : KITES
By Daphne Lister
Summary:
‘Kites’ is a very interesting poem written by Daphne Lister. This poem is about the
speaker’s love for kites and his wish to fly in the air like a kite.
The poetess herself is the speaker in the poem, she describes the sky as being whipped
by the strong force of wind blowing across it. And in this sky, the kites fly beautifully
like colourful birds. This scene attracts the speaker so much that she wishes to climb up
the kites and sail along with it in the air. For her the sound of the moving wind appears
as songs of the wild wind. She wishes to enjoy this song too.
While flying up in the sky, the speaker wants to enjoy the view of the parks and rooftops
of the town below. She assumes that the people standing below would look up at the fun
and enjoyment of the speaker and would wish too to fly up high in the air.
