1902 Coal Strike – 2nd pd.

• Penn. coal miners went on strike• They demanded 20 percent raise, 9 hour

workday’s, and a right to form a union.• Roosevelt tried to bargain with mine

operators and they refused.• Roosevelt’s actions reflected progressive

belief that disputes could be settled in an orderly way with the help of experts.

allow wealthy rail road owners from fixing high prices by dividing the business

• The Hepburn act of 1906 limits distribution of free rail road passes, form of bribery

• Congress passed the Elkins act in 1903 which made it not allowed for officials to give rebates for using railroads
