TIPS FOR PRESENTING A CLEAN, ORGANIZED HOME

TOPIC 1:

Topic 1:

Page 2: TOPIC 1 - ENTRY ONLY · Use moving as the impetus to streamline your wardrobe. Clear out items you haven’t worn in the past year and remove anything that is stained, torn, faded,

1. DE–PERSONALIZEPhotos, collectibles and other personal items put your mark on a home, which is why you want to remove them when you list. To help potential buyers imagine themselves and their mementos in your house, remove your personal touches. Gather up your photos of your favorite vacation and store them until moving day.

Don’t let personal photos put a stamp on the home you are trying to sell

2. DE-CLUTTERUnless you look carefully, it’s hard to see your own clutter. Take a fresh look around your house before you list. See any items you don’t use? Any areas where things tend to collect? Anything that’s simply in the way? Once you’ve identified the culprits, throw out, recycle and put them away in storage.

Buy space saving organizers to make your everyday objects look presentable

3. ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE! Papers, bills, mail, magazines and newspapers create a messy, unsettled impression and make potential buyers feel turned-off. Box up these items or place them in a closed drawer, anything to remove them from view. Identify what items or papers you don’t need and promptly throw out or recycle them.

Cleared off surfaces allow buyers to imagine their own items in the open spaces

4. LESS IS MORE Too much furniture, especially if out of date or in poor condition, can overwhelm a space, make rooms feel smaller and turn off a potential buyer. When you’re selling, appearances matter. So remove furniture that blocks passages and crowds a room. Pack away extra side tables, ottomans or chairs that look a little shabby. Move extra pieces to a storage unit, a friend’s basement, or donate pieces you no longer want.

With less furniture, you are able to open up your space more and make the area more inviting

5. CLEAN UP Use moving as the impetus to streamline your wardrobe. Clear out items you haven’t worn in the past year and remove anything that is stained, torn, faded, stretched out, ready to be donated or headed for the dumpster. Then, spruce up your closet but changing out your hangers so that they’re all the same color or style. If budget allows, purchase attractive storage bins or baskets that are pleasing to the eye.

Before and After

6. PUT THE TOYS AWAYWhether you have kids, cats, dogs or a messy partner, keep all of the toys neat and out of sight. Pack up seasonal items and move them to the same place you’re storing that extra furniture. Make sure outside toys like bikes, rackets, golf clubs, skateboards, etc. are organized, hung up, or put away in storage containers with lids.

Toy boxes and shelves offer ample amount of space to organize toys

7. SHOW OFF THE KITCHENYour kitchen is probably one of your home’s biggest selling features. Help prospective buyers see your counters and backsplash by clearing them off items you don’t need every day. Store larger appliances such as coffee machines, mixers and other moveable appliances in cupboards. Clean off and clean out the fridge (yes, they will open it and look inside).

Counters are cluttered with daily items that could be removed

8. IF IN DOUBT, GET IT OUTIt’s not just the top of your counters that matter. Tidy up the pantry, pack away extra dishes that crowd cupboards and insert organizers into that “junk” drawer.

When wondering how much clean up you need to do on your home, it’s good to keep this final guideline in mind. Those neat freaks will not be able to overlook your clutter and could move your home into the reject pile. Error on the side of cleanliness.
