Important Note:WhiletheTopazplug-insworkinavarietyofhosteditors,ReMaskisnotcompatiblewithLightroom,ApertureoriPhoto,asitrequireslayersandtransparencytofunction.Therefore,ReMaskwillnotappear in the external editor Fusion Express.

Topaz ReMask works as both a standalone editor and plugin. This means a compatible host editor is not requiredtouseTopazReMask,althoughyoumayaccessitasaplugininafewcompatiblehosteditors.

Download Instructions• To download ReMask please visit topazlabs.com/

downloads. • Locate Topaz ReMask and click on the appropriate

Mac or Windows button beneath that product to start your download.

• Thedownloadshouldstartautomatically,howeverifprompted,select‘Save’.

• The downloaded installer will then be located in yourDownloadsfolderordesktopasan.exefile(Windows)ora.dmgfile(Mac).

The program will then install as a standalone editor to:

Accessing ReMask in LightroomAfterinstallationiscomplete,openLightroomandnavigatetoPhoto->EditIn->TopazReMask5.

Please Note: Lightroom does not support layers. Any transparent masked areas will be returned to Lightroom as white. Any images with solid color or image backgrounds will be returned to Lightroom as flattened images.

Accessing ReMask in Corel Paintshop Pro1. First launch PaintShop Pro.

2.GotoMenufile->Preferences->FileLocations.Select“Plug-ins”fromthe“FileTypes”listandclick“Add”.

3. Choose C: \ Program Files \ Topaz Labs \ Topaz ReMaskplug-insandclick“OK”.

4. Topaz ReMask 5 is now available to use. Simply gotoEffects->Plug-insandselect“TopazReMask5”.

Installation Accessing ReMask in Host ProgramsPhotoshop, PSE, and PSCCTouseReMaskasaplugininPs,PseandPsCCyoumustfirstrunitasastandaloneeditor(Maconly).ReMaskwill then be available to use in Photoshop via the Filter menu.ForWindows,thepluginshouldautomaticallyappear in the Filter list.

Entering License Key1.Toactivatetheprogram,openReMaskandselectMenu->EnterKey(bottomleftcorner).

2.Enterorcopy&pasteyour30-digitlicensekeytostart your trial or activate the program. (Be sure thatyou have not copied any extra spaces).

3.Ifyouarerunningtrialmode,toswitchtothefullversionallyouneedtodoisenteryourfulllicensekey.Youdonotneedtouninstallthecurrentsoftwareastheonlydifferencebetweenthefullandtrialversionisthe key used to activate the program.

Introductiona new innovative trimap technique. The trimap is made upofthreetones:green,redandblue.

Usersareabletoquicklydefinetheelementsintheirimage that they want to keep using green; elements that they want to cut using red; and elements that they want Topaz ReMask 4 to compute using blue.

Selections are made using the brush tools and then TopazReMask4isabletoanalyzetheuser-madeselections and isolate the image subject with prec ision.

Masking UnveiledWhat is Masking?Maskingistheprocessofisolatingasubjectorspecificimageelementsthatyouwishtopreserve,thenerasingeverythingelsethatyoudonotwant.Itisalsoreferredto as extraction or cutouts.

What are the benefits of masking?Masking allows you to take the desired subject and elements & cut them out and then merge them into another image scene or background. Masking makes iteasytochangethetheme,sceneorsettingofyourdigital photography subjects.

Maskingisnotjustforcreatingcompositeimages;italsomakesitpossibletoadjustonlypartsoftheimage.Forexample,selectivelyincreasingsaturation,contrast,brightness,etc.(alsocalledselectiveadjustments).

When do I need to mask?Masking your digital images is ideal when you want to remove backgrounds and unwanted detail elements or toprotectanareaofyourimagefromadjustments.

Why do I need Topaz ReMask 5?TopazReMask5featureseasytouse,intuitivetoolsthatwillsaveyoutimeandmoneybysimplifyingthe masking process. With Topaz ReMask 4 you can eliminatethebusyworkofusingmasks,paths,layeradjustments,selectionsanderasertoolstoisolateasubject in your image.

Theorangetransformiconwillallowyoutoscaleandrotatethebackgroundimage.Onceyouhavethe background image to the size and position that youwant,clicktheorangeiconagaintodeselectthebackground image and continue editing.

The yellow image select icon will allow you to change backgroundimagesfromtheimageyouoriginallyselected.

Beneath the background icons are sliders that will allow you to edit the background image to better matchthemaskedforeground.

3. Removed Background Color Selector IconWith the enhanced background panel and additional backgroundeditingoptions,thetri-circlebackgroundcolor selector icon is no longer necessary. It has been removedtostreamlinetheuserinterface.

1. Standalone ProgramGREAT NEWS! You no longer need a host editing program to use ReMask. Now you can run ReMask 5 as a standalone program or as a plugin. This will also enable ReMask to be used with Lightroom. When installing ReMask 5 the icon will be added to your Applications,alongwithyourotherstandaloneTopazprograms.

2. Background Replacement and EditingWe’veaddednewfeaturesthatallowyoutoreplaceandeditthebackgroundofyourmaskedimagewithouthavingtoleaveReMask.Onceyoucomputeyour mask a background panel will appear in the editingparametersontheleft.

BRUSHES

Primary BrushesThe primary (or basic) brush tools allow you to select the elements in the image t hat you want to keep (green),remove(red)andcompute(blue).TheprimarybrusheswillturnintotheTopazMagicbrushafteryouselectCompute.Brushsizesrangefrom1-255.

Topaz Magic BrushThe Topaz Magic Brush tool (which becomes available afteryouselect“ComputeMask”)allowsyoutomakeintricate detail eliminations and recoveries to selected partsofyourimage.Itwillonlyaffecttheblueareaofyour initial trimap. It will not change your original red and green selections.

Work AreaToolsGeneral ToolsThegeneraltoolsinclude:undo,redo,selectionmarquee,handtool,andzoom.Thesquareselectionmarqueetoolallowsyoutoselectacertainareaofyourimagetomaskwithoutaffectingtheareasoutsideofthat boundary.

Topanthepreviewimage,selectthehandtool(pressH)andholdtheleftmousebuttononthepreview image and drag it around. You can alsopan your preview image by holding the spacebar key and moving your mouse or by using the red selection box in your preview navigator.

Transparency BrushesThisbrushallowsyoutodefinetwocolors(keep/greenand remove/red) to target at once. The transparency brushiskeyforimageswheretransparencyisafactorbecauseitwillallowuserstoselectaforegroundcolor,suchasthewhiteofaweddingveil,andabackgroundcolortoberemovedfrombehindtheveil.

Compute MaskThe Compute Mask button will analyze your trimap selectionsandcreateyourimagemask.Afteryouclickthisbuttonadditionalmaskrefinementtoolswillappear allowing you to create a more accurate mask.

Work AreaColor Range BrushesThesebrushesallowyoutobrushouttheforegroundorbackgroundareainyourimage,basedonthecolorselectedandthesettingoftheColorslider.

Color RangeThe Color Range slider allows you to determine the spectrumofshadesaffectedwithintheimagebasedonthe main color selection.

ADJUSTMENTS

Afteryoumakeyourtrimapselectionsyouwillneedtoclickon“ComputeMask”foryourselectionstobeanalyzedandyourmaskcreated.OnceyourmaskiscreatedtheAdjustmentoptionswillappear,allowingyoutorefineyourmaskevenfurther.

Work AreaEdge HardnessDetermines how hard your mask is applied to subject edges in your image. The higher the parameter the harderyouredgeswillbe.Thelowertheparameter,thesofter(morefeathered)youredgeswillbe.

Mask StrengthDeterminesthebrightnessofthemask.Increasingthis parameter will give you more detail by making the weaker mask details stronger.

Edge ShiftShiftsthemaskedgebyonepixelineitherdirection.

Recovery (Foreground Color)Revivesthecolorofyourforegroundinweaker/moretransparent areas.

Desaturation (Foreground Color)Desaturatestheedgesofyourmask(inweaker/moretransparent areas) to help with color contamination and bleeding.

ResetThe reset tools allow you to reset your entire image to theselectedtrimapcolor.Usingthisfeaturewilleraseany previous selections made.

Thetransformiconwillallowyoutomakechangestothescaleandorientationofyourbackgroundimage.

Image SelectThe image select icon will allow you to change your backgroundimagetoadifferentimage.

BrightnessAdjuststhebrightnessofyourimage.Dragtotheleftto decrease brightness. Drag to the right to increase brightness.

ContrastAdjuststhedifferencebetweenlightanddarkcolorsinyourimage.Dragtothelefttotoincreasecontrastdifference.Dragtotherighttodecreasecontrastdifference.

SaturationAdjuststhedepthofcolorinanimage.Dragtothelefttodecreasedepthandbrightness,movingclosertoamonochromatic image. Drag to the right to brighten and deepen colors.

Work AreaBACKGROUND

Onceyourmaskisrefinedyouhavetheabilitytoselectwhichtypeofbackgroundyouwouldlikeforyourimage:transparent,solidcolor,orimage.Youalso have the ability to make some adjustments to the background,ifyouchooseanimagebackground.

TransparentSelecting a transparent background will hide everything that you selected to Cut in your mask and will appear on screen as a gray and white checkerboard pattern.

Solid ColorThe solid color background option allows you tochoosewhatcolorwillappearinplaceofCutselections. This is an excellent way to check your mask as well.

ImageSelectingthisoptionwillopenyourcomputerfilebrowser,allowingyoutoselectanimageasthebackground.

ask Saving Your Image

SavingyourimagewithReMaskisafairlysimpletask.To save navigate to the bottom right corner and select ‘SaveAs’

Another way to save your image is to navigate to the topmenubarandselectFile->SaveAs

You’llthenhavetheoptiontonamethefileandchoosethefiletypes:JPEG,TIFFandPNG

Dependingonthefiletype,you’llthenbepresentedwith several options including color space and bit depth.

TemperatureAdjustshowcoolorwarmanimageis.Dragtotheleftto create a colder (blue) image. Drag to the right to create a warmer (yellow) image.

TintAdjuststhecolortonesofyourimage.Dragtotheleftto give your image a green tint. Drag to the right to give your image a magenta tint.

BlurAdjusts how clearly you see the background image. Dragtotherighttoincreasetheamountofbluronthebackground image.

Enable Brush on Original ImageAllows you to draw on the original image (you will not see anything changed on the original image). WhenthisoptionisturnedOFF,drawingontheoriginalimagewillforceswitchtheviewtoTrimapview.

Enable Sticky Mode for f/b brushesAllowsyoutoenablethestickymodeforyourforeground/background(f/b)brushes.

Enable Zoom with Mouse Wheel (Mac users only)Allows user to zoom in using their mouse. May be turnedoffforMacuserswithAppleMagicMouse.

Enable Auto-Create LayerAutomaticallycreatesanewimagelayerforyouinPhotoshop.

Enable Use Layer MaskAutomatically saves your ReMask extraction back to alayer mask.

Enable TooltipsAllows you to enable or disable the pop up tips duringyourworkflow

Enable Auto-UpdateAllowsReMasktoautomaticallycheckforanddownloadavailable Topaz ReMask updates.

Load Trimap/MaskSelectthisfeaturetoloadapreviouslysavedtrimap/mask to continue editing on. You must have the original image that pairs up with the selected mask in order to load it or else you will receive this message:

Before ReMask: The image is saturated and the brick wall in the foreground takes focus away from the couple.

After ReMask: The couple was masked out, allowing for separate selective adjustments to their saturation and the new monochromatic background. Now they are the focus!

When I fill my red (cut) areas on my trimap the whole image filled with red.There is most likely a gap somewhere in blue (compute) outline. The blue outline acts like a barrier in order to ensure accurate masking results. Use your undo button to go back a step then zoom in and pan yourimagetofindtheopeninginyourblueoutline.Onceyoulocateit,selectyourbluebrushtoolandcloseitoff.Thenyoucanselectyourredfloodfilltoolandfillinthepartsofyourimagethatyouwouldliketocut.

I get the error: ‘You have not selected Compute Mask to compute your selections. Please click OK to go back and select Refine Mask. To exit without making changes to your image please select cancel.’This is because your trimap selections have not been analyzed. You will need to click on the Compute button inordertocreateyourmask.AfterthatyoucanselectOKandprocessyourentireimage.

Why doesn’t ReMask appear in Lightroom/iPhoto/Aperture/Fusion Express?

TopazReMaskisnotcompatiblewiththesespecificprograms,asitrequiresahosteditorthatsupportslayersandtransparency.Ifyoudonotownahosteditorthatsupportslayers(e.g.Photoshop,PaintShopPro),weofferastandaloneeditor,PhotoFXlab,thatwill allow you to use ReMask and can be accessed as an externaleditorinLr,iPhoto&Aperture.

How do I place my masked subject on a new background?Onceyouhaveextractedyoursubjectandarebacktoyourhosteditor,openupthebackgroundyouwishtoplace the object on. Go back to your masked image and make sure the masked layer is selected in the layers panelandthenpresscmd/ctrl+Atoselect,andcmd/ctrl + C to copy that selection.
