THE WROCLAW OPERA

December15thand16th,2012

The history of this landmark one-act opera Cavalleria Rusticana, written for a competition sponsored by the Sonzogno Publishing House,took place in 1890, in the Rome’sTeatro Costanzi. It is said that theamphitheatre “went crazy” aftercurtains had fallen. Music, with itsexplosive expressiveness both inthe solo as well as the choir parts, enrapturedboththeaudiencesandthecritics. Pietro Mascagni, its creator,said afterwards, that this was his coronation, even before becoming aking!Astheoperaitselfwastooshortto f ill a whole evening, it has beenbroughttogetherwithPagliaccibyR.Leoncavalla. ThisDecember event attheWroclawOperawillsurely remindof its historical triumphs, in large part due to the tremendous ensemble oftop-notchparticipants.

The 8th edition of Jazztopad, a festival ofexceptionaljazzeventswillnotonlyshowcaseyoung as well as renowned composersand the biggest jazz stars, but also, in itscontinuing traditions,proudlyparticipates ininternational platforms organizing workshops with the most influential jazz musicians tocreateuniqueprojectsthatwillbeperformedexclusively during the festival. Jazztopadis indeedagreatcelebrationofmusic,withrenowned artists such as Wayne Shorter,Charles Lloyd, Kenny Wheeler or GaryPeacock having performed here. This performance has beencreated based on material gathered bymembers of the New Riga Theater ininterviews and meetings with Latvians,including photographs, letters, dating ads, and personal stories. Set in Riga, loversfromdifferentsocialbackgroundsandagegroupsmeet;fallinlove,quarrel,andpartways.At theendof theplay, glimpsesoffifty biographies would be seen, muchlearned about Latvia and the amorousyearningsofitsinhabitants;surprisinglyallthesecharactersareperformedbyacastofonlyfiveactors.

Ostrów TumskiA short walk from the Main Square, OstrówTumskiorCathedralIslandistheciy’soldestpart, its equivalent of a piece of jewelry thatadorns it.Thefirst bishopricwasbuilt on theisland in the year 1000. It was almost wipedout by the Tatars in the mid 1200s, and asthe townsprungon theoppositebankof theOdra River, Ostrów Tumski became moreexclusivelyfortheroyals.Thisisaworldofoldbeautywithsoaringcathedralspires,cobbledstreets, reached by a bridge with thousandsofpadlocksplacedbynewlywedssymbolizingloveforever.

Wroclaw’sFourReligionsDistrict,calledtheFourTemplesToleranceDistrict,wascreatedin1995attheinitiativeofCatholic,OrthodoxandProtestantclergymenandJewishcommunityactivistJerzyKichler.Fourchurchesofdifferentdenominationsare located in the area, the Orthodox Birth ofHolyMotherofGod;theRomanCatholicChurchofAnthonyofPadua;theEvangelical-AugsburgChurch of Divine Providence; and the WhiteStork Synagogue. Charity events, educationalmeetings and interfaith prayer meetings areregularlyorganizedtogether.

Panorama of the Battle of Racławice is animpressive artwork from the 19th-century, astunningexampleofthisgenreonlyfewofwhicharepreservedinEurope.Thislargepainting,114metersinlengthby15metersinheighttransportsthe spectator into the Battle of Racławice Thisfamous episode of the heroic attempt to defend Polishindependenceoccurredin1794betweenthe insurrectionist force of regulars and peasant volunteers under Kościuszko and the Russianforces.
